2 centers rule

My buddy told me that every awesome team in the past 20 years has always been with a core of 2 centers. Yzerman/Federov, Sakic/Forsberg, Gretzky/Messier, Lemieux/Francis, and now it seems that Crosby/Malkin may be a winning combo as well. Its interesting that these 2 core guys always seem to stay while many wingers come and go, yet they still win. This is especially true in Colorados case. So what do you guys think? Is it the winning formula to a team. 2 elite centers and a team built around them? I think it is. Give me your thoughts.

Gilmour/Nieuwendyk

but not really alot of those teams in the 80s were stacked. same with a decent amout in the 90's so amazing top to centers came with the rest of the team. in todays nhl you need to be balanced spend to much at center and your wings may look weak.

your willing to spend upwards of 14 million on 2 top players that arnt on the ice at the same time. id rather have a top center with a top winger.

would you turn down nash? A.O.? iggy? St. Louis? nothing wrong with starting with one of them and bringing in a center. a star winger doesnt need a star forward to play great. great players will make the players around them better.

the bolts had to top centers in Lecavalier and richards didnt do them much good trying to build from the forward positon back.

your really just saying get your team some superstar talent and having 2 is a good thing. so i agree but not that its 2 centers to win. what if your 3rd and 4th line are weak?

"the bolts had to top centers in Lecavalier and richards didnt do them much good trying to build from the forward positon back."

Well ... they did win a stanley cup with those two so it wasn't the worst move in the world. But their biggest mistake was letting go of Khabibulin

I think Calgary had a good formula - 1 forward, 1 defenceman and 1 goalie ... they just can't get the right supporting cast.

It's really all about balance. To win the stanley cup you need three of the best four lines from top to bottom in the playoffs. And regardless of natural talent, it's also all about raising the level of play. Calgary in 04 and Edmonton in 06 were all about the entire team raising their levels of play

I was going to mention NJ as an example of team balance, but they really were the exact opposite. They were som dominatinf from the blue line in that you and I could have played forward for them

jersey had guys like holik and arnott to go along with madden in 2000-who as i recall wasnt the player he was then that he is now-and holik was a really good two way player then

and in 2003-didnt nieuwendyk/elias/gomez play centre for them?

i think they were weak in 95 but they were always a talented team that played a really good system-kind of like detriot and pittsburgh are playing now

Thereby the"blue line in" comment.
As good as Brodeur is, take away Stevens, Neidermeyer, Daneyko and Rafalski and the Devils don't win. That blue line was one of the most under-appreciated in hockey history.

Stevens, Neidermeyer, Daneyko and Rafalski

underappreciated?
by whom?
they were a great team
stevens waltzed into the hall
neidermeyer will follow
all rafalski does is play on team usa and win stanley cups-maybe another one this year

under-appreciated by a lot of folks this side of the border. Ask hockey fans about the NJ Devils that won the Cup and by and large, it starts and stops with Marty.

ok

but not my experience
-the fans i know know the scoop pretty good when it comes to the devils

i mean, brodeur is mentioned certainly but my god-those guys playing in front of him were incredible
-imagine having two guys like niedermeyer and rafalski moving the puck out of your zone?
most teams are lucky to have one...and stevens just punished guys

cheers
