Habs win quarter finals - Riot 2 hours latter?Page 1 of 1
Two hours after the Habs won the quarter-finals against the Bruins, Montreal is victim to another riot. What's up with this? Are the rioters hockey fans or simply nutzoid kids taking advantage of the situation? Why do fans rejoice by rioting and looting instead of being elated with joy? How does being happy turn into madness? What's your take on this?

Personally, I think it is very shameful if it is, indeed, Habs fans that do this.

They could stand to show some class over there in Montreal. They booed the American National Anthem AGAIN, and then they riot all over the streets AGAIN. I've been there and the people seemed wonderful, but it seems there is a bit of a soccer hooligan mentality, and not just when it comes to the Habs fans. There's been rioting and looting after concerts, as well.

Habs win quarter finals - Riot 2 hours latter?

Two of the reasons I will root for a team after my own has been knocked out is the fan support and good sportsmanship of the team. Booing the American national anthem...uncalled for, hooliganism...uncalled for, two Montreal players sandwiching Kessel into the boards when they were up 3-0 (or were they up 4-0 when that happened? and they did get a penalty for it) in the middle of the third period and the coach standing there with a smug smile on his face...uncalled for!!

On my wish list: Flyers send the Habs packing in four games!

As I mentioned, I also think that rioting is a terrible thing to happen.

However my intitial question is, do you think the rioting was in direct connection to the Habs winning or since the riot happened 2 hours latter was it simply hooligans taking advantage of the win to smear Montreal police? Please, read the article to get the gist of what happened.

^^^"""...Two of the reasons I will root for a team after my own has been knocked out is the fan support and good sportsmanship of the team..."""

Flyers will probably send them packing in 6. They also cheered and roared Collaiocovo of the leafs a couple of months back when he crashed headfirst into the boards, and then soundly booed him as he got up after laying motionless on the ice for a good ten minutes. Like night and day when you see the way the Sabres fans behaved when Florida's Zitnik's throat got cut in Buffalo in that freak accident. Now you're talkin' some irony their where Buffalo sports fans totally outclass the Montreal peasantry by a country mile. Buffalo's not known for too many positive things. I know. I grew up an hour away from there. But they can be proud of the way they conducted themselves that night.

So it's not just the punks out on the streets that are peasants here.
Contrary to what the politico's are saying:

"""...Quebec cabinet minister Raymond Bachand, who is responsible for the Montreal region, said the riots are a shame and do not reflect the spirit of real hockey fans. "It's not the 22,000 fans who were at the Bell Centre who were part of that," said Bachand, who attended Monday night's game. "In any society there are bums, you know. Just people [who] take pleasure in mischief and vandalism...."""

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2008/04/22/qc-habsriot.html

Habs management made a similar statement as well to the same effect saying it wasn't the REAL Habs fans inside the building. Baloney. We've already seen how classless they can be with even their own, let alone with players from opposing teams.

If the city feels embarrassed then good. They darn well should be. pfft a riot over a first round victory. Total joke. I'm sure lots of people are now hoping for an early exit for them from the playoffs so we can avoid another storming of the Bastille by the peasants. Unbelievable behaviour for something so unassuming as a first round victory. For goodness sakes, they're only one quarter of the way down the road to Lord Stanley. I hope they're gone by next Saturday. Then they can go smash up their city all they want. Peasants.

Every city has its own problems. Philly certainly isn't Oz; 3 people on average are murdered every day.

The few Canadien fans I know are decent people, I can't say the same thing for say Dallas Cowboy fans.

Still maybe security presence ought to be beefed a bit? How about surveillance cameras in the arena area? Simple deterrents are often all that is required to keep a riot from starting.

Lets talk hockey! I'm just tickled pink the Flyers are competitive this year. Last year was a total loss. Flyers are 1-3 against Montreal in Stanley Cup playoff competition, including a 1976 Stanley Cup loss (DAMMIT).

Screw the Flyers what a wonderful year they had last year. True they took out AO Semin Fedorov and Green but now they going to face a real up and coming goalie. I like to see the flyers swept but they have too much talent to go in 4 I say Habs in 5 or 6

Just found out how to find the other sports forums I was stuck to 2 links flames and painkillers. I see at the top how to navigate and geez thereès millions of messages on here how many people are actually on here. When the guy said he runs it out of his house or apt I figure it was just Can US not worldwide.

Hmm Ièm a Flames fan but I remember the disrespect of Ducks and Sharks booing the Canadian anthem and then watching the Oilers smoke them off. I like the US anthem I always sing it when ther Giants play, sorry if any Patriot fans read this Better luck next year if you want a perfect season.

Bikeman..I would consider Philly the trailer park of fandom at best. That said, I am a Cowboy fan..

OT: I don't begrudge Texans who root for the Cowboys. Hell that makes sense. I'm thinking of non-Texan Cowboy fans. Especially those in Philly. They tend to push the Easy buttons on the non-knowledgable Eagle fans (which unfortunately abound around Philly).

There's some overlap between Eagle and Flyers fans for sure, but there are lots of knowledgable Flyers fans. It's a very different fan base. Lots of Eagles fans are just Eagles fans during football season and that's it for them (I don't think their peanut-sized brains could soak in much of anything else other than beer).

