| Cycle-friendly Canadian city? Posted: 4/24/2008 4:11:25 PM | Hi all,
Planning to work in Canada in approx. 6 months. Could anyone give me an idea on where in Canada I should head to? I'm interested incommuting by bicycle, so places where there's some safe infrastructure would be helpful.
Thanks! | |

We have bike paths to just about everywhere in the city and even have bicycle lanes on some main streets. Many people commute this way from about April to November every year. Impossible during the winter months due to the snow and cold though. Ottawa is a very green city, lots of parks, 2 rivers and a lake within the city. Look us up on the internet!

Renting isn't a problem, and the each part of the city has its own charms. The Rideau Canal and River Rivers have some beautiful views, and the Parkway along the Ottawa River is spectacular!

There are loads of bike paths there.
Three rivers, actually. The Ottawa, the Gatineau and the Rideau....and also the Rideau Canal...longest skating "rink"(it isn't circular ) in the world! Many use it as a mode of transportation in the winter.
Edmonton also...here's a link... http://www.edmontonplus.ca/feature/crazy_for_cycling/8538/cycling_trails.jsp Vancouver... http://vancouver.ca/engsvcs/transport/cycling/routes.htm
Google....(insert city here) bike paths....
Now if you want some hard core biking, you can always come to my neck of the woods.... http://www.trails.com/activity.asp?area=11114

Vancouver isn't awful, if you learn to dress for the rain, and figure out sensible riding routes.
Nanaimo is OK too, although I've been mooned more often and had more things thrown at me while cycling than I ever experienced riding in Vancouver. There's great mountain biking within 10 miles of downtown.

Calgary alberta area, ussually has first snow fall on halloween or a day before/after. So as for biking i would say not really going to happen. If you dont want to hav a car. Calgary has good transits, but a very busy city, Vancouver or almost anywhere in BC ussualy has mild winters and it doesnt last that long. Its a busy city too, but way nicer. depending what your doing for work. if you work in an office i would say start looking at cities that have good public transit to where you have to work. or pick a city blind and find a place to rent where everything you need is close. its pretty much the same anywhere in canada. depending on what you want to see
