| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/1/2005 12:16:11 PM | I ask because many Muslims and Christians think so when there is nothing in the Koran(Quaran) or Bible that forbids it,in fact drinking wine is mentioned several times in the Bible. I also find it ironic that cultivating hashish and opium is ok in some Muslim countries but alcohol is strictly forbidden.
What are your thoughts?

| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/1/2005 1:27:08 PM | John 2 Jesus Changes Water to Wine
1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there,
2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."
5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."
They did so,
9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside
10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."
11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
Any questions? I agree though that drinking for more than just a buzz is not advisable. I think that one should drink slowly then when the buzz first arrives stop and drink something else. It has been shown time and time again that drinking causes us to say and do things we otherwise would be to wise to do. It creates a feeling of not caring what the consequences are. And of course that could be bad. Driving is most defiantly affected and you won't even care. So watch out and maybe try something a little more natural and don't mix it with booze.

| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/1/2005 1:32:37 PM | | First thing Noah did after he got off the ark was plant a vineyard and get plastered. Of course one of his sons made fun of his drunk ass. But Noah had the last laugh when he made all of that smart-alec's children slaves of his other sons. | |

It's in Genesis 9, starting at verse 20.
20: Noah was the first tiller of the soil. He planted a vineyard; 21: and he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent. 22: And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23: Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it upon both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father's nakedness. 24: When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, 25: he said, "Cursed be Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers."

| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/1/2005 3:22:03 PM | That Jesus' first miracle after the incarnation was to make alcohol(wine)? (John 2:7-11)
That Jesus was accused of being a glutton and drunkard, and while He denied the charges, He did respond that He "comes eating AND drinking"? (Luke 7:33-35). By denying being a glutton or drunkard, Jesus knew the difference between moderate drinking and drunkeness - just as He knew the difference between moderate eating and gluttony (shall we prohibit eating because of gluttony?). This is where the issue becomes important: If Jesus drank alcohol and drinking alcohol in moderation were a sin, then Jesus could not be the sinless Christ, and our faith would be in vain!

| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/2/2005 11:17:29 PM | Sorry if I have repeated anyone elses opinions.. I didn't read the answers already provided short of the one above me.
So here is my opinion.
Alcohal is not a sin...
Jesus gave his Apostles wine at the last supper.. He told them to drink for it was his blood... Wine is alcohal.
Monks.. Monks are the people who made beer.. Monks are not the picture of evil last I looked. Beer is alcohal.
Alcohal itself is not a sin... Over indulgence is. But God is loving and forgiving otherwise he never would have given up his only son Jesus to wash away all of our sins.
Of the Seven deadly sins.. Alcohal is not on the list. Gluttony is though.. as is greed. Moderation is the key..
Don't mind me.. I just finished watching The Passion of the Christ..
However as karlie quoted before me....
God is forgiving... so I drink.. lol.. that is a good one.

Not in my Church...beer is not considered by the Orthodox Church to be alcohol, and so on strict fast days that wine and alcohol are forbidden....we are 'forced' to drink beer. Opa!

| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/3/2005 10:18:13 AM | Beer is not alcohal! Woo hoo! Where do I sign up? I could use a Corona tonight! LOL Just kidding..
That is one of the strangest things I have ever heard about the whole alcohal topic.. Something I will be adding to my list of strange but true notes..

| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/3/2005 11:38:56 AM | I agree though that drinking for more than just a buzz is not advisable.
Its difficult to take liberty to define the difference between a "buzz" and being drunk.By current law most "buzz" due to alcohol is considered to be under the influence and therefore "drunk". EVERY study conducted has shown that drinkers don't know the difference themselves dispite what they CLAIM. It appears CLEAR that the Bible condones the use of a TYPE of alcohol...WINE and a function/time with meals/food. This, interestingly enough is something supported by current health/dieticians who agree that wine with a meal is good for digestion, blood and heart. Drunkeness is spoken against in many Bible verses. This leads me to believe that a LIMITED use of WINE is quite acceptable. What is "moderate" drinking? Biblically, dietarily and legally; 1 goblett/glass of WINE with a meal. I feel it would be a far and incorrect stretch to include any other alcoholic beverages. Smoking tobacco is not mentioned(not indigenious)but because it like many forms of alcohol are harmful to the body/temple is NOT in good keeping with God's Word.

| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/3/2005 12:34:15 PM | | I guess it's worth noting that the Nazarites (like Sampson) were not allowed to drink alcohol (or eat or drink any grape related products), but the fact that the bible makes a special note of that leads me to believe that all the other Israelites that hadn't taken the vow of the Nazarite were allowed to drink and not offend God. | |

|
| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/4/2005 8:07:19 AM | | I think that questions like this are inherently unanswerable, because whether something is a "sin" is connected to a particular faith. Invariably, there will be disagreement that cannot be reconciled, because everyone will answer based on their own particular faith. There is not just one answer. Know what I mean? | |
|
| Is Drinking Alcohol A Sin? Posted: 6/4/2005 9:45:47 AM | alcohol are harmful to the body/temple is NOT in good keeping with God's Word Then let's be just, and replace "God" with the word "his Holyness"
Is this what your looking for? Can I not celebrate my own history and traditions without feeling threaten by the intensity of other faith commiments?
Regardless of what you call God I have reason to believe most will understand who God is.
