I'm guessing this is a CRT projection. In that case, several models made by magnavox and RCA are prone to failure on the blue CRT tube, which produces a problem very similar to yours (Except the maganvox model fails entirely, and both other tubes blow with it)
You'll need to call someone in to service it, most stores like Best Buy won't service it in-store if it's over 25" However, given the noise and average repair costs, you might consider replacement. CRT projections aren't particularly sharp TVs to begin with, and DLPs are coming down quite a bit.
If it's a DLP or LCD projection, some bulb failures can do this, check for scorch marks on the bulb.

| tv turning off Posted: 5/29/2008 1:55:05 AM | Sounds like the power supply is bad. I had the same thing happen in an old picture tube tv. Might be cheaper to buy a new tv than to fix. It is just up to you which route you want to go. You can call around to tv repair shops & get price quotes. One of the big expenses will come from the repairman/woman coming to your house. | |

| tv turning off Posted: 5/29/2008 4:28:28 AM | Hi,
The hissssssss you hear is likely an electrolytic capacitor that's dried up and gone high resistance. What happens then, is whatever they're bypassing/smoothing/storing gets subjected to excess noise/ripple because it cant' do its job any longer. As a result they can no longer do their job any longer either, and you get a chain reaction of failing components and circuits.
Protection usually kicks in and shuts it down before very long, but every time you turn it on again, you increase the odds of furthering the chain reaction. Looks like your warranty saved you. Repairs like this aren't cheap.
