Clothes maketh the (wo)man. We judge people on what they wear and how they wear it, hair styles, tatts, piercings, etc. What about the car (or bike)? Is it just a means of getting from A to B or is it an important extension of someone's personality? If your beloved was about to splurge on a vehicle what would you like them to get? Would it matter? So what's hot and what's not? What would you buy as your private vehicle if you had a $10k-$20k budget? If you were are car what would you be and who would you avoid?

Yesterday I saw a gorgeous purple Ford XR8 sedan.......if I had the readies, it would be sitting in my driveway! It'd tear my heart out to own a Ford - but damn, it was a beautiful car. Lucky I own an oil well....

i'd spend 7000 on a toyota echo which is exactly what i did... i spent 14 on the bike, so that was my bit of craziness..

i dunno about modern life...all this stuff about clothes and possessions making ze people. Of course, its true. If you dont look cool in modern life, you havent got a leg to stand on...

i spose i just do it every so often like i did it with the bike.. just to get a feeling of what its like to be one of the cool brigade..

as for the car, i tend to look for reliability and longevity...you will never see me spending 50 grand on a jerk off 4 wheel drive to impress the neighbours. You may as well spend 10 grand on an old landcruiser and spend the rest of full body massages...if you get my drift..

^^which i suppose is what I'm curious about. Are you very particular about your clothes you wear? Is it common for someone to be particular about one and not the other? Do opposites often attract in this regard? Or do snappy dressers drive slick mobiles in search of the other slick and snappy? And since you mentioned the house...

Last year I actually got about that much money from my nanna's will and I bought a Ford Focus. Because it was value for money/cute/nippy/economical/had good features and came from the dealer round the corner where I know everyone and they gave me a good run out deal.

Does this mean I'm ....
value for money? (probably)
cute? (maybe when I was three)
nippy? (pretty fast on my feet at avoiding housework)
economical? (certainly)
good features? (hmm...some)

I feel better driving a reliable car because its awful driving something that you cant rely on to start when you're on your way somewhere important. Or wondering if you're going to make it.

Being a little interested in renewable energy and stuff, I'm liking the idea of driving an electric car with instant torque, is silent, costs bugger all to run and may or may not look the business for my mid life crisis.

But until I find the extra money, knowhow and resources to build such a machine, I'll put up with my turbo forester. My licence has already been a temporary casualty of this car that looks like something your grandmother might drive, but my own mother wont drive, because it kind of 'gets away on her'..lol. I wont mention the Series 1 XJ6 Jag in the back shed that I had retrofitted with an EFI and turbo, or the 4x4 Mazda one tonner I also need to find rego and insurance money for. What does that say about me? I should have gotten into bikes more maybe, or lived on the bus route.

good point but the guys (in particular) who sit at the lights with their elbow out the window of their flash car want everyone else to be looking at it (and them) admiringly

Cars are in your blood or they're not.....rev heads run in my family. Which does not explain why I have only owned a Datsun 120Y, Nissan Patrol SWB andf a Toyota Seca! But the point is, I OWNED them.

If I had that purple XR8....I wouldn't just sit in it - I'd live in it. The kids could have the house. It'd have a better sound system anyway!

I mean, sometimes I see classic cars cruising along the M1 on a Saturday and think wow, that's not a car it's a sculpture. Check out one of the car sites for a 1959 Chevrolet El Camino or a 1960 Cadillac Deville. Some have real personalities; the arrogance of a Rolls Royce, the cute ditziness of a Fiat Bambino or a beetle, and where does a classic Citroen fit in. Do any modern cars have personality?

I used to buy " cheap reliable cars" and then just run them into the ground... just drive them till they gave in, then literally park them, walk away and arrange a wreckers tow. I guess I did that for about 10 years, and saw about 5 die.

I change my car pretty often now. In the last year, I think I've had at least 6... I loved the sporty little LS coupe I had for Christmas, it was a fun little car. That was probably my favourite, and I did have to steel myself a little when I got an offer on it too good to refuse. I don't have a lot of attachment to cars though, I guess I look at them a little like clothes... they can change with me, and I guess I have cars to meet the demands of my life, just the same as I dress for work, sport, or whatever.

I've had my bike for years though, and doubt I will ever part with it. Actually, I'm sure I won't. I sold my sidecar about 6 months ago, and I still have wistful thoughts about that decision...lol. Freedom is a funny thing, but the bike reminds me I have it, when life gets hectic or I'm feeling the demands of being a mum, a friend, employee or whatever. Sometimes it's just good to remind myself I can "ride it out".

So what's all that say???... I used to hold onto things and wreck them, now I let go easily, and have come to value freedom and resilience?

Yeah, that'll do.

