Daytona Beach ... DullsVille USA???
Posted: 5/5/2008 1:38:30 PM
I know there are people on POF in and around the Daytona Beach (Volusia) area. Yet this seems to be so dead out here! I understand Orlando, Tampa, Miami and so on ... But come on people ... There has to be some life in this area? Have I missed the boat?

I think having relocated here from Chicago, I guess I'm use to a little more "Action" or "Culture" ... But Daytona use to be a FUN PLACE!

So I am starting this discussion just to see if we have people in the area ... and to see if they are interested in the area

I lived there when I first moved to Florida. It used to be a great place. But, that was before they stopped beach driving, and turning the hotels into condos. I've heard it's gone downhill.
Anyway, I've talked to some women from Daytona, Ormond, Port Orange. They're around you.
Be glad you don't live here. The west coast of Florida... nothing.

Jacksonville is not much better. Lot of restaurants. A few clubs (very generic ones) , but not a lot of substance....everything so spread out that you spend a fortune to drive around this city.

See what I mean? I have had 50 people hit this yet only 3 replies and NON live in or around Daytona!

Liv'n in Florida is like liv'n in a 3rd world nation! BORING!!! Nice place to visit, great weather, but taxes, entertainment, restuarants, night life, NEWSPAPERS (how lame am I to bring up Newspapers!) ... Seems like Florida just hasn't grown with the rest of the nation. Seems like Daytona and many other towns in Florida have gone backwards instead of progressing forwards.

Don't get me wrong, I work on the beach, I work as a Realtor, I am a partner in a Lawn Service company, and I'm about to open a Dealership (if the zoning board would allow it on a major street!!!) I have a great tan, I meet many great people, but it is ... ITS DULL! Oh yeah ... Why does everything shut down between 8:30 and 9pm???? Some of us don't fall asleep before 7!

Hehehehehehehehehe ......... there's soooooooooooooooooooooooo much to do in Florida. Get involved in your community. I moved here from New York in 1990 and in the beginning I had the same attitude you do. I found by getting myself involved, at times I find there is just not enough time in a day. Pick up the week-ender in your local newspaper or any weekly or daily newspaper and I guarantee you will find plenty to do. Don't expect the excitement to come to you, go out and "JUST DO IT

I agree ... There is LOTS to do in Florida! But thats not what this is about ... See I said Daytona Beach is "DULLSVILLE" ... Now if I had tons of money and gas wasn't $4.00 a gallon I guess I could cruise to Orlando everyday or Miami or any other major city in Florida where ... YES there are things to do.

But I get you point. I've decided to to join some community events ... Lets see I'm involved with needlepoint, ummmm oh yeah, my friends and I now compare ailments! LOL ... Trust me, this is boring!

I'm use to going to real restuarants (ones that stay open past 8:30pm and serve GOOD FOOD?) Nightclubs not crowed with drug addicts, safe to walk the streets, sports, shopping, Daytona ... Blows!

I felt the same way a while back, then found a social group that does tons of different things. Made some great friends, and a couple people even found BF / GFs there. We do everything from Daytona Cubs baseball game gatherings, to restaurants, picnics, geocaching, beach days, bike rides, concerts, cruises, wine tasting, bowling, camping, game nights (bunko/poker etc.)...it's endless, and there are typically 2 to 3, sometimes 4 events every WEEK of the month. The age range is 25 and up, but the majority are 32-52, and most events are in eastern Volusia County, though there
are some in the Deltona area and such as well.

I won't post the link in deference to POF, but anyone interested can message me if interested. Just not sure how the moderators would feel about it here.

Daytona is DullsVille because it is run by a bunch of blue noses. Everything must be done by a family consisting of Mom Dad and 2.3 children (1female and 1male preferred)((not sure what the .3 is supposed to be)). Tourists may bring the kids to the beach until the shadows from the condos overcast the beach. Then they must go to the hotel room and may come out to dine or go to the little nic-nak shops. Locals must work 60 plus hours at low paying jobs to help the blue noses support the high rollers that profit from the tourists. Never under any circumstances mention adult activities. You will be branded a pervert and one that must be watched at all times so your bad influence doesn't spread. I know there is someplace in the area that the bad apples meet and give some sort of secrete sign as to identify each other. Just be careful as big brother will try to infiltrate and shut this sort of thing down.

LMFAO ... Well, I'm not sure about all that! Mainly because up until this year Daytona Beach has not used ANY of it's Tourist and Convention monies to attract tourist! In fact, for the past couple years they have successfully driven away the Bikers, the Spring Breakers and the Family vacationers!!!

See "The Powers That Be" felt that they could create an "UPSCALE" Daytona Beach if the got rid of all tourist ... Problem is that TOURIST keep the town alive, NOT Property Taxes because if you don't have business (restuarants, shops, night clubs ect...) property owners, mostly second home owners have no place to spend their money and enjoy themselves. So by driving away tourism, business fades away, drugs come in, properties taxes are too high for the ameneties available, properties go into foreclosure, city cannot operate within it's budget!

So guess whats happening this year???? Yep ... Daytona is ADVERTISING!!!!!!!!!

(Just ignor the billboard on International Speedway Blvd which advertises COCOA BEACH!!!!) Idiots!

Fort Lauderdale did the same thing about 15 years ago.
By eliminating tourism, in particular Spring Break, they eliminated a HUGE source of revenue.
The aftermath is a more subdued "strip" with high priced cafes, bars and restraunts rather than the Tshirt, tatoo, and knick-knack shops.

Still, Daytona has the most awesome beach and surf in Florida! If you get tired of THAT, it's time to consider relocating.

I think there is plenty to do in this area. It all depends on what you wish to do but I for one am active doing things all the time.
I go to the Rockin Ranch for dance lessons on Tuesdays they have swing or nightclub two stepping, on Thrursdays there is Latin dancing and lessons. There is the Jammin night at Bank n Blues on Wednesday evenings. Also there are plenty of restaurants that have live music during the week and weekend. Also the Bandshell has live music on Sat and sometimes Sunday eves. The Cubs games are also fun. There are numerous events at the Ocean Center. And lets not forget all the Art shows and galleries we have during the year. Plus least we forget the BEACH. There are all kinds of events all around us. As far as restaurants we have many ............have you looked in the Yellow Pages lately?
I don't know about you but I find fun no matter where I go or what I do.
So just get out there and have fun no matter what you do JUST DO IT!

Hello,
I would like to comment on Daytona being dullsville. Yes, it is. I am a Daytona native, and if you don't have a fairly decent job, and like the beach, well there isn't much there. I don't think there is a lot to do there either. I don't care for the beach. It is not like it is booming with jobs either. That was my main reason why I moved to the Orlando area. I lived in Deland for 10 years. But Volusia County is a bit depressed job wise now.I am living in the Orlando area and now call this home, as I have been here 18 years. There is plenty to do here in Orlando. Plus it is booming with jobs, there are so many here. Central FL is the hub, over here, of jobs, and constant growth. A lot of nice restuaurants, fun things like universal, a lot of movies, theather, and so many other activities. For beach goes we have Coaco, which is only about 40 miles from Orlando, as opposed to Daytona which is 60. With the price of gas, every mile saved is a good thing. Honestly, I will never move back to Daytona. I am spoiled with Orlando. So that is what I feel about Daytona. Dullsville.
