I was just wondering if there were any Nick Drake fans here. I think he is one of the most under appreciated artists in history. I also thing he was ahead of his time in many aspects.

He inspired musicians such as Robert Smith of The Cure, REM's Peter Buck. The 80's band, Dream Academy, even dedicated a song to him called "Life In A Northern Town", which climbed high in the charts. His breathy melodic delivery is very similar to modern day's Jack Johnson, and his open tuning guitar style can easily be compared to the Goo Goo Doll's John Rzeznik.

Nick Drake is the only musician to have all of his albums on Rolling Stone's list of "Top 500 Albums Of All Time".

In the year 2000, his song "Pink Moon" was featured on a Volkswagen commercial. Within the next couple of months after that commercial aired, more of his albums had been sold than any had in the past 30 years.

Well, there seems to be a couple of us here, but not many who know or at least have an opinion of the late great Nick Drake. That's too bad.

I started listening to Nick Drake some years ago as his reputation was growing and my curiosity was aroused. I like the mellow melancholia of his music, made poignant by the Van Gogh-like lack of widespread appreciation it received during his short life and the tragedy of his early death. I've noticed snippets of his music played on ITV's Heartbeat, the Sunday night police drama serial set in the 1960's, and the undemanding televisual equivalent of Ovaltine, set to a 60's pop soundtrack. The music editor often seems to be seeking to impress with his obscure song selections. It's a shame no one had the brainwave of playing Nicks' stuff in the background on Z Cars and boosting his profile while he was alive.

My favourite album of Nicks' is Pink Moon, his final recording in which he sings and plays unaccompanied by the elegant string arrangements that graced his earlier albums. The songs often sound bleak and perhaps reflect his depressed state at the time of writing:

Know that I love you
Know I don't care
You know that I see you
You know I'm not there

Two songs stand out for me, and against some of the others sound like the musical equivalent of the sun peeping out from behind the clouds, these being, Which Will and From The Morning. The latter sounds almost jaunty with Nicks' warm breathy voice backed by a deft and lively guitar.

I've given in to the urge and am at this moment spinning Nicks' Five Leaves Left album to remind me of how good he is..

Great post Man!
I'm glad there is someone else out there who enjoys him.

Have you checked out the album "Made To Love Magic"? If so, what do you think of Robert Kirby's additions to the songs "I Was Made To Love Magic" (which on this album is only called "Magic" for some reason) and "Time Of No Reply"? I personally love the orchestral addition to "Time Of No Reply". I prefer listening to this to the original since it's more of a true addition to the song than a remix.

If you are not familiar with this 2004 album release, you may enjoy it. It has several outtake tracks not found elsewhere. Some of the songs have very subtle differences, such as scrapped vocal tracks put to familiar final cut music. Someone did some digging to come up with this album. While it's certainly not what I would call the best Nick Drake album, it does have aspects that true Drake fans can usually find enjoyable.

Good Post. I like Nick Drake. The more I learn about him, the more I'm aware that he has a huge following of fans and has influenced many. I find his music haunting.

I love his music. Place To Be is my fav song by him.

when you think what musically he could have become if he had not died, it is such a shame.

As it is he was the 20th centuries Dowland.
