| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 4/19/2008 4:50:54 AM | No..... not a play on words relating to other topics!!!
I'm just curious about what criteria people use when selecting a new dentist? I've not yet found a dentist where I've moved, and it looks like finding an NHS dentist has 2 hopes: Bob hope and no-bloody-hope!
Do you go by word of mouth (no pun intended), or do you rely on pot luck and gut feeling?

But found one that gave me an injection in my arm and knocked me out so I relaxed and she could do what she needed to do...After time I came to trust her so much I now allow her to inject me in my gum and stay awake for anything that needs doing...
Deb, your a star.. | |

Ensure the dentists mask is just that and not a hannibal lecter affair, ensure that the pliers used arent rusty and there is no cotton hanging off the doornobs...Other than that dont part with your cash before they rip your gnashers out!!

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/16/2008 2:49:28 PM | | You have to question anyone who chooses to become a dentist, they clearly have sadistic tendacies | |

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/16/2008 3:02:55 PM | Its very hard to get into a Dentists now.
I have been with mine for 24 years and left once for a short while, seriously regretted it and went back again. He is patient and caring and so is his hygienist too. It almost a pleasure to go !

Its a good question. Having had a variety of Dentists over the years i'd say;
1) Always inspect the floor of the dental surgery - i was with one Dentist for nearly 2 years and in the lying-down position i'd noticed a screwed-up, blood drenched, large ball of tissue's under a shelf . 6 months later it was still there.....12 months....and 18 months later, it was still there. Just as well, i moved area. His name, strange enough was 'Savage'.
and....
2) Always smell the Dentists gloves as they approach your mouth. Dentists 'are' supposed to wash their gloves between 'mouths' and/or use an antiseptic gel - With blood infections around its a 'get-out-of-chair' moment, if their gloves smell.

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/16/2008 4:53:36 PM | I dont rate them very high. At the moment I dont have adentist. Why? Well there was a tooth that needed to be taken out and after four visits he still hadn't. Bu the treatment i got in those final four visit came to around £500. Orthodontists are on my bad list too. When I had my fixed braces taken off after two years the glue was still on a lot of them and over the years they have deteriorated to te extent where I dare not smile. I am now currently unemployed and have no money for private and NHS wont cover it and am having trouble getting another dentist.Great!, Britain. | |

Wash? You're kidding, arent you? Tell me you're kidding. I thought they would change them. Ugghhhh. No I still think you're kidding.
Will ask my dentist this next time. Or carefully watch what goes on. He's great, he's 5 minutes walk away and my teeth are great. As are my kids. But I didnt actuallly choose him, is just because I was lucky enough to get on their list when I moved here - is a bonus he's great.

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/16/2008 10:38:03 PM | | Their personality and manner is just as important as their skills. You need someone who puts the patient at ease. A surgery where they play relaxing music helps too. Yes, my last dentist was like that but he retired. | |

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/17/2008 12:30:38 AM | Because I've moved so many times I've had to change dentists & doctors constantly. I'm lazy & just go to whichever one is nearest to my house. Guess I've been pretty lucky & have just walked in, told them I've moved again & they've taken me on straight away. Never had a bad experience with dentists & I religiously go every 4/5 months. | |

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/17/2008 2:09:48 AM | I had pure pot luck with mine... only NHS dentist I could find. There is a list on the NHS direct website of NHS dentists with their books still open. If you are stuck going with private then word of mouth is definately best idea. If you have to fork out shed loads then make sure you get a decent dentist.
Mine is really nice... I actually quite fancy him to be honest but not sure of the ethical implication of dating your dentist!! Plus its difficult to chat them up with theirs hands in your mouth..

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/17/2008 3:03:38 AM | Mine too was pot luck, I had a leaflet come through the letterbox one day advertising a new dentists opening up, and it was within a 10 min walk from home, also the names looked vaguely English.........and they were offering NHS treatment so I took a chance and rang, got signed up and not looked back.

Obviously we need to avoid the tooth-hurty appointment gag here!

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/17/2008 4:59:50 PM | I found out something recently that really made me think about dentists.
my only dentist up till now (30+ years) has now retired so I've been looking around for a new one.
criteria. don't after the first visit tell me I need x-rays and 10 fillings. I asked my old dentist about this and he said something quite revealing.
up till about 12 years ago, dentists were taught.
watch decay, and only when absolutely necessary drill and fill. the reasoning being that tooth enamel is strong and once you start drilling it out etc, whatever you replace it with won't be as good.
for whatever reason there was a shift in dental practice and they are now taught drill and fill as much as possible a) it's a money spinner b) any decay, no matter how small should get drilled.
so I am shopping around for an old school dentist and I actually ask what school of thought they belong to when I'm looking to sign up to them.

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/17/2008 7:27:51 PM | I am only asking this cuz I don't have to look at anyone when I say it. hehe
Can anyone tell me the procedure of getting dentures? How many different kinds are there? Can you get bespoke? How long will I have to wait behind my curtains before I can collect my falsers? Are they usually a near match to how my teeth were arranged? Is it dentists who make the dentures? (sorry if this is a dumb question).
I agree it may not be a very graceful question.

I really have no clue, but I think its a dentist that will measure up n fit em, but they are made elsewhere - they will certainly fit in your mouth - but if you tootie pegs were knackered anyway do you want them to be like your old ones?
I am now going to watch this thread avidly for a knowledgable lady to reply, 'cos there probably isn't an old saying about ladies with dentures but there really should be, all I can think is the possibilities are endless!
I am now sending meself to bed!

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/18/2008 2:43:12 AM | My teeth were okay - its just the glue from the orthodontist that buggered them up. Their alignment is fine. There were metal rings placed around my molars while I wore a fixed brace and these are no next to nothing. Glue/cement was also left on other teeth and they are on their way out too.
Thanks for your posting, mofwtmy.
Dentists, eh! Not worth the fillings in my teeth! hahaha!

| How would you rate a dentist! Posted: 5/20/2008 10:53:23 AM | I would go on word of mouth. Last year the NHS practice I was with went private and I was luckily enough to find another NHS dentist not too far away. However this practice did not come through word of mouth, it was a case of needs must, in the last 7 months I have lost 2 fillings this dentist has put in, one at the start of last week, and another within 24 hours of her doing the repair work last week!! It wasnt even a tempory filling. She also seems to have a very large number of free appointments which to me is disconcerting in an NHS practice. Last week I got to choose which time I wanted to go on the day of my choosing, and having arranged to go back this week to get the second issue sorted I had a call today wanting to rearrange this weeks appointment as she is free for an hour before hand and therefore doesnt want to wait around to see me! The alternative was any time I want to go the next day since she has loads of free slots that day too!!!
Hope you find one near you, otherwise I think you can have my place with my current dentist lol.
