| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/4/2008 3:51:31 PM | I have been happily off the freeways for 30 years.....now I find I have to use them again....and I am SHOCKED at the way people use their vehicles! These are 'methods of transportation', not Sherman Tanks......
So I have questions..... Why, when the price of gas is SO high, do you feel the NEED to whip around us at higher than the speed limit, to beat us to a RED LIGHT? PS, we pull up right behind you..... WHY do people insist at cutting in at the LAST minute when they know the road is going to narrow? Problem reading the signs? WHY do you follow at less than the minimum car length (so many feet per so many mph), behind SUVs and other things you can't see around....how do you KNOW what is happening up ahead? Newsflash....you can't see either! I braked quickly on a 'snow' day, to watch 6 vehicles lose control behind me..... Why again, do you 'gun' your engine and burn costly fuel to gain a couple hundred yards in the process? Are you made of money? Then I want your phone number....
I am aghast at what our freeways have turned into....looks like a chariot race right out of Ben-Hur.....input?

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/4/2008 7:55:26 PM | | I have to admit I'm a speeder. But I'm not a gunner, a cutter-offer, or a tailgaiter. My biggest peeve is it that it seems like everyone in Michigan has broken blinkers. lol Man- I cannot stand sitting at a stop sign or red light waiting to turn right, and the slow ass that you've been waiting for FIVE mintues for to pass, ends up turning at your intersection. GRR!!! lol | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/4/2008 8:42:09 PM | Signals are a GOOD thing, Simmah....in relationships AND on the road! Never hurts to let another driver know what's on YOUR mind...... Course, then they can choose NOT to let you in....there's a lot of THAT too... | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 1:17:56 AM | I tend to be a bit heavy on the pedal too like Simmah, but never drive up on someones ass and tailgate 'em. I like a nice clear view at all times.
I have to admit tho that on those snow covered road days, i will and do drive like an old granny! lol I could care less if the people behind me are irratated or not. lol
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 5:12:52 AM | | I hear ya, Rip....and those blasted horns blowing away.....makes me jump everytime.....I sit in the right hand lane and PRAY on my way home.....still always get some jerk that gets on my tail and blows his horn.....hey! RIGHT HAND LANE! This means I don't WANNA join the rat race....go pick on lanes 1,2, and 3! | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 10:34:01 AM | "never hurts to let another driver know what's on your mind" Lighthouse lady are you referring to the middle finger??? LOLOL!
I am bad, very very bad, because when there is a lane up ahead that is about to be blocked because of our ever present road construction and we are all slowing down for it except the person who thinks they are going to get ahead of us and jump in...I drive between both lanes so they cant get pass me yes yes, I really do and I know that makes me loved very much...LOL, NOT!! But my way of thinking is this...if I have to sit here and wait for five minutes and you think you are going to race up that closed lane to squeeze in way up ahead...you better think again because I am in just as much of a hurry to get out of this mess as you are, no cutters allowed I learned this trick from truckers, I watched them do it several times and thought...wow, what a great idea Robin
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 12:13:55 PM | Robitty, are we related....LOL? I do the same thing! Nuts to peeps that have to race up that closed lane.....and then make the merge a total hell.....Of course, my lil' Sunfire doesn't intimidate anyone.....I don't even think they see me.... My second ex was a trucker driver, and you better BELIEVE they don't care for that four wheeler zip-around stuff! 10-4! | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 12:36:58 PM | The police are supposed to be ticketing those that don't get over out of the lane that is warned to be closing up ahead, and instead continue driving in it to the end and try to take cuts, creating a bottle neck. But Ya rite! I've yet to see anyone getting caught. Heck, I have yet to see any police anywhere in the vicinity.
I sure don't miss the freeway traffic. I currently live 8 miles from my current job and it only requires me taking 2 regular roads.. no freeways, YAY!
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 1:55:44 PM | It's interesting that this post has 8 replies and 70 views.....hope some of you 'road warriors' are viewing this thread....I can only hope that it made you think for ONE MINUTE that the way you behave could endanger other's lives as well as your own..... and for what? 5 less minutes on the road, or two hundred feet of extra real estate?
I would just like to come home SAFELY......if you are in a big flippin' hurry, LEAVE EARLIER and allow extra time.....your family is COUNTING on your safe return! So is mine!
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 4:43:08 PM | | I hate the ones that see the signs, get over in the right lane, then cut back over to rush ahead, then they're sitting there hoping you'll let them back in (not!!). Also, the one's that go flying down the shoulder in a construction zone to get ahead of everyone. | |

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 5:02:32 PM | I know the subject is "Michigan Drivers" but I can assure you this happens throughout this great country of ours. And it always, truly amazes me. This hazardous style of driving is brought upon by those who believe that their journey and task is more important than any other's. And, of course, we all know that this is certainly not fact as it is MY, ME, MY journey which is most important. LOL
I'm am always so amazed at people's inconsideration of others. Bah Humbug.
Just one man's humble opinion.
Dave
Happy and safe driving to all.

