Paypal advice

i know this is gonna sound a very stupid question.

I have for the first time opened a paypal account, and have recieved an email saying funds will be in my bank on 14th may..so was just browing and saw something id like to buy for my daughter, but the item finishes on 12th, so i wrote to the seller explaining the problem and they came back saying i didnt need to have funds in my paypal account as it will come straight out of my bank..

Is this correct and can anyone give me any more advice on paypal accounts?

Paypal basically acts as a go between for you.

So in effect you put the funds in there & it is instantly transferred via Paypal to the person you are buying from. However the funds do not become available for either of you to withdraw for around a 5 day period...much like a cheque takes time to clear they will tell you its because they are performing checks to make sure the funds are available to transfer.

You can buy the item (I'm assuming its ebay) & then in essence pay later. It won't effect the way you are doing business with the person you are buying from in the slightest & will be the norm if they are an experienced seller.

You don't need to keep funds in a paypal account. Any payments come out of your bank account

Yeah its true, if your paying for something and you havent got the funds in your paypal account, paypal will take them from your bank instead.

Make sure your aware of all the transfer fees though, otherwise its pretty safe, quick and convienient. However keep in mind that ebay owns paypal and the two can be used by scammers to defraud you.

Out of interest, the guy that made facebook made paypal and once he lost at chess he got really angry and swept all the pieces of the board haha.

To be fair, just be careful, check the feedback of buyers, if they're Ebay power sellers its a definate bonus, ie if you dont recieve your goods you're protected by money back guarantee.

As others have said you can set up a debit or credit card so that you have the money instantly transferred. I personally find Ebay fairly good, until something does go wrong, then they're a bunch of retards... just my experience.

I'd take a look at paypalsucks.com it tells you all the things that can go wrong but bear in mind millions of people use it without any complaints.

yeah same here! I dont really buy electrical goods on ebay, as there are a lot of repro's, refurbs, and damaged goods.

paypal rules, i wish all sites accepted it as a form of payment....I don't have a credit card, not cause i couldn't get one, but simply cause i don't want one....paypal is quick and hopefully will become a standard way of paying for goods online from mulitple places, also be great for standing orders etc. I pay for my online gaming (eve-online) via paypal now.

What happens is when you set a Paypal account up they take about 1.00 and replace it a few days later. Some sort of security process??? Paypal is just like having a Debit card, and yes it does come out of your bank account, just the same as if you paid for your shopping at a supermarket by Debit.

The bottom line is that you actually get less protection using Paypal than if you just used a credit card or debit card using other verified online merchant services. The only reason that Ebay promote it is because they own it and generate massive revenues from the extortionate fees.

It's not a coincidence that there are so many anti Paypal websites that have been set up by people who have lost money because of them.

Agree with restless I wouldn't allow Paypal access to my bank account no way Jose. I do use it for payment from my debit card if the seller wishes that and I've got a bargain. Otherwise I pay cash on collection or send a cheque they can clear first before dispatch.

I would never buy anything that could go drastically wrong from ebay due to the complexities or virtually non existent back up they provide (or don't really).

I did buy an exercise machine for leg strengthening this morn (for me knackered knee) it retailed at over £120 (I checked) and got it for £1.99 chuckles, it can go wrong in a week or two at that price.

From my experience, they actually CREDIT your bank account with 2 amounts less than £1.00 - then went you see those credits hit ur account, you hit the link on the PayPal site to finalise/set up the PayPal account.

Been using payPal for ages now - & have to say, never had a problem so far (or am I tempting fate here) It CAN take a while for the payment to clear (again - like someone else on here - presuming we talking EBay here) but you can "buy" & "pay" via PayPal if you have a zero balance on the PayPal account (what I generally do anyways - as my current account is with a Building Society & I begrudge PayPal having my £ when I could be making interest on it...) - put it this way, bought from Ebay last week & it took about 6 days for the payment to be shown on Ebay as made, even thought it went from my bank account within 2 days...... As usual someone somewhere is making money on it!

I think have got the answer you were looking for, but be wary, I once had £1000 in my paypal account, this was a long time ago and things may have changed now, but I went to buy a mobile phone and my money ha vanished, I never got it back!! If I see something I like I will bid on it then send the seller a bankers draft and let them cash it before they send my item.

All paypl is, is a bank! that take your money and loose it, Depending on what your looking for If for example an electrical item, you can often find it as cheap or nearly as cheap elsewhere anyhow and you get a warraty etc,

Just watch for the fake emails trying to get you to log into your paypal account via a link in the email. I got one once that said my account had paid $1500 for two extra large dildos!!!! I kid you not!

It's all shock value to make you click the link quickly and login where they will steal your username and password.

So remember only ever login to the paypal site by going directly to it in your browser yourself.

I get Paypal to take any payments from my credit card when I use them for EBay or other sites. No need to have funds anywhere to pay at the time. You cn set it up to do this rather than direct to your bank. Then when there is a problem I have 2 targets to get cash back from. Having said this I have only had one issue in many years of buying & selling on EBay.

All paypal is, is a bank!

PayPal is not a bank, although they do perform some vaguely similar services.

One other thing worth mentioning as well, seeing as fraud has been brought up - if you pay for something with a Credit Card funded PayPal account - and do not receive it, then you do not have an automatic right to do a chargeback as you would if you just paid with the card outright. The Financial Ombudsman judged that Section 75 of the of the Consumer Credit Act does not apply when PayPal is involved.

A lot of CC companies will allow a chargeback in some circumstances, but it is purely a goodwill gesture...

It's an easy mistake to make. A friend of mine ordered an extra large dildo from the Anne Summers catalogue. She got a note back asking if she really meant to order the fire extinguisher!

At the bottom of the item listing it'll tell you the methods of payment, also you'll have received an email from the auction site to say you've won, this should have your sellers name and address.

i had my first bad experience this week with paypal. i sold a pushchair last week on ebay, i listed it on a buy it now or best offer, and 3 times a buyer put in a low offer, and 3 times i declined it, anyway in the end she decided to buy it at the price i wanted. anyhow when she received it she sent me an email saying it was full of mouldy food( it wasnt, i hadnt used it as id changed my mind and bought a diferent one, baby aint born till next week!) and if i sent her a £50 refund she wouldnt claim her money back through paypal. i politely told her to f off, and that id take my chances with paypal, she then reported me as item not as described, and offered me 3 diferent settlements to drop it. paypal put the money she had payed me on hold, i stuck by my guns and told her i wouldnt refund her anything. anyhow, in the end she must have realised i wasnt playing the game and dropped the paypal claim. they gave me my money back, but charged me AGAIN for receiving it! so i paid paypal fees twice!!!!!!! so sellers beware!!!

I've never bought anything off ebay, so have not used paypal, but was speaking to
someone this week who had lost out when he sold some games stuff, about £300.
As i said, i dont understand how it works but, they had waited for the ok from paypal,
then posted the gear off. He told me the paypal 'bounced'.
The games had gone from here in Liverpool to Newcastle, the police have got involved
because a fraud has been commited, but they have'nt been able to get an answer at the
house.
I may not have it exactly right, but that's the guist of the story, so it seems it's not just
caveat emptor, but sellers take care as well.
