| Montreal Posted: 4/10/2008 3:06:22 PM | Hi - Montreal rocks!
The downtown main street is Rue Catherine, lots of cafes and outdoor places to sit and people-watch. One of my favorite is Rue Arthur. Amazing restaurants and very good prices. You can bring your own wine (no corking fee), which you can buy in any of the depanneurs near by. Makes for a very reasonable and enjoyable dinner!
Have fun! | |
|
| Montreal Posted: 4/15/2008 9:34:31 AM | Thanks for the tip, Badenerin, i wil write down Rue Arthur.
no one else has been to Montreal or is from there? any tips at all would be helpfull-nightlife for the over 40 crowd? things to see?
|
| Montreal Posted: 4/15/2008 10:10:57 AM | Having lived in Montreal, and considering it home... rue st Dennis, is the best place to have fun, its full of very good restaurants, and bars if you want a bit more english, and have money to spend, cresent st, to bishop st, is the place to go, no visit to MTL would be complete without visiting old montreal, Montreal is a wonderful city, each area has something to offer, the plateux district is my favorite, cool cafee's, book stores, interesting places to shop, and some very cool night life | |
|
| Montreal Posted: 4/15/2008 10:32:48 AM | Oh i didn't rememember to mention, its not rue artur, its prince arthur, a couple of things to keep in mind, MTL is an old city, more European than American, and like NYC, and Boston parking can be a bit nasty, the city has excelent public transportation, and sometimes a taxi is much more practical, for the 40 and over crowd, cresent st, and old Montreal, but really you can have fun anywhere, age is not as much an issue as in many other places in America | |
|
| Montreal Posted: 4/17/2008 7:22:08 PM | I will be in Montreal in November (Canada's biggest party - Grey Cup)
Will be watching this thread to make sure that I don't miss any important tips on the "must see" stuff!!
|
| Montreal Posted: 4/20/2008 1:12:51 AM | OK...the inside scoop.....from a Montrealer.....(Don't tell a soul).
St.Denis is a must, if you want to get the character of the city. On a nice day, find an outside terrace, order a cafe au lait (in a bowl) , and some breakfast. Then people watch.... (especially girl watch).
Try my favorite resto in town - Yuan. Go there for supper, it's on St. Denis on the corner of Sherbrooke St.

Isn't that an amazing place for a meal ? It's pretty cheap, too. Service is great, and so is the food. Don't miss the bubble tea, it's a must. It's freshly made.
Also, don't miss Schwartz's smoked meat. Do that, and you will never be allowed back into this province.

You might have to wait a while in line outside, but it's worth it.
There's also the Bar-B-Barn , a Montreal rib institution.

On Sunday mornings, it's time for the Tam-Tam festival on the Mountain. Each and every week a little Woodstock type counter-culture gathering takes place, and the drumbeat of dozens of Tam's will lead you right to their door.

And you just have to see Montreal from the look out, that's another must. Sunrise and sunset are the best times. It's free, too.
Old Montreal is another must, and you've got things like the IMAX theater at the Old Port.
Try a high speed run into the Lachine Rapids, on a jet boat.

See La Ronde, if you like amusement parks.
There's so much to do here, that you could spend a month and still miss out.
It might help, if we knew what your interests are.

| Montreal Posted: 4/21/2008 7:46:48 AM | Thanks, Want to travel and Montreal Guy. Montreal Guy, most of my time will be spent at the mondial de la beer, so im basically looking to find out what the highlights or can't miss seeing, things to do in Montreal are. as well as finding some nightlife where a 44 yr old guy can hove fun and not feel like im the oldest guy in the place. i plan on seeking out some of the local brew pubs as well. Seems like old town is a must, and i will make a note of Schwartz's, as both seem like can't miss things to see and do. Sounds likeCrescent St, St. Denis and St. Laurent are must do's as well. Will i be ok with out speaking French? i know a few basic words, but i hate to butcher a language i do not know. Thanks again for the tips, and if you think of anything else, feel free to respond. thanks. | |

Don't be shy.
Most people in Montreal do realize that people visit here, and have no problems with tourists who don't speak French. Just the fact that you try, will make a lot of people open up to you. It's the best way to learn.
Sounds like Crescent St, St. Denis and St. Laurent are must do's as well.
Crescent is far too "anglo" for me, and I seldom hang out there.
You can't say you've visited Montreal unless you've spent some time on those three streets.
Chex Paree is perhaps another stop to consider, if you are the type to want to see perhaps the finest example of ...ummm....ummm.... a strip club. It will make you re-think the entire concept of strip clubs.
Mark Twain once visited here, and said that you could throw a brick in any direction - and hit a church. You still can say that about Montreal, but if you miss the church with that brick it will probably hit a strip club.
As for older crowd hang outs, I'm perhaps not the best to suggest one. It would seem that many clubs will cater to a younger crowd, typically. There may be some around, but I'm not really aware of them.
There's a lot of different options in regards to micro-breweries, and those will probably be easy to find from the Festival site. I'd think they'd all be there.
Don't miss the SAQ ( alcohol store) for some really great beers, like a Belgium raspberry one. Makes you rethink the entire concept of beer, after tasting something as great as that.

| Montreal Posted: 4/23/2008 7:41:18 PM | Hi

it will be my first trip to Montreal, so any suggestions on things to do and see besides the festival, and any other tips would be appreciated. If you like museums you have to check out the Biodome. It's 5 ecosystems under one roof...it's pretty amazing. I have been to St Denis St and it is awesome as Montreal Guy & want to travel claim. I've never been to Old Montreal but will next time I visit.
|
| Montreal Posted: 5/7/2008 12:31:15 AM | I agree with Meegway, go to the Biodome! It's such an amazing place, I love going to it even though I've been several times already. It's a fascinating place!
Also some more ideas for restaurants, Chez Cora is a really nice little place that has reasonable prices and a great atmosphere, but you may have to wait a few minutes to get in. I can't remember what their hours are, they may only be open for breakfast and lunch but definitely worth a try. Another place to check out, if you like Indian food is Le Taj, the food is amazing. We try to go there every time we visit but don't always get the chance. UGH!!! Now I want to go to Montreal!!!!
Oh, and people are generally very nice when you at least make the attempt to speak French so don't be shy as Montreal_Guy said! Give it a shot!
Bon voyage! | |
|
| Montreal Posted: 5/7/2008 6:45:49 PM | Be sure to check out La Basilique de Notre Dame, as well as waltz through Old Montreal.
Went last August, loved it. Going again in July.
Restaurants I liked: * La Baton Rouge * El Jardin Nelson
I'll have to check out Montreal Guy's suggestions as well. So bringing my djembe this time and staying til Monday so I can get crazy at Tam-Tams.
Here's one thing I'd like to ask...what are some suggested places a guy could take a girl in Montreal in terms of a date? A nice place for dinner, and maybe a show or attraction.
|
| Montreal Posted: 5/10/2008 6:54:55 AM | if you are looking for party or drinks non-stop head down to the old town of Montreal!
| |
|
| Montreal Posted: 5/10/2008 7:09:51 AM |
A nice place for dinner
Already suggested - the best first date resto in Montreal
Inexpensive, quite healthy, and with excellent service.
The back tea room at Yuan, on St.Denis and Sherbrooke.

Check out that decor.
A must see...or is that must eat at....
|
| Montreal Posted: 5/12/2008 9:46:52 AM | Montreal has everything!! My personal fav the Biodome - its like a little mini zoo, only there is a rain forest and little monkeys, birds, sloths all run around free. Its amazing! | |
