| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 12:32:50 PM | Can anyone understand or explain the mentality of the driver who has to sit in lane 2 on a completely empty motorway......................
..................what is it with these drivers.......they enter the motorway or dual carriageway and go straight into lane 2, where they sit....................for the duration of their journey......
..............is it the need to be in the thick of things...........(oi mate the road is empty, stupid nobheads)
...............are the white lines magical ................and keep them on track and stops them wandering around the road............. are the white lines like guide rails........*weeeeeeee lets drive in the middle of them so I don't get lost*...............(for gods sake............move over to the left.................nobhead)...........
Are you a middle lane nobhead..........or do you know anyone who does this............?
Any thoughts on this annoying habit.............
There again....................would you admit it???????????????

It's a pain in the arse when the motorway is busy and the lorry's in lane 1 are all going 60mph and then you get the car drivers sitting in the middle lane doing 59mph and then you get people overtaking in the third lane doing 61mph. That is really dangerous because I have to slow down from 105mph to 61mph in just a few seconds and if i'm on the phone at the same time there's bound to be a crash sooner or later.

I don't see your problem, if the motorway is empty whats the big deal if they are in the middle lane?
The problem is, I have to move out of lane one…into lane two and over into lane three, overtake the nobheads……….then move back in again to lane one………….it upsets my flow and ticks me off……..
As to your other habits…………..not for me to comment on…….
@ 5
It's almost annoying as seeing lines of ........................ for no apparent reason. My apologies if you do genuinely have a stammer
Might have…….you don’t know……(anyway I like them)

Then there is the problem that if you stick in lane 1 you are forever having to switch to lane 2 at a junction to avoid traffic slowing down to turn off or slow moving traffic just joined. However, in the 2 miles of motorway between London and South Wales, with no turn offs, no junctions and no closed lanes, I agree with you, totally!

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 1:50:06 PM | Middle lane hoggers should be banned from motorways full stop. They are dangerous, causing unecessary bunching, making people have to queue up to overtake them and in essence are closing a three lane road down to two. They are the bain of motorway driving in the UK, and just as bad are the idots on a dual carraigeway that queue up in the outside lane to overtake a lorry five miles up the road. Keep to the effing left til you get there for God's sake. Rant over but completely agree with OP. | |

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 1:51:58 PM | I think they do it because they are lazy, plain and simple, they cant be bothered to keep switching lanes. That or its an ego thing, and they dont want everyone overtaking them. It really should be stopped though, it really does show just how many people arnt up to date with the rules of the road. | |

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 2:29:59 PM | You also get some people are terrified of driving in the fast lane and sit behind you in the middle lane until you pull in.
I find hot weather affects people most. I had two incidents yesterday when it was hot of people pulling out of junctions right in front of me. Neither looked first. It seems to affect pedestrians too, some dozy bloke walked right out in front of me without looking.

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 2:39:51 PM | it doesn't matter what lane they are in, I will just overtake/undertake
You have to forgive the people who come from Cornwall though because they don't have any motorways and so it might be the first time they have seen 3 lanes all going in the same direction

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 4:48:26 PM | complete nobheads the lot of them ... I am not given to road rage usually but i will undertake in lane 1 and give them a V sign on the way past ...
.. The really worrying thing is that they have no idea that they are doing anything wrongly , and therefore no idea why the idiot in lane 1 is giving them V signs .
Its about time the police started pulling them over for a lecture ....... oh we dont have any police anymore, do we, only the pseudo police in their noddy cars who do feck all except stand around looking at an accident before closing the motorway completely, just in case .....................

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 4:50:55 PM | Usualy because the first lane is so full of slow sunday drivers, we have to weave in and out to avoid you. It's easier just to bomb down the middle lane, straight to the destination. No fuss.
There is an issue with middle lane hoggers as well as overtaking lane hoggers (they are the worst) who drive slowly. Just, stay in your lane, sit behind them for a while, don't tailgate or join their lane., then overtake them on the wrong side & give them a funny look as you do so..... Nice.

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 5:15:15 PM | I'm sure that these people are probably just scared of driving on the motorway. Or the other drivers on the motorway.
The left hand lane or lane 1 is where most new traffic filters on to the motorway. They will be constantly worried about them, and also having to move to the middle lane to avoid them safely and let them in.
For that same reason they don't go into the right most lane (the fast lane) as they are scared of the nutters who go racing along there at 100mph+
So they simply stay in the middle lane trying to keep out of everyones way and just get to their destination in one piece.
Not sure why it bothers you all so much really. Just pull into the right hand lane and overtake them. Seems simple to me.

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 5:27:29 PM | Oggers
It is a serious offence (1985 road traffic act) to undertake. I was pretty impressed with this thread only one person has refered to a 'fast lane'. Unless under local agreement all lanes have a speed limit of 70mph.
The one that get's me, is when an 'undertaker' causes an accident, as they invariably do.. the OTHER bleedin carriage way slows down so pillocks can have a good stare. Donkeys!

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 6:10:21 PM | Yup, I am a middle lane nob head and I will explain to you why.
If the motorway is empty I travel in the middle lane at a consistant speed of 70-75 mph. Staying at a constant speed in a straight line is a LOT less fuel consuming, and therefore costs me less money, and the environment less death.
If someone wants to overtake me at over 80mph, they can make the ****ing effort to change lanes.
Also, if anyone ever flashes their lights at me to change lanes, I slam my breaks on. It's the rudest ****ing thing in the world.

If the motorway is empty that would also apply to the inside lane as well as the middle lane. One of the the most noticeable things about motorways is that the lanes run parallel to each other.

"But wagons and lorries take up the first lane."
And those that insist in taking up the middle lane, often take up the central reservation, hard shoulder and spaces in Ambulances' Hospitals' or Graveyards.
Ask any Emergency Service worker what opinion is of 'middle lane hogging.'

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 7:10:00 PM | The speed limit has nothing to do with breaking the highway code. There are reasons for using lane one that you have possibly not considered, I will give you one example.
When driving a large Emergency Vehicle I will never use lane 3, the main reason being motorists panic at lights and sirens, if we need to come to a stop we aim to 'fend off' the scene by careful positioning. this can not always be achieved if you forced into the third lane and an incident could be overshoot. Please consider this and change your bad habbit.
Well done, it is laudable you obey the speed limit, but bloody move over theres a love!

| The Mentality of the Middle Lane Hogger.................Please!!!!!!!!! Posted: 5/7/2008 7:17:21 PM | What really gets my goat is the same f@@kers will sit on your offside rear and prevent you moving out when you need to overtake... then sound their f@@king horn if you indicate to pull out rather than pull into the third lane. Worse still are truck drivers (who are (and i mean ALL) the worst drivers on the road) who will pull out on you when you are overtaking without bothering to indicate. F@@kers can't even overtake another vehicle without being flashed in once they are past... completely incompetent.
can i get off my soap box now?
