""Human Trafficking brought that issue up to the front burner. It's a terrible reality and it happens all over the world. The sad part is (your right OP) that it's supported by male consumers/clients who know exactly what they're doing when they go on those package tours and have sex with these very young girls.""

This was a poster's view from a thread that I started and has now become too narrow to continue. (How important is the 2005 film "Human Trafficking? )

So If anyone has a movie/documentary to suggest and why,,,please do so.

thanks

Hitch,,,2005,,,Andy Tennant Dir/Will Smith

Imo, it is one of the few crossover flics that successfully combines comedy and relationship.

Comedy is about "character" and "place",,,think "Bowfinger" or "The Three Stooges",,,while drama is about relationship,,,,that is,,,every scene between woman and man is subliminally about "atraction" and "sex".

I would recommend Koyaanisqatsi, Noqoyqatsi ( and there is another in the Qatsi trilogy) or Baraka by director Ron Fricke.
These films are beautiful with striking and provocative cinematography clashing nature with technology. The state of our world from the perspective of these films makes you walk away and go, "hmmmmmmm" both in a positive way and with a somewhat discouraged outlook on where we will go as a species.
I find the imagery very powerful.

The Corporation outstanding film on what is really going on. How The Corporation have no loyalty to the country, abusing workers, brainwashing children at very young age. You should see it real eye opener the part about the Physiologist helping to write ads to get children to beg their parents was worth watching.

Mind Your Own Business very good at showing the truth behind Greenpeace and saving the world. People begging for jobs and Greenpeace stopping the mining operation. Funny part they interview one of Greenies he is building a new house just bought a big sailboat but he didn't want the fishermen to get jobs at the mine. Those people are so quaint and nice if they get jobs soon they will have TV and radio and the town will be ruined. Jobs would mean running water, a real sewer system and health care but the rich greenies stop the mine. You got to see it. What a hypocrite?

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media

The documentary deals with some of the issues raised in the book Manufacturing Consent, which was written by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman. It exposes how news filtering and other media biases are used to influence and manipulate public opinion. The basic theme, which is well established in both the book and film, is that while totalitarian states use force to control their populations, Western democratic states use propaganda to the same end, and at least as effectively. It's well worth watching for anybody who has an interest in free speech, freedom, and truth.

Super Size Me.

It will show you how bad fast food is for you. It's poison, plain and simple. Of course this guy did go to extremes by eating every breakfast, lunch, and dinner from McD's. But there is no doubt that the food is pure poison.

Here you are Uncle Maxx! Aloha!

I shared this on your earlier posting; it's Born into Brothels.

It's a documentary done by an American, Zana Briski; which won an Academy Award for for Best Documentary.

Her story is of the vivid, daily lives of children who are born into the brothels of Calcutta. She gave a group of them cameras to take pictures with. It's amazing story of how this changed their lives. She worked towards getting them into schools to be educated.

Why do I like this one so much? It made me aware of something I had no idea even existed. She demonstrates the power of one...what one person can do to affect change. It's an inspiring story that made me ask myself some hard questions. To start with, 'why am I sitting on my a$$' and 'what is it that I can do to make a difference?'

It's a free download for those who would like to watch it @ freedocumentaries.org

Depends on what you are into, but a few that I like:

1. The Bucket List: I'm not a Nicholson fan, do enjoy Freeman. Thought most of the movie was ho-hum, but thought the ending made the movie.

2. The Great Raid: About the rescue of POWs in the Philippines at the end of WWII. Good story and acting.

3. Timewatch's Murder in Rome: Documentary/Re-enactment about a case in which Cicero is the defense advocate/attorney.

4. Sherlock Holmes The True Story of Dr. Joseph Bell: Interesting to learn about the man that Conan Doyle based his famous detective after. I did get tired of the modern CSI stuff they threw in about how they can do it now, but the story of Dr. Bell is interesting to me.

5. White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: The documentary is from the view of some of the survivors and the horror they saw.

Someone already mentioned "Supersize Me",I thought this one did a great job of showing how bad fast food is for us.

"A Beautiful Mind" is a story about a schizophrenic man.The first half of the movie is through his eyes,it shows how much everyone like him,how smart he is,he's a secret agent with worldly friends and admired by everyone. The second part shows how everyone else sees him, confused, imaginary friends, making fun of him, etc.I have a friend with a schizophrenic son,and he says its a fair portrayal of what these people experience.

