"BOSTON — If a stay-at-home mom could be compensated in dollars rather than personal satisfaction and unconditional love, she'd rake in a nifty sum of nearly $117,000 a year.
"That's according to a pre-Mother's Day study released Thursday by Salary.com, a Waltham, Mass.-based firm that studies workplace compensation."

I heard this one on the radio Try to remember that the "study" would have used the highball figures, and not what the real market would be paying.

This idea of paying single parents to stay at home and actually raise their kids could well make some good results....too bad the gov't didn't try doing that when they helped make the two parent family a thing of the past.
ah well..heres to moms all over

With Mothers Day upon us this is a great post. It is funny than most men in this day and age make less than what a Stay at home mom deserves.

Slightly off topic but related. I did a social experiment about 5 years ago where I wanted to be like John Lennon and be a "HOUSE-HUSBAND". I used the same logic that was used in studdies done prior to this current study you posted. Interviewed in these original studdies were not only house wives, but people in related high end fields such as retail ( buyers for companies), transportation, sanitation and labor boards. These groups all agreed that most house wives work far more hours and do many of the pre-requisites it takes for these companies.

Using this logic I posted on Craigslist that I was seeeking a business oriented professional woman that wanted a stay at home foather for her future kids ( ours). I got such negative emails calling me Lazy, pathetic and red flagged as a pervert for nothing more than asking to do a much harder job that recieves no pay ( maybe an allowence) is rewarding and charater building. It is funny how these ladies made horrifyingly awfull assumptions of me based upon wanting to go against the grain. Needless to say, despitebeing a male feminist, I will stick too higher paying , less taxing work ( despite the fact I think I can handle house work for long hours and several days without respite).

Why don't they pay their live in nannys who do all the things a stay at home mom does the same wage instead of maybe 20 grand?

Numbers can be made to show whatever the number cruncher wants...

These studies always bugged me. athey always suggest that the father never does anything. Im a single father, and do all things any normal parent would do, plus hold a full time job as well. This give some women a sense of entitlement when they hear that number, being a parent isnt about entitlement, its about resposiblty

I was a stay at home dad for three years. I was called all sorts of names. Mostly along the lines of deadbeat. Besides taking care of the kids and largely running the household I also managed a rental house we owned. Fixed our cars. Raised and canned a big garden every year. Raised and butchered a few hogs for our freezer and milked a cow!

Ironically stay at home dads don't seem to fare any better in custody battles then father's who were working out of the household.
