| | Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Page 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | Over the years my musical preferances have changed as I have changed..., When I was younger 'IT' was all about the lyrics . And so...., like a gazzillion others I loved Dylans lyrics...., still do.
These days It can be just about a primal beat or catchy tune ..., without any meaningful lyrics to speak of...., or all of the above.
I understand that this particular question may have been posed before...., I could'nt find it, if it has. I myself still love a good lyric and how it may create me to think differently. I have too many to mention right now though. So, I ask you to share examples of your favorite words, or tunes, or rhythems within a single song..., ?

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 4/21/2008 6:52:27 PM | Great thread Sandy
Well obviously the tune and the rhythm appeal, but at the end of the day, like you, for me its the lyrics...they just grab you
The lyics of Dylan..well he is the ultimate a poet, his lyrics get me every time
What of Pink Floyds lyrics, all of them mind you...
"Two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground and how we found the same old fears Wish you were here "
how awesome are those lines ?
or a oldie by Joy Division - showing age here.
"When routine bites hard, and ambitions are low And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow And we're changing our ways, taking different roads Then love, love will tear us apart again" ....how true are they ?
These two lines by Powderfinger - "These Days"...all of our lives, at one point ?
"This life well it's slipping right through my hands These days turned out nothing like i had planned"
The lyrics by Damien Rice - "Cannonball" ...the Irish Dylan
"there’s still a little bit of your taste in my mouth there’s still a little bit of you laced with my doubt it’s still a little hard to say what's going on there’s still a little bit of your ghost your witness there’s still a little bit of your face I haven't kissed you step a little closer each day that i can’t say what's going on"
All great songs, great lyrics and often reflect whats going on in my life....mmmm I wonder if thats why songs speak to us and mean so much to us....they reach out to us at a partciular point in our lives ?
For all the bopping, head banging and simplicity of Status Quo, I guess even the lyrics of "Roll over lay down and let me in" meant something to all of us once !!!

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 4/21/2008 6:53:17 PM | One song that I have always enjoyed...from my younger days until now is Tusk by Fleetwood Mac.
I liked the beat and the words and have always thought it was one of their classic tunes.
I have to admit it is very different to a lot of music I like now but it always reminds me of my youth and the big part music played in it.

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 4/21/2008 11:10:34 PM | I have lip synched so many 'killer' song lyrics over the years and (in the words of Kevin Rudd)...., 'You know what ?' ...,the words that are stuck in my head space right at the 'mo' are the words...,
"The pump dont work cause the vandal took the handle, you dont need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows"
....., used to know all the words to Mr Tamborine man also. I always 'got them' !

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 4/28/2008 3:17:20 PM | Metallica have always been a favourite for me and if there is one verse in music that rocks me to my core it is this one, taken from the song "Low Man's Lyric"
And I cry, to the alley way Confess all to the rain But I lie, lie straight to the mirror The one I've broken, to match my face
You would have to know the whole song I suppose, but that verse is just perfect for me.

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 4/28/2008 5:38:36 PM | I'll be the first to do it the other way 'round:
Killer music - totally designed for horizontal activities (to my mind anyway, lol), but the lyrics, whilst also excellent, are almost counterintuitive - full of sadness and woe:
Still Got The Blues For You - Gary Moore
I defy anyone to say they can't get it happening with that playing in the background, after a test drive of the situation, of course!

edit:
ack! ...hope nobody thinks I was volunteering anything beyond the song title...

I'm a huge fan of his music as well, he's one of my favourite blues guitarists.
Cold and wet here last night and today too, another co-incidence! We went from the low to mid twenties weather to 9 degrees - in one day - ugh.

