COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- A couple fighting about which gang their 4-year-old toddler should join caused a public disturbance that resulted in the father's arrest, Commerce City police said Thursday.

On Saturday, Joseph Manzanares stormed into the Hollywood Video store where his girlfriend worked, threatened to kill her and knocked over several video displays and even a computer, Commerce City police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said.

After he ran out of the store, police were called and the 19-year-old was arrested at his home.

His girlfriend told police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to. The teen mother, who is black, is a member of the Crips. Manzanares is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman said.

"They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised. Basically, she said they cannot agree on which gang the baby would 'claim,'" Sandoval said.

Manzanares was charged with disorderly conduct, harassment, and domestic violence. He was transported to the Adams County Detention Facility.

On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a year of probation. The misdemeanor harassment charge was dropped.

Uh...isn't this the part where child welfare agencies step in and make sure the kid doesn't wind up in either gang ?

Well, you know, he will be starting kindergarten soon.

I'm sure you can imagine just how difficult things would be if he showed up for the first day wearing the wrong "colors" and the ensuing kindergarten gun battle made the national news.

Why be raised by a small-time gang when you can be raised by the government, the largest group of criminal thugs around? Hey, it worked wonders for Charlie Manson.

^^^^^^^^Sounds like a mighty good idea to me "loonytunz".

Call me not really up to all the rules of gangs, but I question how these two even got together in the first place, if they come from two very different gangs would their union not have been prevented by other members of each perspective gang?

Yet that really is not the issue of this story, what is I would say is truly the welfare of this young child being raised by two parents who I am thinking will have him in dangerous situations as his future unfolds.

Hard for me to place myself in a world such as this, where a parent's concern is which gang they should have their child initiated into. Has our world come to this ? sigh.

You know as ridiculous or not so ridiculous as this may sound, it really wouldn't surprise me if a story as insane as this was actually made for public viewing.

I just came from the other thread about the eight teens filming a brutal attack on another teen and placing it on YouTube for the glory of being viewed, so it appears that anything anymore seems to draw the public attention, no matter how truly sick it is in content.

I shudder to think about the future of this innocent toddler, who is in the hands of these parents who find gang choosing of top priority in his life.

The hell with the gang problem...let's find the kids mom. This boy was 14 0r 15 when[time frames are just math] he was doing his part to foster the little darling.Let the police do the right thing and bring in the statuatory charges as well.Of course she may have been in the same age group and if that was the case then Lily Tomlin must say....."Nevermind!"

people join gangs because they are disenfranchised from the rest of society. some of the gangs are all strut, the others more dangerous. on tv now, most people glamorize the mafia. they forget to include murder incorporated, the jewish (my religion) contribution of the same era. my ex, now a high finance guru, was in an irish gang in new haven. they fought the black gang and later on , in college, they all just shook their heads.

if you don't want gangs, try focusing on ways to make different cultures feel a "part of". from their perspective, it's no different than two people from two different religions marrying and fighting later on. what is really sad, is that most gangs just shoot each other within the same ethnic group--each one wanting to be better than the other group. why is that? because deep down they feel totally powerless in the rest of the world. slowly their rage will erupt and cross boundaries. you can put them in prison and then they will get out and be even worse. or, you can get to the root of the disease.

i recently met one young ex gang member of a local group, whose cousin, the leader of his "gang" gladly let him out to go to college and get a good job and a " house one day" . others just don't come across the opportunity or have no clue that they have a chance of making it in the "mainstream". powerless, they grow rage and it erupts--eventually onto the society that disengaged them in the first place. that is how the more dangerous gangs market their affiliations--preyinng on their own weak, with promises of a "place".

Can you say "Westside Story"?

When you're a Jet,
You're a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette
To your last dyin' day.

When you're a Jet,
If the spit hits the fan,
You got brothers around,
You're a family man!

You're never alone,
You're never disconnected!
You're home with your own:
When company's expected,
You're well protected!

Then you are set
With a capital J,
Which you'll never forget
Till they cart you away.
When you're a Jet,
You stay a Jet!

Somehow, I don't think it's ever going to be a problem with this kid:

Kid: I want to join the Crips
Crips leader: Get out of here, you scummy Westsider!

Kid: I want to join the Ballers
Westside Ballers leader: Get out of here, you scummy Crip!

Looks like this kid's only future is in college.

