In my never ending quest to entertain myself (it would be so much easier if someone would step up TO entertain me) I have found a new live music venue.
It's not really new to Calgary but it is new to me.

OE: You might wanna know where.
Mikeys Juke Joint, 1901 10 Ave SW
Every Monday is Blue Monday, hosted by (one of) my favourite local musicians, Steve Pineo.
They have $0.25 wings, beer, and live blues.

Care to join me for a night of fun and music? I'll be there ~8 pm

Hope to see you there.

Tim Williams hosts a jam at Mikey's on Tuesday nights as well--another great blues artist.
If you ever get the chance to see Brian McCullough or Gerd Krause host a jam session, go.
Guaranteed good music and great times. Brian also occasionally plays at Mikey's.
Ironwood has great live music and jam sessions; Shamrock has started a blues jam on Wednesdays.
(If you're lucky, you can also often catch the Mocking Shadows jamming at the Shammy when they're not gigging--excellent local act that plays blues, funk, soul, ska.)

There's a rumour traveling via the moccasin telegraph that King Eddie is reopening, too...

PS: Another fabulous local band, Bryan Bayley and the Circus, are playing a fundraiser this Monday (May 5) at the Ironwood: Shave Your Lid for Kids. Brain McCullough will be playing, as well. The evening will feature a silent auction; bid for your rights to shave one of the musicians bald. By the end of the night, all of them will be chrome domes. Fun.

G.E.M. - too bad you can't join us on Monday. Would you be more interested if it was a Tuesday? Tim Williams on Tuesdays, same location.

BookAddict, I had a giggle, cause it is too far for you to come for the blues, but isn't it the same distance from Calgary to the S.Side gatherings? , maybe some week, you will be around on a Monday!

PeiganJan, Bryan Bayley & C ircus, Brian McCullough.
I am guessing you will vouch for these boys!! Ironwood is as close for me as Mikey's is, so maybe another time there. And I also heard today that the Eddie is going to open again. Would be nice!

Anyway, will be at Mikey's around 8 tomorrow, would be nice to have some company.

I KNOW, I am such a horrible person!

A certain someone had been singing your praises though, so I can't wait to meet you. I'll probably be making my way down more often come June, and hope to attend some of the fun events you guys have going. In the meantime, I'm stuck in Edmonton, and "I guess that's why they call it the blues".

LOL, I'm dragging her to the Sunday Breakfast thing later this month or in early June ;-)..does that suffice. But she'll be around more because I ordered a "visitor" parking pass so she has to use it. And when shes' at my place that'll make FOUR POF'ers on the same street.

i will *definitely* vouch for my boys!
(maybe i'm just biased...? *ponder* nope. they are, w/o a doubt, fabulous.)

i would do mikey's tonight, but i was at ironwood last night and *bagged* today.
hope you enjoy the show! tim is hosting, isn't he...? that will be a blast!

elvis: FOUR POF'ers on one street!! whe-heeew! (that will make our street The Hoppin' Place to be, hunh? (; now we just got to get that "country boy" out a little more, too!)

Yep, we have the highest concentration of POF'ers in Calgary ;-). Well one of those POF'ers will only be there certain weekends when I'm not at her place.

On that note, once I get moved into the new building, what you think about planning something for June or July? I was wondering if WyldWood would host a POF party? If not, do you think OJ's would host a POF party?

Ya see, as a now regular attendee to Edmonton get togethers, it shames my Calgary ass into knowing Edmonton produces finer & more frequent POF get togethers. This cannot be allowed.

ootah!!
me likey!

Wildwood might host. we could also see about Mikey's; that would be a swell little joint to have a gathering. it's intimate, ambient, the staff are fab and the patio is kickin'.
but i may be biased. *ponder* nope. Mikey's is the bomb.

hey! once you move into the building, what say you about hosting a wee little block party / soiree? i smell "housewarming"...!

I've never been to Mikey's, but I think people would need parking & such. I guess the benefit of having something at WyldWood is that it's easily accessible by transit....C Train to Route 3 which runs like every 5 minutes.

