I've been considering swapping from spec's to contacts, but heard some horror stories of folk getting nasty eye infections etc. Is it just scaremongering or are people who wear contacts more prone to eye infections?
Has anyone paid a fortune for contacts, regretted it then gone back to spec's?

I sometimes wear a contact lense, probably not as often as I should.
I have daily disposables so no faffing with cleaning them and the resulting higher risk of infections. All I have to do is make sure I have clean hands when it put it in or take it out. Given that I only have effective sight in one eye, I cannot afford any problems so the daily disposable were the only option I had (optician wouldn't even consider me for anything else). Cost wise, they aren't too bad either but then, I only pay half!

I tryed them and went back to specs, they made my eyes sting and water, found them difficult to put in, and they fell out too, just found them uncomfortable.

Ditto what sister-ray said ....

And no messing about with solutions and stuff, I also tried the daily ones but found they tend to come out often

I've been wearing monthly day and night lenses for about six or seven years, before that I wore daily disposables. I've never had a problem with them, you put them in, leave them for thirty days and then change them, it's like having perfect vision. Choose your optician wisely, to start with they'll put them in for a day then check them, then a week then check them then check you for a couple of months, then a check up every six months just to be sure. The optician I use ( a high street brand) does this included in the price of the lenses (£25/month).

Some people get on ok with lenses some don't, there's only one way to find out.

ive had coloured contacts before, those that last a month and was fine with them.. both my brother and mother have the prescription daily use ones and they both dont have any troubles with them..
if you follow the intrustions properly and keep the lenses and your hands clean lots of people use them with no trouble
and the coloured ones look fab and can be a little freaky....

I didn't even know these exsisted! Sounds far easier than putting in and taking out every day...think I'll ask my optician about these.

I wear those too, I don't think many opticians do them though, and the ones that don't will tell you that they're really bad for you, well they don't want you to go to the opposition now do they!

When I wore normal monthly disposables my eyes would get really sore after about 8 hours, most of the time I can't even feel that these are in. Couldn't recommend them enough to be honest, I'd hate to go back to either normal contacts or glasses. My eyesight it pretty bad and being able to see as soon as I wake up is fantastic!

Best thing invented since sliced bread - so to speak.

Been wearing them almost 24/7 for years and wouldn't be without mine. I've tried every kind known to man as they constantly improve them. I too tried the ones that you leave in all the time, however mine were to be changed once a week.

I did manage to get an infection, but don't think that was due necessarily to the lenses, so they told me to wear them as "day lenses" which I now do. This means that I wear the same contact lenses all the time during the day but take them out at night, however because of this I only need to replace mine once every 2 weeks.

Must point out though they aren't suitable for everyone, as they do require some amount of "messing" around with your eyes to get them in and out, so anyone who doesn't like their eyes being "touched" may have difficulty. I must say I don't have this problem and can take mine in and out without the aid of a mirror :)

So my advice is to give them a try, but if the ones you try aren't suitable see what other types are available.

I've been wearing contacts now for approx 14 years!!!
some years ago I used to wear the monthly disposable coloured ones "Aqua"
Loved them and the comments I received.
but for the last 4 years have not been allowed and had to go with 2wkly ones ,ordinary ,clear
but thats an age thing as your eyes get older ,they dry out and the coloured lenses are thicker so Do not let in as much Oxygen to the eyes
But,wont go back to specs for all the tea in China.

Believe you can have a free trial at some places,so have a go ,not losing anything
Good Luck!!

I wear monthly disposables and have very little problems, never had an infection but then I follow the instructions to the letter (damn ocd)

They are great for riding my motorbike and other activities where my glasses would be difficult to wear or fall off.

Give them a go and try a few different types to find the ones best for you.

dependent on your prescription and age etc and if yor eye condition has stabilised the laser corrected operations appear to be popular and looking at the cost of glasses /contacts/solutions/disposables they seem to now also be a cost effective alternative.- i have heard that some of the earlier operations (ten years ago) often made night driving?being dazzled more severe but I have also heard that this is no longer the case.
the thought of poking myself in the eye every morning and evening for contacts though does put me off the idea.

I hate wearing glasses, I need them all the time and they drive me mad!

BUT....... I don't know what it is, some form of squeamishness or whatever, I just don't like the idea of having to wear contact lenses.

I've never tried them and am probably being silly, but I'm pretty sure I never will.

Keep thinking about laser treatment but the same thing goes...... I'm just a wimp!! lol

Did any of you contact lens wearers feel the same and, if so, how did you overcome it?

I've used contact lenses for years, and never had an eye infection. Just be sure to wash (and dry) your hands thoroughly before you handle them.

I used to be a bit squeamish about the idea of putting my fingers in my eyes, but the fact that I needed to carry glasses around with me all the time spurred me into having a go. The optician will show you how.

Give it a go.

I know loads of people that wear contacts as opposed to glasses and haven't had problems with them. Myself I've got very sensitive eyes so they're not for me, but from what I've heard as soon as you get used to them I've heard they're great.

I've just had lazer treatment done, REALLY worthwhile!
Have you considered this at all?

i've worn daily disposables for about 6 years. Never had a problem, although I do start to notice them ('increased lens awareness' I think is the proper term) after about 12 hours.

Mine are actually rated for 2 days wear apparently, but according to my optician that's normal "in case you accidentally fall asleep in them, and doesn't mean you're actually supposed to do so". I've fallen asleep in mine a few times (thank you Jack Daniels!), and they're always fine the next morning. Although once, I totally forgot I was wearing them the next morning, and tried to put another pair in on top of the first.

That was confusing.

Hiya
I had contacts from the age of 28 up till I was 50 I had no problems , I even wore them scuba-diving... however i would say that on long distance flights they dry out very quickly and can become painful, so I reverted to glasses when travelling. I decided to get my eyes lasered at the grand old age of 50 and can honestly say it was the best money I've ever spent

If you can afford it go for the laser treatment if not soft contacts fitted by a professional optician are the best alternative.

Ouch, steve...that sounds painful. I'm guessing she must have had hard contacts? I've had quite a few split on me (they're quite fragile), and usually they just tear, which makes them uncomfortable for a few seconds until your eyelids force them out (the tear gives your eyelids something to latch onto, and allows them to reject the lens pretty much immediately). Mine have no hard edges, so this doesn't do any damage.

Does that work for Astigmatism? ( i think that's what it's called....one eye is rugby ball shaped instead of spherical)

Is laser surgery available on the NHS? I'm on a low income so couldn't afford to go private.

I'm due to go for my annual eye test soon so I'm just trying to suss out lenses ,so thanks to all those who have shared their experiences, I've only been wearing my specs for 6 years but I still hate having to wear them...they get in the way off hugs... and I'm always aware of the frames.....

Thanks for all your comments

I wear daily dispoables....more out of vanity really
however I do find that after a day in the office I really need to take them out and put my specs on as my eyes feel very dry
if i know i am going out at night I will wear my specs during the day to rest them before popping my lenses in
hope this helps

Nasty eye infections and whatever are supposed to be exreamly rare. My opticion (who is old with gray hair) said that in his whole profesion he has never met anyone who had got a really bad eye infection from wearing contacts.

If you're not using disposable ones just make sure you always clean them properly and pour boiling water over the case to steralise it once or twice a week.

If been wearing non disposable contacts for around two years now and I haven't had any problems.
