Help!!!

Am I Asian or am I American???

I am going through an identity crisis again so I'm seeking a thrid opinion!

I'm obviously Asian in ethnicity but I was born and brought up here in a very American culture- I don't even speak the language of origin, etc. Therefore, I'm having a hard time deciding who I should affiliate myself with more particularly in the dating world. I mean, the Asian guys I've dated always seemed so elusive to me for one thing...

If you were born here and you speak English you are an American.

This hyphenated stuff is one of the major problems in America.

You are not an Asian-American, you are not an American-Asian.

You are an American and at some point your ancestors came from somewhere else.

A hint, a some point everyones ancestors came from someplace else.

Even if it was 300,000 years ago.

Hope this helps.

Well on your passport you would be known as an American.

If you would describe yourself to someone who has never seen your photo, how would you describe yourself?

For example: ... I was born in Austria, but have been in Australia for longer than I was in Austria, also I am a naturalized Australian, so on my passport I AM Australian and I describe myself as an Australian, I just happen to be born in Austria and I was also influenced by my parents by the Austrian culture. LOL confusing huh! Am i a Austrian-Australian? silly this hyphenating.

There's a term for it. Banana. Yellow on the outside but white on the inside.

In Canada there's an entire generation of people like yourself growing up. In Vancouver or Toronto you'll run into thousands. (The exodus from HK in the 70's 80's and 90's created this group.)

However, in Toronto, many of them do speak some Cantonese or Manderin, and can read and write some Chinese ideographs. Saturday schooling. Of course the same was true of the previous waves of immigrants (Polish, Italian).

I would suggest you go out with those people whom you find attractive and find you attractive. Unless your parents have a strong preference for you marrying someone of your own ethnicity, it shouldn't be a problem.

I think the op is confusing herself. American is not an ethnicity, but a nationality. Asian generally is an racial classification that really is misleading and confusing depending where you live.

Do you think all Asians have the same culture? Do you think they speak the same language? I would not put much thought into what to classify yourself.

Maybe it should be an ethnicity?

Would it be so bad if people were encouraged to be proud to say "I am an American?"

I think it is a lot of fascism-phobia that keeps people from trying to identify by nationality. That and an administration that says it is "un-American" to disagree.

Personally though, I think it would speak volumes of collective character for people to be able to disagree (respectfully) but still identify and get along with each other.

America is supposed to be a melting pot? Why isn't anyone stirring?

As to the OP: I recommend unfixating on the Asian or American thing. Just go about your life and if you see a man that attracts you, get to know him and see if you can start something. If he makes you happy, does it matter if he is Asian, American, or something else?

Ethnicity is just that... ancestry, skin color, whatever it really is. You're still American no matter what your ethnicity is. Nationality is just where you are from. You can easily be an Asian in ethnicity but German in nationality.

If you're worried about this for dating other people, if you don't have a problem with the people, why bother limiting yourself?

Hmmm, interesting topic. Now, I am Canadian. Born and bred, and very proud of it.

But when asked what my ethnicity is, I check Caucasian. The former poster is correct in saying your birth place is your nationality, not your ethnicity.

Date whomever you're attracted to OP. I don't assume that I have to date only Caucasian men, that would be boring. I judge each individual on their own merits, not by their race OR nationality.

I think you should just keep your options open and date people you have things in common with, regardless whether they are asian or american.

Therefore, I'm having a hard time deciding who I should affiliate myself with more particularly in the dating world.

Why do you feel like you need to affiliate yourself to a particular group?

I mean, the Asian guys I've dated always seemed so elusive to me for one thing...

Not sure I understand what that means....

Don't worry so much about labels. You are an American by birth, of Asian heritage. Be proud of both.

In the meantime, date whoever the hell you feel like, and again, don't worry about labels. I only date within my race. Since I'm human, that limits me to other humans, although some of those green broads that Captain Kirk hooked up with were pretty hot!

OP: At 32 yrs of age, I would have thought you would know how to "identify" yourself. As an Asian American would be my thought.

In terms of dating, you date whomever captures your interest. Regardless if they are Asian or American. Ethnicity is not an issue with me as long as there is an attraction present.

Good luck!

Who cares? Date whoever you want who wants to date you! :)

Why overcomplicate the whole thing?

Affiliate yourself with guys you find attractive and vice versa.

I mean, the Asian guys I've dated always seemed so elusive to me for one thing...
And why is that?

If you were born here, you are an American. I have this issue, as I am of Dutch and Indonesian decent, but was born here.

I identify myself as an American of mixed decent. As far as who you wish to associate yourself with. Associate with whom ever you wish too.

I think that American of Mixed Decent should be enough.

Asian, American, Mexican, Italian, or any other is simply a "label". It shouldn't define you as a person. You are who you are. You have no control over your heritage, but what you do have control over, is your attitude about your heritage. Date a fella that you feel comfortable with and he feels comfortable with you. At the end of the day, you should see yourself as a human being first, a woman second.
