| Perceptions; Looking tired verus looking like being on drugs? Posted: 4/18/2008 9:45:54 AM | Wasn't sure where to put this......
Just wondering if anyone has ever had anyone comment/imply to them or similar about doing drugs (dope,speed,lsd/etc/whatever), even though you've/they've never done them, simply because you (know you) may look tired or sleep deprived? i.e you're tired, look tired, but someone else thinks you're off your head.
Personally I have never taken drugs in my life (ok, prescription medication aside). I use to do night shift work years ago, and having done this kind of work for several years, well even now I sometimes still have trouble getting a decent nights sleep, but even when I do I can still wake up looking >>insert sarcasm<< fantastic . I have actually had people say/comment etc thinking that I do drugs.
I really don't care if others think I do, since I know I don't, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or similar. And if so what kind of mis/treatment was dealt your way.
And on the flip side: have you ever mistakenly thought someone to be on drugs, only to later find out that they don't (i.e. sleep deprived/other etc). And/or visa versa. Cheers

| Perceptions; Looking tired verus looking like being on drugs? Posted: 4/18/2008 10:30:12 AM | In the same vain I get sick of people thinking I’m a stoner because I have long hair and tend to be a bit… scruffy, at times.
No I don’t know where you can score stop asking!
I work grave shift and tend to be a bit out of it during normal daytime hours it if have to go out and do something when I’d usually be sleeping, when I’m exhausted I tend to get a bit, gitty too. I'd guess more then one person has thought I was on something or a little drunk, nope stone sober... just in Zombie mode

| Perceptions; Looking tired verus looking like being on drugs? Posted: 4/18/2008 10:49:55 AM | Hmmm... good post.
Personally, I have been accused of being on drugs when I wasn't and I can see very well why people would think this about you.
When I was younger and dumber, I did a lot of bad things with my body. I think the only drugs I didn't touch were heroin and mushrooms. Other then those, I was addicted to speed for 2 years and did coke for a year as well as ecstasy, and various other forms of exotic drugs. I'm very happy I quit and have been strait (altho I did start smoking pot because it helped with my depression and its easier to get, and cheaper, then anti-depressants) for about 4 years. Just to avoid any future disagreements, I only smoke when I don't have to work the next day and I have time to sober up. I NEVER smoke or drink on the job.
Not once did anyone ever inquire as to whether I was currently high or not during those times. Maybe it was because the area's I was in, nobody cared or they already knew and didn't bother asking the obvious. Fast-forward to today. I had a late night job for awhile so my sleeping patterns got a bit haywire. Guess what... people started thinking I'm on drugs when I wasn't. People accused me of being really high because I naturally have alot of energy during odd-ball hours or they just say I'm "weird." They also saw that I was up all night on the weekends and had a good amount of extra cash. I had a good paying late-night job... ignorance is bliss huh?
I can understand why people would think that. I get groggy mid-day, my eyelids get heavy and puffy and/or bloodshot during their lunch times. Was I high? Nope! Oh well, what can you do. Perceptions are what they are. Love, hate it, people will always think what they want to think.

The bouncer at one place didn't want to let me in because I, in his eyes, looked 'too' drunk to be allowed in. Funny thing was, I was completely sober, I just hadn't had much sleep.
Once I almost got refused a beer in a pizza joint by the waitress. She just kept looking in my eyes. I hadn't had a drink for probably 6 months prior and this was just one beer with a slice of pizza for lunch with a buddy! Odd.
But I am somewhat deaf so my voice does come off as a little that way, you know, like a deaf person's but not nearly to that extreme. So I do know I sound a little on the slow side, but I had never been denied alcohol because of it.

| Perceptions; Looking tired verus looking like being on drugs? Posted: 4/19/2008 11:43:29 AM | I've encountered this a lot actually.
I'm anemic so I'm ALWAYS tired. I function and I'm pretty much used to it, but it's really not much fun.
I'm impatient with and offended by stupidity and assumptions, so I make no effort to conceal my disgust at people who'll assume the worst because I'm tired (tired-looking).
I use to do night shift work years ago, and having done this kind of work for several years, well even now I sometimes still have trouble getting a decent nights sleep
Both my mum and an ex-fiance worked nights. He dealt with it ok mostly, though he did look tired and haggard sometimes. My mom still has weird sleep patterns because of working those hours and it was 5 or 6 years ago now.
She LOVED that job, which is the only reason she kept at it, but she's sorta still paying for it years later.
I don't make assumptions... ok well, I don't make stupid ones anyway

| Perceptions; Looking tired verus looking like being on drugs? Posted: 4/20/2008 11:43:47 PM | | I get this a lot. I've been harassed by both people trying to buy and sell weed, and it can be pretty irritating. It's often one of the first things people I meet at school or work ask me about even though I've never used any illegal substances. At this point I just shrug it off. | |

| Perceptions; Looking tired verus looking like being on drugs? Posted: 4/21/2008 2:36:04 AM | Bad enough friends etc think you're off your head, the worst/hardest part is having your parents not believe you when you say you don't. Which mine constantly questioned even up until a few years ago . Don't blame them though really, when you've been surrounded by others (other family members) who have/do. Makes ya not wanna disappoint when people constantly think you are......*no I'm not tired, I really am off my head* *stumbles and falls*
People really need to open their eyes sometimes and realise there's people from all walks of life. But I'm guessing that ain't going to happen anytime soon. Ah you get use to it after awhile .

| Perceptions; Looking tired verus looking like being on drugs? Posted: 4/21/2008 4:16:05 AM | I went out Friday night to a friend's birthday party at a local bar. I only had two beer before I left, but because I was so tired I had a friend of mine ask if I was stoned.
I can't say that I have never done drugs, and I wasn't irritated at his question. But I haven't done drugs in the years that I have known this guy. I guess my mellow personality makes people wonder sometimes...lol.

So, this evening around 2:00 a.m. police show up on my doorstep. My parents live in Texas, and are working in China, so we don't talk much. I was busy during most of their calls recently, so they sent the police over because they were worried, I guess...
Anyway, they came in and I reassured them that everything was fine. Then they started questioning me on whether or not I was stoned. "It's ok if you are, I don't care." The other says something along the lines of "yeah, hell, even I smoke."
Couldn't possibly have been the fact that it was 2:00 freaking a.m. in the morning. Nope.
