| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/15/2008 8:33:14 PM | Gas and food have shot up so significantly that whole countries are rioting because people cannot afford it in some places due to very limited incomes. Governments are attempting to cope, but seem powerless while, despite the so-called crisis, the companies supplying these are having record profits! There does not seem to be any end in sight, either, because anything governments do are temporary and only eat up national revenues, not solve the problem.
Why and how are things getting out of hand, who is behind it and how can it be stopped?

| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/15/2008 9:24:30 PM | Thanks to the democrats taking control of Congress since 2006, energy prices have skyrocketed due to their FAILED energy policies:
1. Ban lightbulbs???? but support CFC's that contain Mercury......who would of thunk it? 2. No new drilling in USA for the last 30 years, maybe if we drilled here, we would not be DEPENDENT on Foreign Oil. 3. No new Refineries in last 30 years. Not only do we not drill for our own oil, but we have to Export 13% of it to get enough gasoline.....who would have thunk it? 4. Subsidize Ethanol using Corn??? Who thunk this up. Use Corn for Fuel and what do you eat?? Tree bark? 5 . The list is endless, vote the incumbants out, they are worthless and are destroying the world as we know it.

Posted: 4/15/2008 9:29:36 PM | Rising gas prices and an exploding world population are some factors working to drive up the cost of food and creating shortages in some areas. In the United States and other Western nations, more and more poor families are feeling the pinch. In recent days, presidential candidates have paid increasing attention to the cost of food, often citing it on the stump. The issue is also fueling a rising debate over how much the rising prices can be blamed on ethanol production. The basic argument is that because ethanol comes from corn, the push to replace some traditional fuels with ethanol has created a new demand for corn that has thrown off world food prices " Check this out and it will tell you how rising food costs are causing not just an American but a world explosion: Riots, instability spread as food prices skyrocket - www.CNN.com......

You should eat the cats. Pretty foolish to feed pets when you can't get enough for yourself. I assure you, they would eat you if they got hungry enough.

Posted: 4/16/2008 5:38:30 AM | mfrotyl, so you are saying that it is the policy of Congress, especially Democrats that caused the present crisis? That is, ceasing exploration and drilling at new fields in America and thus dependant on imports of oil and the switch of some corn crop to ethanol?
Could you elaborate? My understanding is that the falling dollar is also to blame as investors are sheltering money in oil and food futures markets, so if that were a big contributing cause, there are other reasons.
And by the way, I am not asking what individuals can do about themselves.......it's more about how does this stabilize and end on a bigger level.
At the individual level, though, I am indeed stocking up on canned food. I've cleaned out a closet and every week find sales and add a dozen items. It seems prudent at this point because the way things are headed it will be the National Guard who decides who eats or doesnt eat, at gunpoint.

My friend ~ everything ~! across the board it going up ~
I'm luck in that I can ~ pass on cost ~ but only to stay in line with the market
The AC business ~ is the birth place of the dumbass it seems. `
and many as cluelees as to what the market truly is ~ and this clouds and confuses thing some.
Another pressure that we , business owner have to deal with is thieft.
That right thieft, ~ people working for a company and working on the side~
which in and of itself is not bad ~~ but when they , use a company truck , company fuel, and company parts and material ~~ and pocket all cash ~~~ It's imposssible to compete with them . ~ so the the market is driven down by this behavior.
Since these hillbilllies ~ didn't buy ~ the truck. fuel and material ~ much less insurance and licenseing fees and security deposted, ladders. pumps ` tools , etc
they as truly cluless in knowing what something is worth ~ making them a canidate for the firing squad ~ or hanging ~ and a big problem for an independant contractor.

Bread will be $5 a loaf soon. Not to alarm anyone but if you can spare money, spend it now while there are still supplies on the grocery shelves. The value of the US dollar is deflating quicker than you can say Aunt Jemima. Utilities are next.. can you imagine a summer in Dixie without AC?

| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/16/2008 12:11:10 PM | We don't need to eat cats, kids, or adults. We all do need to take more actions to be more self sufficient in our lives though. During WWII people across the country grew "Victory Gardens". You can grow a garden in even a very small amount of space. I live on a small farm now but to be honest the most productive garden I ever had was in a 6' x 6' space in the city. I simply took better care of it and made every inch count. Canning food isn't real hard either. The "Ball Blue Book" is available at WalMart along with the canning supplies you will need.
Consider planting fruit trees around your house instead of ornamentals. It actually says to do this in the bible, repeatedly. "Plant only the food tree, cut the other for fuel."
If you can find a place to keep rabbits you can raise a tremendous amount of meat cheaply on scrap vegetables, lawn clippings and weeds. A doe has a 28 day gestation cycle. You can reasonably expect her to have 3 or 4 litters a year. 8-10 bunnies per litter. If you live in the country chickens or ducks can supply you with eggs at little or no cost. Cattle, goats and sheep cost more to get into but they can live entirely off of grass. Pasture, woods, road ditch, even your backyard. I've grazed all of those. It's not real hard to milk a cow or a goat.
Consider a few hogs if you have lots of scraps available, access to waste dairy or bakery products or woods full of nut or fruit trees. Can't afford to feed them corn anymore!
I heat my house and shop with wood. There is no way with these fuel prices that I could afford to buy propane. Modern chainsaws are inexpensive and durable. Chains are relatively easy to keep sharp with an inexpensive set of files. Chainsaw doesn't burn much gas either. I doubt I used even five gallons this winter.
Good luck, -Chris | |

| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/16/2008 1:59:11 PM | So far, besides the silly posts here, all I am reading is what individuals might do individually to shield themselves from the carnage .... but how telling that is.
Since when did everyone become such isolated fish in a barrel? Where is the collective action?
Who and what and why is really driving these sharp increases all over the world, that even governments seem powerless to stop?
Odd. We get hit with all these sharp price increases and don't really know why or who, anymore, just some kind of domino effect and it all is falling onto the consumer.
We are headed for stagflation........a recession coupled with inflation.......a very nasty combination. And no one has a clue as to why?
Corporations always got away with impunity because they were faceless, and now these big mega multinationals are much larger and still faces .............who are they? Where are their faces? Someone is driving these costs up, it starts somewhere....but who?

| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/16/2008 2:06:07 PM | THIS IS ENGLAND .
The price of food has shot up because - Tes*o only made three billion pounds profit in the first three months of the year, the greedy fat cats need more profit.
The price of fuel is going up two pence a litre daily (in my local garage), because they can do it and we all pay it, cos we need to get to work to pay our taxes, so we can shop and pay more taxes or save it and pay more taxes.
No problems the British are so rich we can pay and pay and the rest of the world gets rich, in the mean time people cant afford to buy a house. The poorest paid in England just had another stealth tax laid on them, but the rich remain poorly taxed, go figure that one!
Go Figure....
RANT OVER sorry breathing deeply and calmly now
How do we solve it - let women take over the governments of the world, we are far better with money than men. Ooopse that is going to start something now lmfaopmslrolf
Oh yes forgot they bought out the Pope to cover the major financial crash all over the world, maybe we wont notice while looking at the pope.

| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/16/2008 2:16:36 PM | Well, here's another silly post.
It is through our individual actions that we impact the collective good.
Why are food prices high?
1. We are at war. A world war mind you. There is fighting on every continent except N. America and Europe and countries in N. American and Europe are involved in the fighting. War typically drives the price of everything up.
2. Fuel prices are high.
3. Feed grains are diverted to fuel production. Soy diesel and ethanol.
4. Grains are being hoarded worldwide. Fears of future disasters or wars spreading has caused nations who can afford to to stock pile grains - no matter the price.
What can you do about it? Read my last post. Take care of yourself, your family, friends, neighbors. When we all do that as individuals it eventually does have a collective impact.
Some things I didn't mention previously that we can all do:
1. Reduce our fuel consumption. Drive less. Don't heat the house so warm. Open the windows through most of the summer. Dry your laundry on the line.
2. Buy locally grown foods as much as possible. Food is trucked all over the country that could be grown in our own regions. If food was consumed where it was grown it would make for a significant reduction in national fuel consumption.
3. Perhaps it's time to consider adding solar/wind power to your home/business.
Again, it is through out individual actions that we have a COLLECTIVE impact.

| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/16/2008 3:38:01 PM | Anokagrassland, in this case, it's not going to be 6 billion people each fending for themselves because as they get more successful at it, the powers that be will only charge more and more and more.
It takes COLLECTIVE ACTION.
Sure, I can stock up on canned goods I find on sale........and I do, I've converted a closet to storing canned goods .... and I can drive a little less, go to a gas station that charges a few pennies less, etc.
It won't change anything.......just fish in a barrell.
PEOPLE ARE MAKING BIG, BIG MONEY OFF ALL THIS....A FEW ARE WHILE THE MASSES SUFFER ALL OVER THE WORLD.......
I just want to know: who are they?

| Why Has the Price of Food Shot Up and What Does It Portend? Posted: 4/16/2008 3:56:18 PM | "Somethin' is happenin' here, but you don't know what it is, Do you? ... Mr Jones"
My suspicion, which is entirely unfounded on any direct evidence, but supported by plenty of circumstantial evidence, is that the word has gone out. Perhaps even a projected date has been announced.
The word of the impending attack on Iran, by Israel, or the United States, whichever one does the dastardly deed, both will be entirely complicit.
It is my belief that the reason for these huge spikes in energy and commodities is largely due to folks armed with wads of cash and insider knowledge ... making a run on the collective economy, transferring their paper wealth into the hard currency of negotiable assets.
Personally I'm furious about it.
I am looking out for false flags, psychological OPS, disinformation, and deliberate provocations.
The story line will be that we had no choice *but* to attack Iran, after implicating Iran's Republican Guard in some sufficiently outrageous frame up job. And in this one I think we might very well need to strongly doubt the very things that we think we might be seeing. That appearances could very well be deceiving.
Beyond the circumstantial indicators, I have come to believe this due my considering what I think 'they' believe. They being the loose amalgam of folks that are fervently desirous of an attack on Iran.
It is my belief that they believe that their only possibility to attack Iran must occur before George Bush finishes his term, because after that, all bets are off, no matter who is elected; and other than that they don't really give a rat's ass about Iranian civilians being harmed, nor any of the rest of us for that matter.
Does anyone know if there is a way to check on the present capacity of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and whether Bush might be filling it at breakneck speed?
I, of course, will be quite content and happy, to be proven wrong.
In the meantime, I think that Anokagrassland is giving some very sage advice; advice that we might all be wise to heed, to whatever degree we might be able.
