| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin [Thread Closed] Posted: 4/26/2008 11:19:25 PM | This is a lttle prayer dedicated to the separation of church and state. I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen.
I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.
Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll to to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money! He's all powerful, but he can't handle money!
I've begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, a lovely day. There's no mystery, no one asks for money, I don't have to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to God are all answered at about the same 50-percent rate.
Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it, religion has actually convinced people that there's an INVISIBLE MAN...LIVING IN THE SKY...who watches every thing you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten special things that he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time...but he loves you.
Hope you enjoy... | |

First of all, the term "religion" encompasses all religions, not just Judaism or Christianity. Buddhists or Taoists, for example, would not be able to identify this worldview you described with their religion.
Second, I'm not quite sure Jews or Christians would, either. At best, it's a bad caricature which would have gotten an F in any normal Jewish and/or Christian theology course. God may be thought of as a "man in the sky" for illustrative purposes, but as far as I know, Jews and Christians believe God to be an omnipotent and omnipresent being. Furthermore, to reduce either of those two faiths to the Ten Commandments would be doing a great injustice to them.

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 4/27/2008 1:09:00 AM | Jacobus ^^^Justice in religion - from a brilliant comedian...now thats funny !
George Carlin has been known for his no-nonsense approach to life on the planet, as he doesn't engage in poking fun at topical material.
A quote from George Carlin ""Finding things that make sense and go somewhere, and putting them in form - finding them from ideas and little scraps of thoughts and making them into fully-formed essays""

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 4/27/2008 6:52:18 AM | LOL! I got stuck on this in your opening post:
I've begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, a lovely day. You better start worshipping the clouds and rain too! Your "lovely day" would be burnt and dry without that. In that case you'd be in the place you mentioned:
a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish... Sorry OP, but how can one get serious about George Carlin's views about religion!

how can one get serious about George Carlin's views about religion How can anybody with an open mind not get serious about Carlin's views on religion? It's an important satirical examination of an institution that has dominated far too much of our history.
It's also worth noting that by "religion," Carlin does not intend to attack personal spiritual convictions if they do no harm to others. His wrath is directed against organized religious institutions; that's a distinction he's pointed out himself on stage a couple of times.
|
| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 4/27/2008 8:24:36 AM | Mr Mxyzptlk, I stand corrected. (actually, I sit corrected, lol) You are right, when he discusses organized religious institutions. I have heard him, though, cut down personal religious beliefs at times... it sort of slips on in there. | |

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 4/28/2008 1:43:21 AM | | Well, though Carlin usually has some interesting observations, I am not going to put much stock in his views as he has been admittedly, drugged up since the 60s. George also seems to think that religious people are in favor of the marriage of Church and State. Nothing could be farther from the Truth. The last thing we need is to have the government telling us what to believe. Lastly, I cannot speak for Judaism, but in Christianity our Faith is not based on us keeping the 10 Commandments but are inability to do so. | |

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 4/28/2008 4:03:13 AM | George is definately the man. its a shame he is so old now, I dont think he is long for the world. I think most intelligent people share his somewhat bleak view of existence, though I dont think I would want to live in a world where the majority didnt have some religion. It acts as a check on human behaviour and gives a lot of people comfort and hope in the face of lifes grim realities. | |

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/23/2008 6:28:20 PM | | Huh! I've never heard of him but was following the new George Carlin thread with interest and voted for its preservation but it has disappeared while I was at work. Boring. | |
|
| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/23/2008 6:48:32 PM | The onme in this forum was deleted owing to the OP being a complete bigot, I would say a christian bigot, but he got ripped a new one by the christians in this forum for gloating over someones death
The other thread is in the News/Current events forum where the more deluded haven't yet posted to **** that one up..
|
| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/23/2008 7:10:49 PM | | Yes, I recall some respondents fairly effortlessly ripping holes in his bigoted stance, but I was more interested in Mr Carlins vebal assaults on religion, of which the OP included many examples. They were of more interest than the gloating really, and the reason why I'd have liked to see the thread preserved. Oh well... | |
|
| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/23/2008 11:07:57 PM | | Carlin always ripped on religion so I see nothing unfair about religious people ripping on him. However, as he is now deceased, that would be somewhat tasteless. Best that can be said is that now George will know whether his views were accurate or not. | |
|
| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/23/2008 11:34:32 PM | Carlin's views on religion were dead on perfect.
You can't believe in magical flying beings with flaming swords, devils and demons that stalk human prey daily and a great, all powerful, all knowing, all seeing magical creature who lives in the sky but does nothing and still call yourself a rational person.
He will be missed. | |

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/24/2008 8:38:27 AM | I personally don't look to George Carlin--or any comedian, for that matter- to reveal to me the "truth" about anything, least of all my religion.
That being said, I think it's possible to have a strong belief in religion but still have enough of a sense of humor to appreciate someone satirizing it, without being offended. Heck, two of my favorite movies are "Dogma" and "Life of Brian."
I don't necessarily agree with Carlin's views--due to the inaccuracy and generalization of some of them--but I respect the man for speaking his mind. And I still laugh my butt off whenever I listen to his older stuff.
He was funny and will be missed.

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/24/2008 3:38:44 PM | religion is something NO one can be right on, because there is NO proof of what one is right, and so it's a debate that will go on forever
I guess the only people who know the truth are the ones who have left us........

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 6/25/2008 10:59:56 PM | First off: it was a quote of george carlin, not his opinion. 2nd: leave him alone 3rd: we really dont know what is the true religion and what ones are not 4th: I think there is truth in each one 5: we will NEVER know, and those who know are dead and they know but are not telling us
thats all folks | |

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 7/5/2008 1:41:37 AM | | I thought I summed it up pretty well when I said "You can't believe in magical flying beings with flaming swords, devils and demons that stalk human prey daily and a great, all powerful, all knowing, all seeing magical creature who lives in the sky but does nothing and still call yourself a rational person." But if you have any insight or proof in to how that statement is wrong, feel free to share. | |
|
| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 7/5/2008 1:43:38 PM | On the other hand, nobody will call a person irrational if he believes in intangible things such as love, fear, hate, and so on.
Kalidor, just because the all seeing Person who lives in the sky does nothing for you, does not mean that He does nothing.....

| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 7/5/2008 2:07:01 PM | I always like the Carlin quote about religion:
Life is sacred? Who said so, God? Hey, if you read history you'll realize that God is one of the leading causes of death...has been for thousands of years. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, all taking turns killing each other because God told them it was a good idea.

This is rather disconcerting! Biggest cause of death is God, really?
If you are talking about natural death you might have a valid argument , but then again God promised us a life after this one, so wont get too excited about that fact.
As for untimely death , have a hard time seeing this point. God didn't tell me to smoke my Players , didnt tell me to drive too fast and don't wear my seat belt ! Sheesh, I do that stuff all by my self, in spite of what God told me.
Biggest mass murderers in history, like Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot , don't recall God as being a factor in their decisions.
|
| The TRUTH About Religion From George Carlin Posted: 7/10/2008 10:27:54 PM | Really? Because according to your own mythology, God killed *every living person on the planet* Except one guy and his family.
I'd say he's got nothing on Hitler in that regard.