A car to me is just something to run around in - as long as its reliable and doesnt give me grief then Im happy.

In saying that I only ever seem to buy 4 door sedans (goodness knows why cause there is only me) and they tend to have something sportyish about them - current Bluebird has the spoiler thingy on the boot.

However what truely does make my car mine is the whopper sticker across the back window that states "kiwi chicks rule"

Yeah, I hear you Bewitched I was just a bit flumoxed by your purple XR8 response. I agree that they have the body shape and grunt factor happening but I've found I've distanced myself from the old days of mates going on in this stupid Fords vs Holdens bit, so I guess both brands are right off my list (i.e. I don't want to be identified in either camp). I have a Ford Capri which is a lot of fun (when it's going) but it doesn't seem to attract the blokey bloke's attention (probably too girly for them) which is just fine by me.

...and BionicAngel, I'm no Steve Austin but I'm trying to picture you doing your Jamie Sommers bit, with sidecar!

"Kiwi chicks rule", OMG that wins hands down.

But seriously, what first impression would you find hard to avoid projecting onto someone climbing out of an old Rolls, a newish beemer convertible, a 60s yank tank (Pontiac, Cadilac, etc), a Harley, a jap import Nissan Skyline, etc.?

A car is just a car, as long as its safe, its all good. I have a white Commodore Acclaim S/wagon. Does that mean I'm boring but dependable? ( don't answer that lol)
If I was to buy a new car it would probably be a purple Toyota corrolla, or a Rav4

I like my commodore ute...it's got a few years on it, but it just keeps starting and driving. Maybe I'll even wash it one day.

I've never been into new bikes....I like something I can push to the limit and if I drop it then I'll fix it and go again, not cry over the scratch in the paintwork.

Having said that, I do have a Hayabusa that is for racing only and it has all the fruit....Stroker crank, Crower conrods, Nitrous, big valve heads, cams etc etc...The frame is cut at the headstock to allow the front to be lowered further.....etc etc.
It's in bits now, but when it was running it was the quickest and fastest normally aspirated Hayabusa in the country and also the quickest and fastest Nitrous Hayabusa in the country.....But it's all in bits, and some of the stuff has been sold as I'm making new stuff for it, like the swingarm etc......
It's all about horsepower, nothing about looks......Show means nothing without serious GO!!!!

Pedro, I have only ever driven my bro and Dad's 'hot' cars.....but I used to pretend my 120Y was really cool. It kinda was because it was so wanky (number plate: IUD204 - the contraceptive car). The 'chook' as I used to call it, got me all round the country a couple of times before Dad cooked it - and I could do some of the mechanics - gotta love that. She ran on the smell of an oily rag too...my first car.

A billion lite years ago in another galaxy and when I lived a another life, I was the proud ower of 1978 Lotus Europa - got it in the divorce settlement.

I loved that car !! it was hot...and totally and completely impractical but I just loved getting around in it, fast as,...of course it was red and often I was approached by car enthusiasts for them to have a look at it...it was fab.....loved it...I then went to the US for 5 years for work and put it into storage and a good friend of mine looked after it, tuning and taking it out for a spin every so often.

Approx 3 weeks after my return from the States, I had a complete bimbo blonde "Oh my God, what country am I in ?" moment while driving down the road and yep you guessed it, I drove down the wrong side of the street and totalled it....me included, luckily the truck driver being up high in his cabin, sustained minor injuries..me in hospital for 5 weeks !!! Insurance company Shannons has blacklisted me !!!

The payout sponsored a really nice holiday to Europe and that was the end of that....

Fast forward to poor Uni student status of today and I now drive a 4 door 1988 Ford Laser (everyone drives Fords in Geelong to help out the local Ford factory) hatch and its held together by stragetically placed 2007 Geelong Premiers stickers, a Geelong Scarf, a Geelong jersey, alot of rust and.........prayers, but hey it does the trick..gets me from Geelong to Melbourne and back again, even if it is in dire need of a muffler....boy can you here me coming....literally !!!...scheduled replacement muffler next week.......

I do miss having a hot car....and my dream car is a Aston Martin Vanquish....mmm along with that dream is Daniel Craig as my husband and world peace...guess ones attainable....still with the price of petrol Im tipping we're all going Vespas soon.

Bewitched....ah the old Datsun 120y...I think we've all had one at some stage in our lives..how good were those cars ??....RELIABLE AS !!!

Dare anyone say a word against the legendary 120y? I had a 180b, a total rust-bucket but great mechanicals and the easiest vehicle I've ever worked on, changed the diff in an hour with a coupple of wheel ramps and a handful of spanners! Timing chain, give me an hour or two. Yes, that's quite a number plate. My students think my current plate ILY (I love you) is quite cute!