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 5:18:02 PM | OMGOSH! I have to agree 100%!!
I avoid at all cost I94, I75, 696 and 275. Good Grief! One would think it was the Indy 500 driving on these roads, and God Forbid you break down and have to pull over on the shoulder, you don't dare even think about getting out of your car to change a tire unless you want to become roadkill. Not to mention...I ALWAYS get lost because I get so preoccupied trying to avoid crazy drivers I miss my exit....LOL
The only Expressway's that I don't mind driving is I69 and 121, the traffic is reasonable, officers are very visible and it seems the northern drivers have a little more respect for everyone on the roads. I'd rather have to watch for deer popping out of nowhere then to have to play chicken with several other vehicles.

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 4/5/2008 7:00:19 PM | I agree that it's not just Michigan.....ever driven thru Chicago at rush? DON'T.
Since I am pretty much forced to use I-275, I derive daily 'enjoyment' from watching all the cars jockeying for position at the 'splits', as they REALLY want to be in THAT lane, but not just yet...... I love the peeps that steer from the right to the left and back again trying to buy an extra 20 feet. Reminds me of the Kentucky Derby. 'Andddd....THEY'RE OFF'!!!!!!
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/6/2008 5:23:49 AM | | Lately I've been noticing that sometimes you go the speed limit on the freeways and it feels like you're speeding because most others are only doing like 60, now what is up with that??? | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/6/2008 6:48:32 PM | | Wow...I thought it was just me, I'm glad you've noticed it too! I've been having to use the fast lane to pass when doing the speed limit and it's not just the old folks I'm passing...what gives? Maybe everyone has slowed down trying to save on gas? Whatever it is...it's driving me crazy, not far to go I know, but none the less...crazy! | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/6/2008 7:52:50 PM | many people that do not use the freeways alot are intimidated by the higher speeds they drive slow because they were raised on the 55mph speed limit plus some of the older cars don't handle well due to wear us truck drivers call them white knuckle drivers( they are hanging on for dear life ) | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/6/2008 8:10:27 PM | All of you are funny. What complaints, speeding, tailgating, jack rabbit starts, signaling and construction passes are these?
If any of you have been outside the country, most countries think we are baby drivers. I certainly could not drive in China, they are much crazier, they don't follow the rules most of the time. One way? Either way, it's one way. Passing, as you pass, move over too early to push the guy over. People in the road, don't hit them, sometimes.

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/10/2008 3:59:31 AM | I'm promoting the Federal passage of a reduced freeway limit that was implemented in 1979 to reduce national fuel consumption. It led to fewer and less horrific accidents, less fuel consumption, safer roads, fewer deer collisions, fewer rollovers, and higher national blood pressure. Cut and paste this link to see what I'm talking about: http://kec.kansas.gov/chart_book/Chapter10/12_SpeedvsFuelConsumption.pdf | |

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/10/2008 5:41:13 AM | Are you out of yer ever luvin mind me man? I jist knew it...you be one a them there drivers a doin' 6o in a 70 ain't ye???
Bah humbug!!! Git outta my way and stay in that slow lane
On a serious note...I had to drive down to Detroit yesterday to Childrens Hospital for my son to have some more tests, and while I encountered many of those slowbeeies, I also found many loonies in the fast lane. How do people who live near Detroit do it every day? I thought that rush hour traffic was going to cause me a heart attack, ack!!!
On the plus side though, our truck drivers are still gracious and kind, one of them blocked some of that traffic and let me in a lane, he must of known I didnt know my way around and had my blinker on and no one was going to let me in to get over to my exit...hugs to him! Another one blew a tire with the biggest boom I ever heard next to me and sent debris flying and checked to make sure I was ok...(once I shoved my hand down my throat and pushed my heart back into position I was just fine) ...sooo kudos to them and bah to our loonie toon drivers who btw...alll seemed to be about my age... Gotta just love I75....not! Does road construction ever stop?

