OK, so if you don't have young daughters, this story may have slipped by you but 15 yo singer/actress Miley Cyrus (daughter of Achy breaky Billy Ray) and star of Disney's Hannah Montana was recently photographed by Annie Leibowitz for Vanity Fair The pictures are to be issued next month and are already creating a storm as being inappropriate pictures of a young girl (who is also a role model for much younger children).
The pics and the story are available from the Torygraph
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/04/29/wcyrus129.xml

What are your thoughts?
Artistic or Inappropriate?
Tasteful or Tawdry?
Manipulated or Manipulating?

I'm in two minds TBH
On the one hand, it's not like she's flaunting her body particularly, on the other she does appear dishevelled and a bit knowing, which doesn't look too nice on a 15 yo.

I would say it was artistic, save the fact that it's been done a million times before. I really fail to see the need for it, what will they achieve.

Both artistic and inappropriate in my opinion.

Tasteful pose but tawdry when you consider its a CHILD posing.

And we wonder why we have underage sex, children wanting boob jobs etc etc etc

I have to agree with Brian here.

The photograph shown in the T'graph article is far to 'sexual' to be appropriate for a child.

I actually have to agree with Bri on this occasion.
The girl is fifteen. There is no need for apparent nudity, even if it is under a sheet.
It's a nice picture...tastefully done...but NOT on a child! Its no better than child porn, which governments etc are in huge uproar about (and rightfully so!) So why because its done by a celebrity photographer, and called "artistic", should it be any less disgusting?!

I wouldn't allow such a picture of my 15 year old Daughter to appear in such a pose and as she is a Minor my consent (or her Mother's) would be required.

Poor taste but great publicity for Vanity Fair whether they use it or not and they no doubt will regardless of the reaction.

hhmmm a storm in a tea cup i think.Ive seen the pic,yes she is a 15 yr old girl, but the pic isnt mis-representating that, she has very little make up on and looks like a fresh faced 15yr old.
IMO it was probably bad judgement to give the illusion of her being naked under a sheet but thats all it is an illusion.
That said,if it was my daughter appearing in tabloids across the world in that pose,i think the proverbial would hit the fan in this household!

My daughter has just turned 16 and i wouldnt let her have these types of pics.

Artistic yes, but very obviously sexually teasing and "come hither".

Well allegedly BRC, MRC and "her people" all saw the photos while they were at the shoot (beauty of the digital age, no waiting at Jessops for a week) and they were happy enough then, so who's using whom? Vanity Fair, or Miley?
There seems a lot of pimping of websites and upcoming shows from both sides.

OK yes it could be classed as wrong as at 15 they are somewhat provocative as people have said.

I bet this is all a ploy from her agents though. Lets face it she is 15 and is getting to the end of the child star age group. Doesn't want to be typecast purely in that role of "disney kid" and is trying to prove she can do something else, like be the next sexy hollywood starlet in the making.

It's all about simply furthering her career, and the agent ensuring they still get paid for the next 10-15 years. I'm sure that her, and her agent, are loving all the controversial pulicity it is causing as well.

What is it they say "Any publicity is good publicity!"

For a reported billion quid, I'd sell my offspring for medical experiments.

But ok, it isn't exactly the right image to be projecting for young teenage girls.

So. When is she 16????

The picture found in the link is somewhat provocative... not shocking...

But thoughts occurred to me - this WAS done for the publicity although she allegedly states she is embarrassed by them and apologises to her fans. America is the land of contradictions - one of which is their adulation of a sex industry combined with their purient family values.... Her family and agents would have known the outcome from this....

The other is ...... OK she's 15, she's covered by the sheet. But what next? What age is deemed OK for the next child star? What is exposed next time? How far will it go before it's too much?

If this is inappropriate then how about all the 15 yr old children (girls) who regularly parade around towns and cities every weekend in next to nothing???

Yes I can see how these are seen as inappropriate but I tend to agree with the posters about this being a storm in a teacup...

So yes, she is posing with that slight twinkle in her eye, hello, she's 15 not 9, only one more year before shes 'legally' allowed to have sex (or maybe not depending on what state she lives in but Im not 100% on american law!) so she is bound to be aware of what these shots could be insinuating...

Im not sure I would be happy for my daughter to pose like this but she is a celebrity and needs to make that leap from child star to adult star so shoots like these arent unheard of... who remembers the furore over Britney Spears Rolling Stones mag shot when she was just 16 or 17???

I dont think it is blatant sexual exploitation of her, nor do I think she or her guardians should be so merclessy lambasted for it, I think it looks quite classy and wouldnt be out of place amongst those old style Italian artist works (I cant think of any to quote right now!) But to be fair they maybe could have waited until she was 16 to avoid all this hulabaloo...

As the mother of an (almost) six year old daughter, I wont be banning Hannah Montana in our house because of this, all girls grow up and become aware of their sexuality some point during their mid teens, its just a shame that these famous young starlets (Britney Spears, Jamie Lynn Spears, Miley, Jessica Simpson, that young bird off High School Musical) get so villified if they put a single foot wrong.... and have to grow up into red blooded young women on the world's stage.

I think some people (ie the media, the harping parents who are baying for Mileys blood) need to sort out the real priorities so to speak... There is this outcry over a couple pics, when there are stories such as that young woman locked up for 24 yrs and kept as her fathers own personal sex slave..... That is something Im more concered about protecting my young daughter from...

