| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/3/2008 4:51:56 AM | They say that ignorance is bliss, but im not sure that it is. Does knowing all make you happier? more content? or does it only add to your woes? Its allso been said that what you dont know wont harm you. really? Ive allso heard it be said, for example, that those with downs syndrom are happier than the average person. But is that really true? what do you think? gc | |

Ive heard it be said, for example, that those with downs syndrom are happier than the average person. When we lost my Mum, my Nephew with Downs cried terribly along with the rest of us but he accepted very quickly that Nanny had gone to a wonderful place called heaven. When the other kids were trying to eat dinner but kept crying the next day he said quite succinctly "Will you shut up you Twats i'm trying to eat my dinner" (Yes he did say Twats, got that word from school). But every now and then he will want to see my Mum and want to ring her up and tell her something and then he remembers and says things like "Oh i can't Nanny is in heaven" and will cry a little bit.
The first time i took him to my Dads after Mum had passed he ran from room to room looking for her calling "Nanny come out i am here to see you!!" and then he looked at my Dad who was crying and said "Come on Grandad, Nannys in heaven lets go for a Beer" which made us all laugh whilst very choked up at the same time.
We all said we would have loved to have had Matthew's simple take on life when we were in such pain with the loss.
Ignorance can be bliss at times i guess

What you dont know cannot hurt you
Ah, but when you find out (and worse still, find out that others knew before you) you feel like a fool. Surely that hurts? Well, it does me.

'They' also say "The truth will always out", and when it does, it hurts like hell and one feels foolish for that blissful ignorance!
|
| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/3/2008 5:16:28 AM | Think it depends on the subject matter...
Honesty usually the best policy tho' & can't think of many things I'd be happy with being kept in the dark about.
|
| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/3/2008 5:17:31 AM | But with knowledge, surely, your more able to deal with more of the things that life throws at you? does that knowledge and maturity not allow you to proccess bad experiences easier? im not convinced yet that ignorance is bliss. be it in maturity terms, or experience terms,or intelligence terms. | |
|
| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/3/2008 7:45:53 AM | I don't feel that ignorance is bliss, like Fierce Fish said, lots of unhappy ignorant people around as well.
Depends what is meant by 'ignorance' really. Total lack of (or only partial knowledge of) any situation does not necessarily allow peoples' minds to rest easy, or to make their existence blissful.

Exactly ! Proves the point. You were blissful whilst unaware. The hurt only came when you were no longer unaware.
So, YES ignorence is bliss
.......but with each let down and knock, you become more wary of people, surely?
Therefore ignorance is NOT bliss.
Honesty usually the best policy tho' & can't think of many things I'd be happy with being kept in the dark about.
I'm in total agreement with you. Honesty is usually the best policy.

| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/4/2008 6:34:30 AM | Heres something that puzzles me.How do you know if your a happy person compared to other people or not? Ive only known how it is to be me! on topic: Isnt a problem only a problem once you have been aware of it? Its there, but is it really a problem if your not smart enough to see it? I could have lived forever not knowing i had terrible hallitosis, until it was gracefully pointed out to me at madam fifi's the last time i popped in. ps. I knew i had seen showl somewhere before!!

Anybody who have half a brain would have a pretty good idea one way or the other wether they are happier than other people.

| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/4/2008 3:29:40 PM | To each his sufferings: all are men, Condemned alike to groan; The tender for another's pain, The unfeeling for his own. Yet ah! why should they know their fate? Since sorrow never comes too late, And happiness too swiftly flies. Thought would destroy their paradise. No more; where ignorance is bliss, 'Tis folly to be wise.
The words are from Thomas Gray's "Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College". The youth he sees within and without the institution have no knowledge of the sorrows, the bitterness of failed ambition, the anger, the pain of unrequited love, the agonies of death that are to come. They are ignorant of their future and that to Gray was the bliss - "schooldays are the happiest days of your life" in rather more words and a lot more poetically.
If we knew all the sorrow and heartache that was to come our way, why then, surely, it would be true folly to be wise before the event.
Would we begin anything - a job, a relationship, a parenthood - if we knew, at the start of the venture, of the sorrow to come? Then surely, ignorance is bliss.

| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/4/2008 4:16:57 PM | I prefer to know the truth.
Who knows what skeletons people have in their cupboards.
I used to work with a bloke for 5 years who turned out to have been a hit man !!! I quite often wound him up................ If only I had known !
|
| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/4/2008 5:05:28 PM | well, if the world was going to end in 5 minutes I'd want to know so I could do things, actually you better make that 10 minutes because I'd want to do it more than twice, then again, 20 minutes so I can have a cigarette after. Or better still half an hour so I can pay off all my credit cards as well.
I used to go out with a girl which was a fantastic relationship, I was the happiest I had ever been, we would talk, laugh, sex was great absolutely no problems whatsoever. I was in bliss.
Then I found out she was actually a man, which I should have realised because women don't have todgers. So yes ignorance is bliss.
|
| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 5/4/2008 9:12:50 PM | My mum won't watch the news or read papers because she'd rather 'ignore' the state of the world than have to worry about it. She also chooses to ignore the cycle of abuse that has happened within my family for generations, she chooses to ignore her sister abusing me when I was 6, and the man she made me call 'dad'. Ignorance isnt bliss because now my daughter will never have her grandmother or know many of her family as I choose not to ignore and make those sacrifices in order to protect her. Then again....she does follow an organised religion so it sort of makes sense.
Ignorance is blisss or so they say hoping that it will all go away Close your ears put on your blinkers Ignorance is bliss... ...but not for the thinkers.

Ignorance is bliss- is it?
I'd rather be a wise man living in a slum Than be a happy man, Living in a small mind, both ignorant and dumb

But surely a childs problems are just as real, intense and disterbing to them at that time as an adults is to them? A problem is a problem until its resolved or delt with, isnt it? Just becouse an adult can deal with more complex problems doesn't mean that they are any more taxing than what a childs problem is to them. I'snt it? what?

| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 4/17/2009 5:26:03 AM | i don't know if it is really, how many times have you found something out and wished you had known earlier, countermanded by not knowing something and wished you had never heard.
There is some on here who should be blissfully happy if it were, but going by their posts they are sad gits

Blimey! Talk about timing! On Monday I was told (I wasn't given an option as it just blurted out) something about someone that I wish I hadn't heard/been told, it's now a burden that I'll have to carry. Why do people think they can tell us about stuff that is neither their or our business?
It is my belief that ignorance can sometimes be bliss...

| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 4/17/2009 5:36:54 AM | Andy - why would you bother paying off your credit cards when the world was about to end?
Ignorance would only be bliss for as long as you were ignorant, you always feel like a complete idiot once enlightened!
|
| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 4/17/2009 6:33:55 AM | Ignorance is only bliss until you're woken up.
If you want to live in your own little bubble, unwilling to see further than the end of your nose, then don't complain when something/someone comes along and pops that bubble. If the whole world was ignorant, we'd be in a right old mess.

| Ignorance is bliss- is it? Posted: 4/17/2009 7:57:56 AM | I have to agree with 'Aitch Em'. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, only sometimes tho.
It all depends on the situation. I wouldn't want to be ignorant about things that concern my safety etc but at times would be blissfully happy not to be burdened with other peoples problems.
Sometimes people off load their burdens on you without giving regard to the fact they have just involved you. Would you want to know that your best friends husband was cheating on her only to then have to decide, do you tell them, do you pretend ignorance. Much better to have never known in the first place.
I have never been in the above situation but have been in a situation where I wish I did not know the truth and being told the truth, belatedly, has caused me anguish.