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/10/2008 7:52:12 AM | I used to drive taxi and now I drive bus part time... And you wouldn't believe how important it is for drivers to get around me so they don't have to stop the next time I am letting someone on or off...
I have to put my signal on and just go anymore.. If you wait people will just go around you. And technically people should be waiting for the bus anyhow. When there is not another lane to pass that is NOT what the left turn lane is for.
I drive a route that needs another 5-10 minutes added to the route but they expect you to arrive on time so I end up driving 5-10 MPH over the limit. Which sometimes means I have to slam on the brakes because of the guys who forget they have signals and just slam on their brakes and go down a street...
Around here if you drive half in the lane half out they will just pass you... I have more then once just sat in the same location in that lane and blocked people from being able to pass me.. One time I did that with a trucker who figured out what I was doing. Normally people will let you back in when you get to the end when they realize what you are doing. In the one time with the truck next to me I ended up having a kid try to pass me on the side but I blocked him. He would swerve over to try and pass me and so would I.. I would have let him try to pass me if he went into the ditch.. Of course then he would have to be towed.. And being in a work zone and fines being doubled... Well he would have had a nice ticket there... That backup was like 3 miles and when the kid realized he wasnt getting anywhere he dropped back a little and got in line. Had a few drivers honk their horns at me and give me a thumbs up on that one.. lol Especially the trucker..
Figure for every car that passes you thats another 10-15 seconds you have to wait.. And in a 3-5 mile backup if you let 30 cars by you could be waiting an extra 5-10 minutes...

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/10/2008 8:59:57 AM | i work for a company that says THERE IS NEVER AN EXCUSE TO BE LATE FOR WORK. i drove one time this winter to jackson, MI, and a horrible snowstorm was coming. it takes me an hour and 15 min to get there, so i left myself 3 hours to get there thinking it could be worse. boy, was i right!!! i ended up being 13 minutes late. not only was i chastised by my office, but they broadcast to ALL who work there that i was an example of what they should not do. they announced, "if she knew a snowstorm was coming, she should have left early." hello? did i not call them and say i left three hours early??? but according to "them" THERE IS NO EXCUSE!!!!! and when i got to the appointment, not only was i late, but everyone that was attending the meeting was late, including the main person who arrived after i did. i apologized to everyone there, and they were like, "are you kidding me? you don't have to apologize."
and i have to say it was one of those times driving where your fingers were tightly clasped around the steering wheel, and waiting to end up in the ditch like countless other cars.
OKAY, I'M DONE lol | |

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/10/2008 10:02:59 AM | Note to Robitty and Hodgie- my ex was a truck driver, and I went on a couple 'road trips' with him........it is amazing how LITTLE respect '4 wheelers' have for truckers.....and I didn't realize it till I was sitting up there agape at all the idiots....
NEWSFLASH - Big rigs don't stop on a dime, and cutting in front of them and braking is not a really great idea.....actually, cutting them off at any time is not a great idea....
These guys are out on our roads 24/7 bringing us everything we use, and we don't even realize that it was those 'darn, slow truckers' who are carrying food, sundries, cars, plants, you name it! Not to mention materials so that others have jobs.....
A lot of time, the drivers are from out of town, and not familiar with the area. When they gotta got to an exit, quickly, there's not a car around that will let those SLLOOOOW truckers in front....from then on, if a truck needs to change lanes, I will let them in....what's another 30 seconds of driving time?
These guys spend days/weeks away from their families too, just to do their jobs, in all weather. Let's show some respect!

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/10/2008 5:25:56 PM | I know what you're talking about Robbity I work downtown and see some crazy things everyday! too slow, too fast, passing in and out of lanes, and sooo rude! I lived in the southwest for a while and driver's acutally wave you in etc.. big difference here in the cold north - | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/10/2008 8:17:28 PM | that guy that wants to slow the speed limit down doesn't realize that the study about lives lost was found to be wrong that is why they brought it back up plus the cost of slowing the country down would help worsen the economy trucks would only be able to run 550 mile a day instead of 660 thats alot of loads and miles lost when you think of how many trucks that is out there they would have to put another 50,000 trucks out on the road to cover the loss think thats the answer put more trucks out there??????? | |
