| Having serious problems access my Gmail account, etc Posted: 4/30/2008 12:38:39 AM | > Dear friends > I have never initiated a post before, so I hope this works and that someone can help. > I have a Sony Vaio laptop, and a dial-up connection. It's always slow, but sometimes it's very slow. But this isn't the problem. > Lately, for some reason, I cannot access my Gmail account, no matter how I try. I keep getting half-way in and then a little square-shaped warning sign comes up with something like "cannot access Gmail///.com etc etc aborted". Or something like that. I click on the OK to shut it up and try again, but the same thing happens. I am also getting this 'occasionally' now when I go into Amazon to search for books. > I don't understand why this is happening now. I joined up with Gmail two years ago and everything was fine and dandy until a few weeks ago, when this started 'slowly'. > I've done one of those full system scans for viruses (I've got Norton) but it's clean, apart from the usual tracking bug, which I 'fix and delete'. I also did a C disk fragmenting run, which didn't really amount to much and offered precious little extra speed. I have also noticed that my screen keeps 'freezing' up, with applications crossing over, one below the other, and just 'hanging' there on-screen for ages. It's at these times I go and make a cup of coffee and hope that by the time I get back it has all settled down. > Is there something wrong here? As far as my account goes, I can still get into Hotmail, but I prefer Gmail - it has more going for it, until lately, that is. > Any help would be mightily appreciated. - Peter | |

| Having serious problems access my Gmail account, etc Posted: 4/30/2008 4:50:01 AM | gmail has a link on it for people unable to log in to their account, checked mine a few mins ago and works fine
www.ccleaner.com has a free and useful utility to clear stuff not needed, worth running it
maybe clear passwords and cookies for gmail ?
at the run command, type msconfig and check out the stuff running at startup, suspect you will not need all of them, ctrl alt del aka taskmanager is a good way to see what it really running on the pc and then goto google to see what they are

> I've just deleted dozens of music files that I haven't listened to in years, and deleted photographs and images and things like that - and it seems to work faster. Much faster. Perhaps this was the root of the problem. > Many thanks to you guys. You baffle me with your language. I am a semi-Luddite when it comes to computers. > Best wishes and thanks again - Peter.

| Having serious problems access my Gmail account, etc Posted: 4/30/2008 9:32:00 PM | I have noticed some very strange things with web-based emails lately especially using firefox. I read an article on digg recently that stated that firefox is under more attacks from hackers and maliscious programs then before.
Anyway here is a work around for the gmail issue.

No problem dude and I like the name too. You would probably laugh at how I came up with the name. I hope that link works for you. A lot of people seem to have problems accessing their gmail accounts lately. I am surprised that Google hasn't fixed this yet.

| Having serious problems access my Gmail account, etc Posted: 5/2/2008 12:00:01 AM | You will need to routinely defrag your hard drive, delete some files etc. Here is a link that shows you how with pictures so you can easily follow along, make sure to do it at least once a month. Also as suggested you should use ccleaner frequently. For browser security I suggest you sandboxie. It is a program to contain all files in a certain space so it does not affect your system. No spyware, viruses and trojans to worry about as long you run within the sandboxie program. The only time you don't want to run sandboxie is when you actually want to download something on to your computer, for example downloading a pic etc. I suggest you do not receive any files, if someone wants to show you some pictures they can upload it to a site.
