| Airfare woes Posted: 4/10/2008 10:14:28 PM | England or bust!
Little did I know that it might just bust me before I get there. Last week I checked ticket prices for my adventure to the wonderful land of the British and discovered that they were less expensive then I would of thought. About $400 cheaper then I thought.
To my dismay, I check again and the cheapest flight I saw (booking 2 months in advance, economy seats, one way) and what do I see? Tickets going from affordable to "No way will I shell out 1000 clams for a plane ride!"
Even with the inflated prices, I still need to go. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it. I refuse to let my dream of traveling Europe go the way of the do-do bird.
So, other then aircraft, I thought maybe a boat might be what I'm looking for. So I check for all ports that have a departure from Florida and bound for England. Couldn't find one. Apparently all the major ports for shipping (duh) are in NYC and Baltimore.
POF community, you all have so far inspired me to travel (live my dream!!!!!), and gave me hope that some day, I'll find a love for me. So now, I humbly ask the community if anyone knows a good source for cheaper airfare, or if anyone knows an alternate method of travel that I am unaware of. In return I can um... uh... give you a digital high five and many words of appreciation!
Yours truly, Brian | |

| Airfare woes Posted: 4/11/2008 8:34:25 PM | | There will be cheaper tickets as time goes by. Maybe have to wait until fall. Another option is the relocation of cruise ships. Happens several times a year and the rates are usually reasonable as they are 1 way only. | |
|
| Airfare woes Posted: 4/12/2008 5:20:21 AM | | Cruise ships may be the way to go, but I doubt you'll find anything less than $1,000. Perhaps wait until late September, or look out for last minute deals on flights. | |

| Airfare woes Posted: 4/12/2008 3:44:20 PM | | well...don't bust..Europe is worth any money to get there...but check out www.flightcentre.com, I found tickets to England for the summer for 499 plus tax. (from Toronto, mind you) I've been flying to overseas for a long time, and if i get away with less that a 1000, I feel lucky. But it's worth it - just stay longer! :) | |

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/4/2008 7:19:45 AM | | Do like I did, I joined citibank thru american airlines and they gave me $25000 bonus miles just for joining. I had my friend do it as well on another acount. Now we have two free tickets in the USA for doing Nothing. They waive the $85 fee for the first year and then I complained about it for the 2nd year and they removed it. Contential AIr did the same thing. I spent some $ on the card and I just flew to Costa Rica for $22 round trip. I rebooked it for next year for the same price. Have to play there game. I always pay it off at the end of the Month so no interest and you get a free Flight | |

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/4/2008 5:07:54 PM | This is the beginning of the high priced season. All of Europe begins to get expensive and crowded about this time until the end of August.
If you can, wait until about October. I have been twice in the Fall. Less tourists and cheaper prices. And the weather is still good in November or October . You will need a coat but no snow.
And try Orbitz and the other full sevice on line booking sites. I wnet to Las Vegas via one and had no problems and it was a lot cheaper than using a travel agent.
|
| Airfare woes Posted: 5/7/2008 7:13:53 PM | Brian - you'll find that airfare woes are only about to begin. Especially if crude hits $200 a barrell. Jet fuel will go thru the roof, plus the surcharges that the airlines are implementing. It won't stop me from travelling.
Surf the airline websites around midnight and the middle of the week. There are so many websites (Orbitz; Travelocity; Kayak; Airfarewatchdog; Gorillaair; etc)
|
| Airfare woes Posted: 5/8/2008 12:30:11 PM | | Try this website it has discounted airline tickets and the agent helps you by booking directly with the airline and cruise vendors if you can't get a cheap flight or cruise (www.cmleisuretravel.com ). Phone # 561-502-6360. Good Luck. | |

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/12/2008 2:13:14 AM | well when it comes to England, you're better off flying. Ive once thought it would be cheaper to go by boat (and more fun) but it ended up costing just as much, if not MORE cause of all the money i spent on the boat! XD
The trouble with planning a trip to Europe right now is that, like you, everyone else in the US is thinking the exact same thing. So honestly the only GOOD place ive seen decent rates for England is on Orbitz, and avoid Delta, trust me... You could find yourself a nonstop flight to and from Heathrow, London using a Brit airline. I managed to snag a round trip to London 2 months in advance for about 1,100 USD.
Either way youre going to pay a pretty penny for LONDON, maybe you can find cheaper flights to France or Germany? Then maybe spend one or two days there and then ferry over to the UK from France. Jus a suggestion. Everything in London is expensive... it's horrible. Imagine US prices but in UK currency, its hurts the wallet =P

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/12/2008 10:05:13 AM | Hi Brian!
Can you sail? Perhaps you could join as crew on a yacht crossing the atlantic to europe. Sometimes they even pay you for the job, but watch up for skippers who are looking for "paying crew", that might get you in trouble. In europe is cheap to fly. Check Ryan Air. I flew from Gothenburg , Sweden =>Barcelona =>Rome=>Barcelona=>Gothenburg for only 170 USD. Here are some links to sailors forums

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/12/2008 4:33:02 PM | there are tricks on ways to travel as cheaply as possible, and as many people have said, try to avoid the High Season - which tens to be May to September.
Also if you can book your flights to be on a weekday you'll find you'll save anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. Flying out on a weekend is very popular and the airlines know this - so they jack up their prices.
Try cheap airlines as well. Zoom is pretty cheap.
Once in Europe travelling by rail will be quite cheap, and very efficient. If you fly into Schipol (Amsterdam Airport) you'll find that it is an airport, train station and bus station. Transport is very convenient.
But yeah, if you can get a ticket under $1K count yourself lucky...what with fuel surcharges and other fun stuff.

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/15/2008 5:24:33 PM | Have you tried cheaptickets.com? Also try googling rates from .co.uk sites and Icelandic Air. Having moved here from the west, $1000 doesn't sound too bad. Compared to what you'll spend while you're there, it's nothing.
In an era when Bush has driven the value of the dollar into the dirt (on purpose - google "weak dollar bush administration"), your European trip will be the most expensive in history. Combined with high gas prices (I won't even get into the reasons for that), your choices are:
1-pay through the nose; 2-go later when you're older and won't enjoy it as much (weak dollar and high oil prices won't be cured overnight, you'll have to wait a few years, and by then inflation will make your trip now look cheap) 3-wait for the afterlife and enjoy your friends travel pictures.

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/16/2008 7:22:41 AM | I got my ticket a month in advance. I leave on the 28th of May from Orlando and land in Dublin for a layover then into London.
My cost? $400. Not too shabby I think :)

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/16/2008 5:12:09 PM | someonetookmySN,
I notice you mentioned ONE WAY for your ticket. These days one way tickets are virtually the price of a return ticket. Have you looked here? http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/us/specialoffers/usspecialoffers.jsp
They look like fair prices. Remember there are departure taxes and the stupid sept 11 scare mongering tax of $250 on top.
Airlines like Etihad and Emirates may be able to give you a reasonable rate, too.

| Airfare woes Posted: 5/16/2008 5:16:18 PM | Air India has flights for under $500 including serious taxes in june JFK > HTR

Start doing some serious searching and you are bound to find a good suitable deal.
I've flown with Air Iandia a few times and although it's not anywhere in the leauge of Cathay Pacific it was at least as good as British Airways (which is no mean feat hehe). It's only a few hour flight to get to where you need to be. As long as there is a seat, you'll be fine.
