CAMPING ANYONE?????
Posted: 5/7/2008 8:57:18 PM
OK Folks:
I have had a few fellow fishies tell me they would like me to start a camping trip for the group. Lets use this thread to kick around good suggestions for such a weekend trip. I was thinking we should likely stay somewhere in the Chicagoland vicinity by say an hour or so? I was thinking maybe Friday night to Sunday. Toliets and showers are a must for us ladies........ I know there is a camp ground in Tinley Windy City, but it is way too close to the expressway and super noisy. Anyone have any other suggestions? Indiana might be a bit far for some, and the weekend traffic to get in and out will be tough. Kankakee? Starved Rock? Marseilles? Help me out here folks. Of course we will have to plan it and pray for good weather, though some places like Starved Rock have tiny cabins too, for those afraid of tent campng. As for dates, how about June 6-8? Wanna do families or singles? Mach, Muree, and all my feloow fishie friends who like to camp, I need you wisdom and input here. Thanks, Laurie

After a little bit of searching, I found the following in Kankakee.......

http://www.kankakeesouthkoa.com/

The Kankakee South KOA offers a quiet get-away-from-it-all retreat that's just an hour south of Chicago. Good restaurants, golf courses, canoe trips and Friday night stock car races are nearby. You're just 10 minutes from the Chicago Bears' training camp. At nearby Kankakee River State Park, saddle up at the stables, then take to the scenic wilderness paths. Hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing and picnicking are other favorite park pastimes. At the campground, amenities include the pool, playground, basketball and volleyball courts and a game room-or relax under one of the big, shady oaks. There's a pavilion for your reunion or party needs.

This looks like an ideal location to appeal to Indiana and Illinois fishies, with lots to do. Maybe we could plan a Saturday afternoon picnic in the pavillion for the fish? Looks like they have cabins to rent too.....what do you think? Laurie

hi laurie
can you swim there? it sounds nice but have you been there? i wonder if you can swim on the kankakee. the beginning of june would be to cold to swim but it would be a great time to canoe....more water. i agree with you about the distance thing, although potato creek would probably be 2 hours, its very clean and you can swim, bike, canoe, fish, hike. i vote for family since it will be a weekend; i would like to bring my son (8 y/o).
thank you so much for doing this!!!!!
maybe each 'family' could bring a dish to share?

Camping Trip June 6-8, 2008
Families & Singles, everyone welcome!
Check in/out time is noon.

Kankakee South KOA costs:
The owner is accommodating POF, and has blocked many tent sites, a few trailer sites too, all close to each other. One tent site has water & electric we can use for the group. If we have a large group, he will let us use the Pavillion Saturday for free. The reduced flat rate cost he is giving us is $5 per person per night. (Kids and adults)
(Usual costs are $27 per night for tent site, $30 per night for tent site with water & electric, so they are being very kind to us.

I am planning an agenda for those who want to partake:
Friday afternoon & evening fishie arrival and camp set up, bond fire 8pm
Saturday morning canoe trip details, possible horseback riding details, fishie cookout dinner 5pm and evening bond fire.

More details later as to what to bring...........

For now I have to have a final head count in by May 28th. If you want to go, please sign up for the event, and send me an email with your contact info, so I can get you details as we get closer. You will also need to call KOA at 1-800-562-4192 and rsvp with your credit card for the number of people in your group so they can assign you the type of site you need. Keep in mind the warm season is here, so things will fill up quickly. If we need more sites early enough they can accommodate us.

I was just at that campground a couple weeks ago with my campers club from work. The Kankakee South Koa is actually located just south of the Kankakee County Fairgrounds off Rt. 45 & 52 (south of the junction of Rt. 45/52 & I-57) in Chebanse, IL. It is very easy to get to, and it is a nice small quiet campground. You can make reservations online at kankakeesouthkoa.com. They also have an area just for your dogs. They can place you down at that end of the campground if you wish for more convienence for you and your dog...even provide baggies. LOL
I won't be able to go on this camping get-together because I will be in Effingham for the IL State HOG Rally. But if there is going to be another camping event, I would love to go!!
