| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:03:40 PM | I have been talking to this girl I met a while back. Anyways I called her today to see if she wanted to go have coffee and told me that she'd like to but she was already out with her girlfriend.
Do women usually refer to their female friends like this? Or is she dabbling in the sausage-free zone?? I feel that I'm getting shafted here.

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:08:49 PM | Im thinking that it is just a female friend. But nowadays it doesnt hurt to get further clarification. I refer my female friends as my girlfriend all the time and ill do a quick disclaimer and say "shes a girl thats a friend" | |

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:25:29 PM | Just so we're clear here, you think this girl may be gay because she choose to stay out with her girlfriend instead of dumping her because you called ???
I think this is a girl with her priorities straight. Boyfriends come and go but girlfriends are forever.
Next time, plan ahead. | |

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:26:02 PM | | If she had said "friend" you might have thought she was with another guy. To my way of thinking, this was just a way to tell you she is still interested in you and had to turn you down because she was occupied with something/someone that isn't a threat to you. | |

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:27:12 PM | I'm not sure if I should explain this . . . but . . .
. . . okay, WTF. She referred to her friend as her "girlfriend" just so you wouldn't start a thread saying, "This girl is out with her friend??" (thereby sparking six pages of banter regarding the possible gender of the person with whom she was out.)
Or, in plain speak: She was making it clear to you that she wasn't out with a *guy* and that means she might actually be interested in *you.* Go figure.
|
| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:31:49 PM | | I always refer to my female friends as "girlfriends". That phrase has been around for ages. | |
|
| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:46:32 PM | Yup. I figure the ladies above are right when they said she showed she was interested in you because she said "girlfriend" so you'd know it wasn't a guy. Now, however, she'll come back from her night out with the girls, check the forums and see this:
I feel that I'm getting shafted here.

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 5:54:18 PM | I guess I'm trying to see what is the down side to this question.
OK, so if she is bi (must be or why'd she be chatting you up), you know she's got an open mind about sexuality and you can probably infer a few things about her such as comfortable talking about it. And it's not like you asked or she offerred a twofer...otherwise known as Every Males Fantasy.
Is this too spooky to handle? If so, then move on.

I always refer to my female friends as "girlfriends". That phrase has been around for ages. So, is that women-exclusive? Can I refer to my female friends as girlfriends? And, what about my male friends? Are they my boyfriends?

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 6:05:04 PM | Or is she dabbling in the sausage-free zone?? Yeah like your not all kinds of happy thinking this means something else and you can get with both of them.
oh God man- its her friend, her girlfriend. We have been using this term since the beginning of time. I think like anything in this world it now has multiple meanings.
nothing is sacred anymore.

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 6:25:24 PM | Hey... this explains so much. Just the other day I phoned the woman I am seeing and she quickly whispered "hey, can't talk now, getting busy with my boyfriend" and hung up. I totally misinterpreted that remark. I bet it was all completely innocent. | |

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 6:26:11 PM | Wow, I didn't think this thread was going to go like it did.
I'll give you all a little more background. I have been trying to set things up with her in the past but the opportunity hasn't really presented itself. I don't know about other guys on here, but I pretty much have no idea WTF I'm doing when it comes to dating.. All I wanted was advice or opinions as to weather she was talking about another female friend or maybe she has an actual girlfriend. Maybe I'm just too paranoid, but I'd rather ask here then try and act like a moron around her trying to figure out if she's still into me.
Thanks to all that posted honest replies. I appreciate it.
And I did not meet her here on PoF. Also don't delete the thread, I'm not looking for pity!!!!

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 6:27:35 PM | OP,
Yes, women do commonly refer to each other as "girlfriends," but I wouldn't suggest you try doing the same (either referring to your female friends as "girlfriends" or your male friends as "boyfriends") unless you're trying to get invited more often by the girls to go shopping, and get dis-invited by the guys to watch the game. It probably wouldn't help you out much among your military pals either.
I wouldn't worry too much about your friend, though. Like someone else said, either she meant "girlfriend" in a fraternal sense and you're still in good shape; or she meant it in a romantic sense, but she's still giving you rhythm, so perhaps everyone can have a great time before it's all over. Either way, you're better off than you could otherwise be.
At the end of the analysis, however, is either she will ultimately kick it with you, or she won't. Wait things out; try a few more times to plan a get-together; and, if things still persist to not work out, leave the lady alone to her own devices and pursue other interests. She may even come back your way, if she gets a chance to miss you.
Good luck!
OH!! I almost forgot ... PEANUTBUTTERJELLY drop me a line!!!

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 6:39:09 PM | Yes! If I say I'm having lunch or a drink with a girlfriend, it usually means a friend who is a girl. I use it as an implication that they don't assume my "friend" is a guy.
This rule goes for the same if I refer to meeting a "buddy". That usually means a guy.
Hope that helps. | |

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 6:41:07 PM | Just pretend your the meat and they're the bread ... and hav'em make a travellingsoldier samich outta yah.
Just hope one of'em doesn't walk out of the bathroom wearing a strap-on ... or you prolly will be getting the shaft.
* ouchie-wowchie *

PS. (When she said she is already out with her Girlfriend ... it means it's just her friend ... not her lesbian lover.)

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 6:45:58 PM | Ok, thanks everyone. I wasn't trying to be a jerk here, just wanted some answers . As I said, I am not very good in the dating scene and thought when she said girlfriend she may have been trying to send me a signal to go away. Evidently that's not the case. Thanks again. | |

go on try acting like a moron it’s not that easy

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 7:49:23 PM | | Not only do I call my female friends girlfriends, but the woman I work with I refer to as my partner. Now that causes some double takes for which I am forced to define the term nearly everytime. | |

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 8:10:19 PM | How old are you?? I'm thinking by age nine most boys know girls refer to their platonic (meaning non-sexual) gal-pals as "girlfriend" Likewise women refer to their adult gal-pals as "girlfriend"!!! How could you not know that?????

| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 8:15:34 PM | | Women goto the bathroom in packs...they kiss at the bar and treat each other like they are girl friends...even when their not. I would have to say, that her having a girlfriend isn't a big deal... | |
|
| This girl has a girlfriend?? Posted: 4/9/2008 8:17:47 PM | I agree with the majority. I don't say "girlfriend" but I am the odd man out, most of my friends refer to female friends with that word.
I think this is a girl with her priorities straight. Boyfriends come and go but girlfriends are forever. Next time, plan ahead. Exactly.