Well the courts have agreed on a stipulation between both parties. Every Wednesdays and on every other weekend he'll be a Westside Baller. Since the mother will have physical custody, during that time with his mother the child will be Crip.

That's such a load of nonsense.

Kids join gangs because it's 'cool' and because they get to wield a certain amount of power. This bunk about how 'they never had a chance' is exactly that ; it's bunk. It's such overcomplication to ascribe such detailed 'root causes' to explain why kids join gangs. If enough of their friends are in a gang, they'll follow suit and the whole idea of having plenty of free, easy money and authority over those who once had authority over them sure is attractive to the average young male.

The truth is that in most cases the way to keep kids out of gangs is to raise them properly. This is different than claiming that some kids don't feel that they 'belong' (in a neighbourhood full of people just like themselves ?) because in the latter case the presumption is that it's inevitable a young man will join a gang. They have the same amount of control in their lives and the same opportunities as the rest of the general population (which is to say that it may not be much but it's still there for the taking)

Enough of this "I'm a victim so it's not my fault" crap.

They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised.

Differences about the upbringing of children are a common flashpoint in relationships, especially with people from different backgrounds. This is an issue that should have been discussed before they started their family. At the risk of sounding like a liberal, I sometimes think that they should cover this sort of thing in school. It causes a lot more headaches than a lot of the more traditional topics.

black ... Crips ... Hispanic ...Westside Ballers

It's a sad commentary on our divided society when organizations become segregated along racial lines. More inclusive membership policies might have prevented this sort of dispute. Other progressive measures, perhaps allowing trial memberships or dual membership for youth members, might also help.

Regardless of the origins of the disagreement, the guy had no business bothering his girlfriend at work and airing their dirty laundry in public. Very gauche.

Some kids join gangs because there is no where else to go in their lives..Not everybody is born with a silver spoon in their mouths..I would hate to be that kid, of course the courts will side with mommy if there is a divorce and she is a somewhat good mother..Maybe when the kid is old enough he will take care of himself..I grew up with a couple guys who's whole family were in the KKK And they both ranaway never to return..One actually choose to be locked up rather then to live in that enviorment it really depends on ones outlook on life..I was involved in a couple street gangs when I was a kid I got out but not before I almost got killed even then when you live on the streets your a kid home is hell...It's not something you can really do anything about because your a kid and kids have no choice other then detention of sorts if they don't want to live at home..When I was a kid I thought the streets were the best place for me as I had alittle control in my life..If I had to do it all over again I would have stayed in Boys Town, out of all the places I was sent to that was the best I think..Even though years later I would hear of molestations had occurred there and having had been a victim/survivor of rape and molestion I have a hard time believing it happened there..Alot of people get sick of people playing the victim card but what if your whole life is that enviorment? What if from the time you are born you are bought up physically, mentally, and sexually, abused? We know what happens to children who go through this shit a small amount make something of themselves others become lifelong abusers themselves usually of drugs and alcohol killing themselves but some become John Wayne Gacy, some walk into their school, place of work, or place of their last resentment and open fire, some kill their families...Personally I think and it's only my opinion not all people respond to discpline some people who have been abused in one way or another are victims and need to be loved so they can survive what happened to them instead of shoving it under the rug and hoping it will go away, because it usually doesn't.

I do not, nor have I ever lived in any area where gangs are seen or predominant, so it really is hard for me to relate to this type of environment. Yet as Byrd said above, if this is what they grow up seeing/knowing and is essentially their environment, would it not be presumed that it is natural for their lives to take them to the gang life? Especially if we consider the fact, that both parents in this scenario are full gang members? It would appear to me that this child's future is already predestined for him sadly.

Maybe when the kid is old enough he will take care of himself..

Or perhaps, he will be one of the few that leaves this lifestyle, and chooses a better path. We can only hope and pray that his life will not be one of abuse, killings, drugs, or sadly death.

The parents are to be congradulated for thinking of their childs future. A lot of parents don't bother, figuring the future will look after itself, or the kid will!
Excellent parenting...but....kind of in the wrong direction. I guess with people like that, it isn't if they get into a good school...it is if they get into a high profile gang. Daddy wants junior to join his alma mater, mama wants the prestige associated with a big name gang. Hmmm..what to do, what to do....
Bust the both of them for being gang members and remove the kid from their clutches. Don't they have anti-gang laws there? Or are they a wee bit behind the times?