POF'ers at my place eh, lol, I just PAID the damage deposit ;-). I do remember BackCountry mentioning something about him having a summer BBQ....I think he has a yard.

Or, a better idea might be to block off the entire street. We'll sneak over to the new condo site and steal the "road closed signs"

BTW...Book Addict has a dog. I know it's a no pets thing, but would the landlord get pissed over having a dog in the building for a weekend ?

Mikey's: we must change that. pronto. maybe when your little e-town princess comes for a visit..?

BBQ: if BackCountry has a BackYard, i say we sneak in and host a wee gig on his behalf. wouldn't that be fun and mischievous...?

Street Party: that sounds even more fun and mischievous. i'm in!

Dog: hmmm. not sure about that one. i've asked about having a friend's dog over for the day, etc before, and that hasn't been a problem. but a weekend..... *bites lip* i think you'd have to ask them; i really couldn't (shouldn't) say.

The great part about BackCountry is he can supply the liquor...we'll just storm the store & make off with the goods while you distract him. ;-).

{quote]Mikey's: we must change that. pronto. maybe when your little e-town princess comes for a visit..?

Yeah, she's game on going as she posted above. Would have to be like a Friday or Saturday night tho, only I'm insane enough to drive to Edmonton for the evening ;-).

Someone mentioned the Ironwood...that might make a good place for an event. The food's actually pretty kick ass there, there is parking & it's easily accessible for anyone driving. It's also big enough you can move tables around.

Well I don't live on the block but you are posting on my thread! LMAO

I wanna come to your neighbourhood party.
Never been to Wyldwood. Mikeys is pretty kick ass. Ironwood is good, but I didn't think it was that big, (neither is Mikeys) - and is there transit? Does Wyldwood have live music? When do you think BackCountry will have a backyard party?

I am ready for the summer parties, backyard, patio, whatever!!

ps, I have a dog, and a backyard if required I would accomodate, probably not as close for 'visiting' as Backcountry.

wyldwood is big; they do have live gigs, but not sure how often. ironwood is also a good size; it's bigger than mikey's, more intimate than wyldwood. i, of course, lean towards mikey's b/c the music tends to be better (admittedly, many of the musicians that play there are friends of mine. a lot of the regulars from A Bar Named Sue have also started to congregate there. so maybe i'm biased. *ponders* nope. the music is all superfly.) Mikey's also has a patio and pool (the big perk for me). transit is a little sketchy, admittedly--wyldwood is definitely more easily accessible.

re: BackCountry's BackYard Bash....
well, i think we'd have to inform him first that he's hosting a shindig. (lol)

Lilac Festival is fast approaching. this would be a great chance to connect and hang out; perhaps have drinks after the day winds down...

did you go to mikey's last night?
a couple of my GF's decided to go last minute and wanted me to tag along. it was verrrry tempting...but i needed to try and catch up on my sleep.
was it fabulous?

a few kickin' gigs coming up this week:

Thursday - Ghostkeeper at the Marquee (awesome little indie band; these guys are gaining quite a huge following, and it's mostly word-of-mouth PR. definitely a "must see".)
Trina Nestibo is also hosting the jam at Mikey's Thurs night; she's a talented little power-house; acoustic folk artist that also plays the accordian and various other improvised percussion (if you're into that sort of thing).

Saturday - Blues jam at Mikey's from 3 to 7 (awesome), and one of my fave local acts, Smokin 45's (honky-tonk / rockabilly), are at the Palomino Saturday night.

If you like blues, you might be interested in Beat Niq if you haven't already gone.

When I went to Beat Niq, it was jazz?? I liked it there. I plan on going again.

Castaline, I'd love to go to this some Monday. Do you plan on doing this again?

Hi Mon Cherie, \
Yes, my intent is to go on as many Mondays as I am able.
I am a big Steve Pineo fan, and he hosts the MOnday blues.
Tuesdays is Tim Williams, who I also like, so wouldn't mind switching it up once in awhile if anyone was interested.

I will be at Mikey's on Monday the 19 (work schedule permitting)