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 4/28/2008 10:18:09 PM | | It's all about the sound. Let's face it, you wouldn't be listening to it enough to pick up the poetic meaning if you didn't like what it sounded like. The Waifs have my loyalty at the moment. The sisters have been singing together since they were born and are so exact with their harmonies it's ridiculous. The lyrical content is superb but takes a backseat to the overall sound and production. I saw them at the Metro in Sydney a year ago this month. Anyone there? | |

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 6/8/2009 1:57:22 AM | I like various musical styles but my favourite band is u2, although their last CD has me lost in bewilderment. Anyway, verses like the one from their son "Miracle drug" are impressive.
'Freedom has a scent Like the top of a new born baby's head
The songs are in your eyes I see them when you smile I've had enough of romantic love I'd give it up, yeah, I'd give it up For a miracle, a miracle drug, a miracle drug'

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 6/8/2009 2:54:02 AM | more often the beat of a song gets you in first... for you to be able to figure out the lyrics... it may take a few listens to undertand ...
if the beat/rhythm is not to your style are you going to listen to every song you hear to get what the lyrics mean?... unless you know the singer and are prepared to hear their latest verse /tune,perhaps....
I heard an old moody blues song the other day... within the space of two words.. Tuesday Afternoon.... the whole feel and beat of the song is contained....
a great song... but "tuesday afternoon" could mean anything to anybody.... yet the moodys gave it more meaning for some reason... built a song around it...
without the music backing a simple statement.... it stays just that....
if it's music .. it's the music that gets you in... if you were expecting spoken poetry then it's the words that you'd be waiting for....

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 6/8/2009 3:08:52 AM | Kirsty McColl....Us amazonians, we know where we stand we've got kids, we've got jobs, why do we need a man? Us amazonians, we make out all right But want someone to hold in the forest at night.
Fast rocking rhythmn with south american taint.
ALso from the same album with the most beautiful blues jazz slow sexy rhythm and I don't have to lip sync cos can do this one quite well.
You go to my head And I know I'm alive. Your beautiful words stretch me out on a blanket of stars. I don't want to come down. I don't want to come down. Just let me stay, lost in your eyes.
But all time favourite to be played at funeral and kids all know it...if they don't I will kill them... Al De Meola band -Mediterranean Sundance. The album version not the youtube newish ones. Tis the most sublime, passionate, emotional piece of flamenco guitar duet EVER....ps the rest of their music REALLY SUCKS BIG TIME. lol. I mean BIG TIME.

| Whats rocks you in a song...., lyrics, tune, rhythm or all of them ?? Posted: 6/8/2009 4:04:30 AM | Lyrics, do get to me first...then if I connect, I would appreciate the melody/beat. Say The Smiths for example, humdrum, repetitive in melody but the poetry kind of grows on you and appreciate the whole catalogue...
'You shut your mouth how can you say I go about things the wrong way I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does'
'Nature is a language, can't you read?'
'You have destroyed my flower-like life'
'Love is natural and real but not for you and I, my love'
Listening on my long drive to Strawberry Switchblade a duo that I would never dream of listening to, but the song and lyrics got me...after listening a bit it dawned on me it was a song about suicide it seemed...coated in candy pop tune.
Just close your eyes and then remember The thoughts you've locked away When tomorrow comes you'll wish You had today
And as we sit here alone Looking for a reason to go on It's so clear that all we have now Are our thoughts of yesterday
If you're still there when it's all over I'm scared I'll have to say That a part of you has gone Since yesterday
I'm primarily a lyric guy...always looking to connect, but will except The Ramones. I mean its lyrically the dumbest thing...its so dumb it can only come from a genius (or four geniuses) and to marry it with a buzz saw droning guitar noise and military count 1,2,3,4......sold!
'Chewin' at a rhythm on my bubble gum, the sun is out and I want some' (I mean really...only a genius can piece that together)
'The KKK took my baby away'.
'I don't wanna be buried in a pet sematary.....don't want to live my life again.'
'Beat on the brat with a baseball bat, oh yeah!'
Oasis is another band that I'm not too big on...don't like stadium bands, but really like "Live Forever" lyrically and that Phil Spector-ish wall of guitar sound. Perfect combo for me.
'Maybe I don't really want to know, how your garden grows
There's heaps...like Lou Reed, Arlo Guthrie, who can forget Leonard Cohen...
