I am stealing this idea from California...they have a thread going about it that I really enjoyed reading. Even though it was about cars I still couldn't "road trip" so I thought I would start one here.

What is the first car you ever owned? Remember anything specific about it? Did you name it?

My first car was a 1964 Jet Star 88. I bought it in 1977 for 200 dollars. It was as big as a river barge, covered with rust, ugly as can be but...IT WAS A CAR!!!
The gas mileage was awful, gas was 62 cents a gallon then. Never did name her...

My first car was a 1984 Ford Tempo. It was gray. I don't even remember how much I paid for it. No, didn't name it.

But a friend of mine named my red sunfire convertible Penelope for some strange reason lol I miss her.. My friend, not the car. Oh well, I miss that car, too, actually.

First car was a Dodge Colt bought in 1973 for $2500. My mechanic called it the Colt Camper because it broke down a lot and I would just sleep in it. It was a LEMON!! Bought it brand new!! I called it AMY because those were the first letters on my license tag. It was yellow and got me where I needed to go.....well.....sometimes, if the temperature was right and it didn't overheat! Funny how when your young these inconveniences don't bother you. It was always an adventure!!!

$1200, a 79 Buick Regal, black with a white landaue roof, with a sunroof, and a Blaupunk stereo. I loved that car, used to clean it constantly, even used a q-tip on the dashboard.

oh memories, cruising 231 in Babylon, NY with my hip hop disco blasting, my big 80's hair, my girlfriends bopping to the beat, we thought we were so cool, even when we were putting scraping for change for gas ..

I bought my first car when I was 15 (1972) it was a '68 Buick Electra 225 4 door. big azz car. Paid $400 and it was in show room condition. Put in a eight track tape player, big stereo speakers in the trunk with 100' of wire on each one. We would party at the park took the speakers out went 100' in different directions and would crank the tunes.

My first car was a 1959 VW Bug, purchased in 1962. Gas was about 30 cents a gallon. On the weekends, 5 of us would squeeze into it, cruise around all weekend and it would cost us about 25 cents each. The car was so economical that it didn't have a gas gauge. Instead it had a reserve one gallon tank that was operated with a lever on the firewall above the gas pedal. When the engine would start to sputter because it was running out of gas, you kicked the lever and that put another gallon in the tank which was more than enough to get to the next gas station, BUT you had to remember to flip the lever back when you filled the tank or the next time you needed the reserve - it was empty.

1968 Barracuda. It was 1981, I lived in Hawaii and I had a choice between that and a 1970 Grand Torino. Both vehicles were sale for $400. I wish I still had that car

I was 15 when I was still growing up in Miami, Florida from the age of 9.
Prior to that I was living in Mobile, Alabama....a real Southern gal....

Anyway...I received my first "technical" car from my grandfather which was his used Toyota Corolla. It was white on the bottom and black on the top. I hated looking like a "black and white" cookie in the parking lot at High School so I had the bottom part painted a metallic silver. I thought I was cook back then. LOL. Everyone was so happy that I got a car at 15 that I was driving around everyone and, I DIDN'T have to pay for insurance or my gas back then. (My mom gave me a gas card..lucky me...wish she would do that for me now...lol)

BUT...My real FIRST car was the one I got for my 21st birthday. I got a Firebird Special edition. It was a metallic aquamarine color. It was gorgeous. I'll see if I can dig out a picture of me in it Naughtical when I had the "basic curly perm" look too. Ha Ha.
I basically got it to impress this guy that I had liked in High School, but he was just a good buddy because he always had a girlfriend, but he drove a white Firebird and took me and other people out to lunch from high school during lunch time to The Hot Dog Gallery. What fond memories...what fun times. Thanks for making me reflect on them. Gosh LG.....lol..."Life's Good"....~~Beth~~

My first car was a 1980 Honda Civic hatchback. I lived in the Keys at the time & bought it wth money I made stone crab fishing. It didn't have much room in it, but it got decent mileage. The radio in it was the best I had in terns of reception; the first night I used it, I was picking up radio stations in LA, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, & Denver. The problem was that I was also picking up every station in Cuba as well.

I had a motorcycle first, but my first car was a 1966 Corvair Monza in 1972, it was my Dad's car first. I got into an accident with it one day, I was rear ended and then pushed into the car ahead of me, so it messed up the rear AND the front. When I got it home, my Dad came out, walked around the car a couple times while I told my story, figured I was dead meat, and he said, "Well, looks like you just got your first car", and signed it over to me, big deal back then!!! Wish I had that car back, they were kinda funky and fun, unfortunatley it didn't last long with me, it wasn't fast enough!!!

I was a late bloomer. I did not learn to drive until age 24 and purchased my first car at age 25. It was a 1981 mercury lynx and I thought it was all that. I flirted my way into getting a racing stripe painted on the side. It was brown and shiny and I felt like queen of the road. I never named my car but took care of it like it was a precious jewel. I am surprised I did not wash and wax the finish off that car.

My stepfather bought it and I had to pay him payments. It was an ugly Chevy Impala (don't remember what year). Memories: Came home from a date one night and the trunk was blinking caution yellow. My little sister had taken it for a joy ride with her girl friends and they kidnapped a blinking sawhorse. Oh yeah she got her first speeding ticket that night too!

Thanks for your first car stories...didn't they make you smile, the memories? I love reading them. No one can forget their first car, just like you can never forget the first time you...uhmmm, never mind. *blushing here*

Sometimes I feel like I missed out because I never had a VW bug. Wanna_dance, your story was interesting...never knew about the reserve tank.

My second car was so much cooler than my first...it was a '69 AMC Javelin. Had a real cool paint job. I really wish I hadn't wrecked that car 2 months after I got it.

Nautical, I'm glad you enjoyed the reserve tank story. That car was "basic transportation" at its' most basic. A heater, air-conditioning and automatic transmission were not even options that could be ordered. As I remember, it had a whopping 36 horsepower and a favorite trick that would be played on VW owners was about 4 guys would pick it up and carefully place it between 2 trees that were about two inches farther apart than the car was long. Ever try to get out of a parallel parking space two inches longer than your car?

Another motorcycle first guy.....didn't even own a car until the ripe age of 24. But I made up for it after college. My first car was a 1967 fastback Mustang w/ a 390 & 4-speed. "Arrest me" red w/ a tan interior........man, that was a cool ride!

Hehehe....we did the tree trick to our high school shop teacher. He was NOT amused.