On topic: I think the Canadiens are tough, they swept the Flyers this season; I hope the police can up their presence around the Centennial Plaza during the rest of the Canadiens playoff run so that people can safely attend and exit their home games.

""" think the Canadiens are tough... they swept the Flyers this season..."""
They can't be that tough. The leafs took the season series from them.
They're first place finish overall in the east will go down as one of the great mysteries of the 07/08 season. It sure left me scratching my head when i watched the leafs outplay them every game this season. Just proves that literally anyone could win the east.

They swept the Flyers true. But the games were done before the trade deadline. Flyers picked up a journeyman d-man in Modry and LW Prospal who netted 3 goals in round one after that. I have a sneaky feeling this series will be a coming-out party for a kid called Jeff Carter. The speed in this series should set up nicely for him. He's fast, but he's big too and likes to throw the body. Lupul will have to step up as well now that flyers lose Knuble's 29 goals on the right wing for awhile. Flyers will definitely be getting in this kid Price's kitchen and rattling his young cage. Flyers will get very physical with this club. They have a real nice mix of experience and youth, size, skill and speed.

Flyers fans are some of the meanest. Just ask the guy that started a fistfight with Tie Domi a couple of years ago when he was in the penalty box. But at least the fans would have more class than the caps fans showed the other night pelting Carter in the face with soft drinks and garbage in his post game interview at ice level. Nasty stuff.

Habs fans will have lots ot boo about in this one as both french-canadians Briere and Biron refused to sign with the habs this past summer no matter how much money they offered. Didn't want to play there. Briere will hear the wrath especially as he made it a special point of saying a couple of times that it wouldn't matter how much better their offers were. He didn't want anything to do with the habs fans. So this one should have it's share of storylines.

The Flyers better hope it's a coming out party for one Marty Biron or this will be a short series.

There's lots of parity, that's for sure. The Flyers are a weird team. They go on 10 game losing streaks, then win 10 games in a row. Everyone in Philly is high on Mike Richards. It's good to see Vinny Prospal back on the team.

The Flyers better hope it's a coming out party for one Marty Biron or this will be a short series.
Biron has played pretty well this season, 5 shutouts, he's carried the team at times; needless to say the team with the best goaltending usually wins the playoff series.

Flyers fans are some of the meanest. Just ask the guy that started a fistfight with Tie Domi a couple of years ago when he was in the penalty box.
If anybody hasn't seen this, you'll split a gut laughing when you see it. I think that guy was also an Eagles fan. Not very bright to taunt Tie Domi and then fall into his penalty box.

But at least the fans would have more class than the caps fans showed the other night pelting Carter in the face with soft drinks and garbage in his post game interview at ice level.
I don't think DC is a great hockey town. Often during Flyers games in DC there are as many Flyers fans as there are Caps fans, making the two-three hour trip down south.

Habs fans will have lots ot boo about in this one as both french-canadians Briere and Biron refused to sign with the habs this past summer
The Flyers good Quebecers on the squad: Briere, Biron, and Simon Gagne.

First they riot then prior to the singing of the National Anthems they have to be reminded to show respect. Thats a classy bunch of fans there in Montreal.

Too bad the Flyers choked a chance to jump ahead of Les Canadiens. It's tough playing 3 playoff games in 4 days in three different cities. Any anthem booing? Hopefully the city wasn't rioting after the outcome of that one.

"""...Any anthem booing? Hopefully the city wasn't rioting after the outcome of that one. .."""
No anthem booing. Of course that could be because the public address system specifically requested that the fans not boo the visiting clubs anthem just before they did it. I'm not even going to touch that one.

No riots either as far as we know. Guess they were satisfied with throwing beers on the Flyer in the penalty box just to show and prove to us all that it's only peasants out on the street that don't comprehend sportsmanship. Ne pas comprendre.

The quicker that club gets eliminated this year, the better off hockey will be for it. JMO

Too bad the Flyers took their foot off their throats with a minute to go last night. That was the Flyers game. I'm amazed I'm actually pulling for a Flyers team. Has to be a first in my lifetime. This series is going to get nasty by the time it gets to Philly. Especially with young Mr. Downie subbing for Knuble.

I'd love to see Philly try to get back Brashear and replace Downie with him; what that kid Downie did during the preseason in Ottawa was abysmal.

Last night causes a guy to have flashbacks to the mid-70's thinking back to Junior D playing the Dumbville Mudcats or the Fort Erie Meteors getting doused and showered with all kinds of liquids sitting in the box. Putting a cop in the box helped a bit. Going up into the stands didn't help calm things down though.

Memory must be getting bad. Last time i remember seeing that in professional hockey was when the mighty Quinn laid Bobby Orr out cold coming out of his end with his head down. Early 70's at the old boston Gahden. But back then it was the full bottle they threw. They pelted Quinn that night to the point of serious endangerment. None of this plastic cup stuff of today. Orr must have been out cold for close to half an hour. They say Quinn almost knocked him right out of his skates. That game took forever to play.

If habs fans are going to pelt players in the box with brewskies, this one's gonna get real ugly right quick. That Flyers club is too steeped in tradition to be putting up with that crap. They'll go up into the stands next time and try and put a halt to it themselves.. Flyers fans will have taken note for sure. Philly has taken quite a shine to Richards. The battles in the 70's were classics. This one has the potential.
