Ghetto locations in the bay area to stay away from...

In order to help the many visitors that either visit or temporarily work in the bay area, let us compile a list of neighborhoods in the bay area to stay away from...

1) Oakland - downtown
2) San Jose - South of San Fernando, and East of 4th St.
3) San Francisco - Tenderloin (although not sure of the locality, I know it's around Suite 181 on 181 Eddy St.)

Any others? Intersections appreciated!

East Palo Alto: People will try to steal your tires with you SITTING IN THE CAR...(I'm not kidding...)
Pittsburgh: These hombres make Oakland thugs look like Boy Scouts

Stilll.... I must add...

Afew years ago, I played on a softball team in Downtown Oakland with some black guys who were ATF agents...some were ex-pro athletes... and almost all of them had been from big cities east of the Mississippi... and they told me that Oakland was nothing...NOTHING...crimewise... compared to Chicago, NYC, St. Louis, Detroit or anyplace like that.
I believe them.
Generally, you can usually walk anyplace around here without being attacked. I don't think you can say that about parts of Los Angeles anymore. If you drive into the wrong part of town, you're FU.

Don't think there is an area on the planet where someone should be told to completely stay away.

I think places to be more cautious are more appropriate.

I had gone to Oakland a good 10 years or more ago to meet up with and hang out with and acquaintance of mine. I got lost that night, this was when cell phones where very new and I kept stopping at phone booth after phone booth for a couple hours where the phones had been literally ripped off the booth. Anyway long story short I finally got to my acquaintances dwelling and made a really good friend.

In the end I have made some of my best of friends in the worst of areas.

The diamond in the rough is always worth finding in my book.

^ I strongly agree.... because many people who have to live around that crap are the last people who would engage in it. They know how criminal behavior screws up a whole living area and they don't want to be a part of it.

find an area that is over 90 percent caucasian and make a note to be very wary of bigots and skinheads. do not travel there after 5 pm, prime time for the lynchings. if you do go, be sure to not wear anything of ethnic origin. make sure to stay out of the sun for at least two weeks before visiting, so that you do not tan and confuse the local residents. you may also want to carry tear gas for safety purposes, allowing you sufficient time to RUN QUICKLY! remember, no drugs, but by all means visit the local hick bar open for breakfast and drink yourself silly to more aptly blend in. if you have a registered gun, you may also wish to go hunting for entertainment.

sorry, but could not resist. and please stay out of my hometown, nyc. i wouldn't want you to get hurt.

Having lived in San Jose, the peninsula and the inner and outer East Bay, and having spent the weekend looking at houses in the East Bay for my younger sibling, I can "safely" say that in some areas it's almost a block-by-block determination. Moreover, some areas that were quite nice a year ago now have so many empty homes that it doesn't feel safe at night or during the day when everyone is at work.

It's safe to assume that there are ghetto areas in pretty much every neighborhood. It falls to your perception and or interpretation of what "ghetto" is, thus you should define it first. It's possible people growing up in the identified areas may not see it the same.

Just some healthy FOOD FOR THOUGHT on this subject.

If you're going to list areas to stay away from then you should list the places the ****ing treehuggers who have ruined this State live.. so that pretty much kills all tourism for the entire bay area....

I was born and raised in East San Jose (King and Tully area) and I often hear people say that it's ghetto and they won't go down there at night or during ethnic celebrations or whatever. Personally, I don't find anything scary about it, it's all about how your present yourself and whether or not you're an ass.
Since leaving San Jose, i've willingly and without fear walked through "ghettos" in Oakland, Stockton, San Fransisco, Salinas, Baltimore, D.C., Imperial Beach (little town between San Diego and Mexico), San Diego, Singapore and Hong Kong. No one has ever hassled me and I've never had any problems.

like I said, don't be an ass and you'll probably be safe, acting like you're better than anyone in their home is a surefire way to invite trouble.

just my $0.02...

Avoid Sesame Street. I hear that gold teeth and 40 oz. bottles of 1% milk are becoming quite rampant among the disadvantaged muppet population there.

Today's car-jacking was brought to you by the number 5, and the letter Q.

I think Richmond has the highest murder rate in the state. Higher than Oakland.

San Jose is actually pretty safe even in the worst areas compared to other cities. According to the Morgan Quinto website, San Jose is still the safest city in America over 500,000 in population while Richmond ranks 8th most dangerous in the US (and MOST dangerous in California) for cities between 50,000 and 499,999. It is also the most dangerous city in California overall at 12th in the nation for cities of all sizes. San Bernardino and Compton in Southern California are less dangerous than Richmond. Note that I am talking about the City of Richmond between Berkeley and San Pablo in Contra Costa county, not the Richmond district of San Francisco.
