So who's into Americana?

real songs, real expolirations, and real playing?

Yes I know that there are a lot of other 'real' acts around, but few have a connection to time and place like heartfelt songwriting and poetic folk musicianship tends to bring.

I'm not entirely a Deadhead, but I don't see a lot of love for them around outside of their circles.

Any pretty mamas and big papas rollin' around trying to connect?

I'm way into Americana, though I don't think I would have included the Dead in that genre. And Dylan and the Band, though undeniably great, are kind of old school Americana; there's some really great new music out there.

Have you heard Jackie Greene? If you haven't, check him out. I also recently discovered Neko Case, and based on what I've heard, I definitely think she's worth a listen, too.

Wilco's Being There is one of my all time favorite albums.

I am, I just recently saw Bob Weir and Ratdog at The Beacon Theater in NY. Two nights. April 3rd and 5th. (couldn't go Fri had to work, gotta do that sometimes). They were absolutely awesome, truly enjoyable show! Going in August to see the Allman Bros and Ratdog again the 23rd. I have 8 tickets. So it should be a fun filled jammin time. I was supposed to go back to the Beacon on May12th, my birthday to see the Allmans, but it was cancelled due to Greg being ill. That was a bummer. I hope you have a fun jammin day!

Actually, the term "Americana," I think refers to alternative/non-mainstream country music with a little bit of folky/bluesy sound mixed in like Wilco, Son Volt, John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, Ryan Adams, the Jayhawks, Lucinda Williams, etc.

It's a newish term--maybe from the past fifteen years.

I've to say, this is a great forum here! Some of the bands I've seen here like Hendrix, Cream, The Who, The Doors, Steppenwolf etc. are all great and these groups were and in some cases still are very much pioneers who cast a huge shadow of todays' saturation of American Idol-produced & manufactured garbage. Many of these bands continue to perform and greatly influence the masses to this day. Young people will always seek these legendary bands out and these groups will live forever, much in the same manner as Bach, Chopin, Beethoven and others.

Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm and The Band are CANADIANA
So are Burton Cummings and the Guess Who, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, David Wilcox, and Kim Mitchell.
You can't mention old school bands like the Dead without including Little Feat, The Marshall Tucker Band and The Allman Brothers Band!!

I always loved The Band. Have you ever read Levon Helm's book, "This Wheel's On Fire"?

A great read............very insightful and interesting.

Too bad they don't make music like this anymore. Well maybe they do, you just have to look harder for it.

oh my my, here is a good one, "Americana Music", such a good flavor of music,
some names mentioned here like, jackie greene (with his band or playing with phil and friends), railroad earth, donna the buffalo, how about the likes of larry keel and natural bridge, or toss in some bluegrass flavor like sam bush band, or some americana swamp sounds of one of my favorites, MOFRO, also could include new riders of the purple sage and even david nelson band. as far as levon and his music, he plays at the farm every week with friends like larry campbell (of bob dylan fame and with phil and friends right now), or even jorma and whoever he is playing with, such sweet music..
there is a bunch more, keep this subject going, heck, lets chat about the wonderful music, there isnt enough of it going on...
"when you get confused, just listen to the music play"
cheers folks

FINALLY! I feel like I found my people. A lost tribe! I LOVE the Grateful Dead. And I am a 26 year old girl living in Dallas and I feel like I am the only one. Went to the Wildflower Fest and saw The Guess Who, so entertaining. They just don't make music like that anymore. I've seen Ratdog twice, Phil and Friends twice, The Dead (post Jerry) twice and The Other Ones once. Alas, I was 13 when Jerry died so I never saw the Dead with him. But I still remember the day; I had just gotten in to them...I've seen Bob Dylan a couple times to...so awesome. Any Dallas fans of the Dead need to check out Forgotten Space, they're a Dead cover band...so awesome. Phil and Bobby never tour down here! I saw them when I lived up North. I wish they would come back but they won't...too close to New Orleans...

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out. I love The Band. I went to the Last Waltz in SF like 30 years ago. One of my alltime favorite albums is The Basement Tapes with Dylan.

Love me some Grateful Dead! Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming ...

One of the best concerts, The Dead in Englishtown NJ back in the late 70's. The Dead, along with New Riders and Marshall Tucker Band, great day!

I love just about all the bands/artists mentioned in the thread. How about some Doobie Brothers, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Dave Matthews Band?

Newer Americana bands/artists how about Christopher Jak and Jack Johnson?

And ... I love the new contemporary country artists/bands like Rascal Flatts, Billy Currington, Dierks Bentley. Nothing says Americana like some country!