I saw a documentary about 10 years ago about the relationship of animals (food, religion, medical research)in other countries and cultures. It was absolutely disgusting, I was outraged as any animal lover would be.I wish I could remember the name,I think it was a Nova episode,or that series David Attenburough made.

Grizzly Man directed by the great Werner Herzog, just a great character study of a man who identified more with bears than humans and shows how messed up an environmentalist can get.

The Story of Stuff.... it's only 26 minutes long.

It will give a clear understanding of pollution, and make you think twice about our attitudes towards materialism and consumerism.

who killed the electric car - its interesting, more than relevant, especially when considering the current presidential debates that are going on right now

jesus camp - definitely interesting. it's about the born again christians' insanity. one part that i found more than amusing was a home schooled child, stating that global warming is nothing more than a political debate, and doesn't really exist. while i personally couldn't care less about pollution, global warming, or anything environment related, it's sad to see kids being brainwashed into believing things that aren't true. i do believe global warming does exist, i just choose not to care because i'll be dead before anything major happens.....and nothing changed now will impact my own life, so its really a moot point from that perspective.

Mmmmmm, some excellent suggestions so far.
Try "Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash"
Obviously about peak oil, with some conspiracy theory thrown in for good measure, but some of the scenes of the messes we have left behind in sucking oil out of the earth........staggering. Or the wars associated with control of oil resources....makes me want to live out in the bushes with a twig for a toothbrush.

"The Exodus Decoded" was show aired on history channel hosted by Investigative Journalist...it shows great archeological evidence of events from the book of Exodus in the Bible. In the show it shows the Egyptian seal of Joseph that was found in archeological dig in Eqypt. This seal of a Pharoah had Hebrew writing on it...it had the name of Joseph's father on it in Hebrew....very interesting artifact....I suppose this show is documentary...about 2 hours long can't recall for sure...very interesting...also shows pictures of Mount Sinai

"Dealing Dogs"
This kid goes undercover at a kennel in Texas that buys dogs to resell for reasearch. The dogs aren't kept in humane conditions and can often times even be someone's pet. They show a guy selling a dog that was found running loose only hours prior that the guy was trying to sell off. The guy in it is vegan/vegetarian and kind of a peta person, but the investigation was legit. I'm not against animal research [to a degree] but I am against over crowded kennels and inhuman living conditions especially when the man running the facility is totally loaded. They totally end up shutting the place down which is pretty cool.

EXPELLED:no intelligence allowed.

A movie about how several highly educated professors and other experts in the fields of science are being fired or otherwise persecuted for the very mention of intelligent design in the universe. It's not a movie promoting religion or attacking evolution or atheism, indeed many of the persecuted scientists are evolutionists or atheists. It's a movie promoting the idea of open debate on the subject of there being some form of intelligence involved in the creation of the universe. It's a great movie for anyone concerned about truth and open debate in science and education.

Here's another one I just watched last night:

Invisible Children
It's a survival story about the children on N. Uganda who are being abducted by rebels to fight. It was a first documentary produced by some college students from California; a very unexpected story that they stumbled upon while in Africa. It's led to the creation of their own foundation to support these children and families by teaching them trades, financing skills, education, etc.
Just a wonderful outcome of a socially horrific situation.

It can be seen for free on www.freedocumentaries.com

The National Geographic documentary Elephant Rage is very interesting.
And it teaches us a lot about ourselves in comparison.

Understanding animal behaviour has a way of teaching us more about why we behave the way we do, as well as culturing a deeper respect for animals in general.
I have been told I am a two-legged beside whom Coyote walks. XD

I can't believe this thread isn't a zillion pages long.

In any case my recommendation: "Sisters In Law." Amazing doc about two sisters, a judge and a state prosecutor, in Cameroon. Basically spousal abuse cases, and most cases of abuse in general are never prosecuted there and it follows the sisters through some cases of spousal and child abuse as they actually bring the perpetrators to justice. I'm always wary of docs that are going to make me really despair about the world because I often feel overwhelmed by them. Despite the subject matter the film is inspiring and often freaking hilarious. Amazing, amazing doc.