Sammi Jay, you've just reminded me of the furore about Annabella LuWin from Bow Wow Wow in the early 80s. She was under 16 when she posed naked for an album cover based on Renoir's (?) Picnic painting. Again the publicity was huge, which was what they waned.
I'd prefer not to see young girls in these sorts of poses. I know she's nearly 16 but I certainly wouldn't want my J to do anything like that.

15 is not too young to date and we are all aware that young girls grow up so fast. The boys still tend to trail on the maturity.

The pictures are beautiful and tasteful of a young woman in her prime, they show nothing but her back, I am sure young men will be wanting to date her quite quickly with that sort of portfolio.

Think what the OP is trying to say at 15 is she old enough to date? Of course she is, she is rich she is famous and she is ready for boys - and I am sure she will be dating real real soon.

Storm in a tea cup i think.

Both the actress / singer & the photographer are successful in their chosen fields and Vanity Fair has a huge circulation, it was all for the publicity me thinks.

The only thing i found shocking is that fact that Miley looks like a piggy faced extra from Lord of the Rings in the picture shes a lovely looking girl on her tv show.

I was reading that Disney is saying she was manipulated into taking these pics by Vanity Fair...Vanity Fair says her parents were on the set all day--I believe the magazine--her parents were okay with this until the people spoke up--now they are back peddling...

She is nude in the photos with a sheet draped over her--well some of her--but the pics are seductive--sexy--she is 15...yikes--hope her dad is happy he has made some monkey spanking material out of his daughter. Especially a dad who usually is more protective of a daughter...where was his head at on this day?? up his butt??...as soon as she was told to disrobe and hold a sheet up he should've been asking them if they were nuts...I've seen adults posing nude with the sheet slightly covering them(as the sheet is barely covering her)...and the message is "guess what is under here??"

Reminds me of that interview with Jessica Simpsons dad --when asked if he thought his daughter would be famous he replied--"of course I knew it--she has 40DDs"

That is just friggin wrong........ewwwww

"Cyrus appears apparently topless with a satin sheet draped around her in the photographs, which will appear in the June issue of Vanity Fair."

"Apparently"
People assume nudity because of what they see, also remember her age, she would not have been bullied into anything UNLESS her parents were doing the bullying.

All a storm in a teacup to me, i would be more worried with shops targeting 6 to 9 yr old girls with underwear and tee shirts with slogans on fit for people ten years their senior. (C&A were busted for this a couple of years ago with underwear they were selling which had "so many boys so little time" on them)

The thought of not earning any more of that billion dollar revenue is probably what has sparked off this unrest, nothing more, nothing less.

I don't like the photo. Not for moral reasons, I just don't think it looks very good.

This is a strange issue. Young women (Miley, Britney Spears, Vanessa Hudgens and Lindsay Lohan jump to mind) are not so different whether they're famous or not. They are young girls, yes, but also teenagers, going through the usual experiences and desires, growth and experimentation as any other girls. All girls that age (or any older, for that matter) want to look sexy. Whether us old biddies think it's appropriate is hardly the point.

What I think we need to do is give these young women some space, not make our "respect" for them conditional on their absolute purity, let them grow up, let them be normal, and let them do the stupid things that you and I all had the opportunity to do anonymously and without it ending up on the internet.

It's not IMO, a dating issue. Of course 15 isn't too young to date, within reason. It's the sexualisation of a child that is under discussion

The pictures are beautiful and tasteful of a young woman in her prime,

Again, a young woman? No, a child.

they show nothing but her back,

Quite right, there isn't a anything exposed and the shot is 'arty' however as someone else pointed out it will undoubtedly be spanking material.. She appears knowing and inviting, since our biggest sex organs are our brains and the biggest part of communication is non-verbal it is the look on her face combined with the rest of the image that makes it disturbing to me.

I am sure young men will be wanting to date her quite quickly with that sort of portfolio.

Because she is a lovely and personable girl (I assume), or because she looks like she gives out?

Think what the OP is trying to say at 15 is she old enough to date?

No, the OP asked, quite clearly I thought, what forumites thought about the picture, not what MC is up to in her private life.

I suppose when I say this I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, so here goes.

First of I wouldn't let my daughter have the photo taken that seems to be bothering quiet a few people. But on the other hand I don't exactly see that there is too much wrong with the photo itself.

What I do think is wrong is that so many people are reading more into it and to me that is scary.

The rest of the photo's are on another webside, I think people will be able to judge better if they see the other photos involved.

What I do have my doubts about though is the fact that Miley is having one or two rather provocative photos taken with her Dad

Things that make you hmmm!!!

There's a shortcut to the images mentioned http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLifM9lIjQk&feature=bz303

The subject of this photo is a CHILD !

And the degree of sexualisation is not an excuse. Ok, its not showing breasts or nipples or bum etc but its pose is not an ordinary everyday one - but its still deliberately sexualised. Its not the amunt of flesh or which parts on view - its the pose.

We would all agree that a man with a pic of a naked 15 yo girl would be wrong - this is because he sees a CHILD as a sexual obect. The same goes for this photo - it has a CHILD in a pose intended to look sexy.

If you saw a PoF profile with the member posed like this, you would assume she is up for a fcuk on the first date. So, why is it ok to have a CHILD pose like this ?
