How Far Is Too Far in South Florida ?
Posted: 5/9/2008 10:42:45 AM
I've read in the forums for other states/countries that some people are willing to travel 3.5 hours or hundreds of miles to meet someone that interests them. That seems VERY excessive to me, but I'm wondering what others in Florida think. How far is too far for a first meeting?

I'm not in FL but I'll say the Keys or Naples lol... I don't need to be a FL resident to know what's "too far" south in FL to travel for a date/meeting...

Although, if there's some communicating beforehand, the limitations of traveling distances could be made greater, due to a better a better idea of the potential chemistry.

How about Alaska Yep, travelled there as well to meet/date a man a few years ago. That's nearly 5 thousand miles from where I live!!!

If I perceive them as a keeper, logistics is of little concern. I am much more interested in finding a quality person than a convenient one!

I've already stated in my profile that I'm open for relocation, so I really have no limit.

It would be nice if he were close by since if I'm going to be involved with a man, I would want frequent physical contact. But I'm also a patient person. If I find a gentleman that doesn't just live around the corner (within a few miles) and I can trust him ... as long as I know there will eventually come a time that we'll be together as a couple, I can tolerate some distance between us. But we'd really have to be working on getting the distance thing solved ... quickly.

Let's do the math here:

I'm a custodial parent so I have to feed my kid before leaving the house so that means dinner is over at 7:00p which is the earliest I can leave.

Add in drive time 30 minutes, another 15 minutes to get to the resturant, another 1.5 hours to eat, 15 minutes back to her house and 30 minutes back home. I just spent an hour and 30 minutes commuting for an hour and 30 minute dinner.

Now if she's had a bad day and wants to spend dinner complaining why in the world would I want to commute 1.5 hours to spend 1.5 hours listening to someone whine and complain?

I think I would rather stay home, read a good book and drink a nice glass of wine.

How far would I travel? Not very.

How's that working for me? Who cares, I'm happy as hell the way things are now!

Honestly I would be hard pressed to drive to St Pete or Clearwater living in Tampa. I just don't see the point.

^^^^Good point too ... given the price of gas these days ... with no relief in sight.

Right now ... since I switched jobs and am on the road all day, the last thing I want to do is get in my car and drive 30 minutes to meet someone I might not even be sincerely interested in.

I guess (in Message 5) I was responding to the OP in that if a gentleman showed sincere interest and if after emailing and telephoning for a while, we decided to meet, I'd be willing to make the effort to meet even if it were far away. But just to meet & greet ... I don't want to spend hours on the road.

For example ... I'm from Ohio and am flying up there in July for a wedding and some family time. I am writing to gentlemen from the Columbus area and hope to meet up with a couple while there. It's not a special trip just for that, but if things should "click" with a man up there, I would not hesitate to relocate back to Ohio. In the meantime ... it would just have to be a "long-distance" relationship ... eh?

Now if she's had a bad day and wants to spend dinner complaining why in the world would I want to commute 1.5 hours to spend 1.5 hours listening to someone whine and complain?
I wouldn't drive 1.5 hours to meet anyone I did not get to know first in telephone conversations. I would say that if a woman is going to be a "whiner", you will find out after a few telephone conversations when all you have to ask is ... "How was your day?"

If she's the "whiney" type ... no matter how good her day was ... she'll find something about it to whine about. NEXT!!!!

I think more than 30 miles is a bit much to commute for a relationship.

I live in Boynton Beach, and I can't see myself driving down to Fort Lauderdale for a relationship... if its a one time thing, maybe I can see it... but on a daily/regular basis?

I don't think so.

I don't think any distance is too far to find true love. As long as I can drive up on the weekend and stay, it's fine with me.

I think you missed the point... it was not about driving 1.5 hours it was about investing 1.5 hours... and I would never have a dinner date with anyone I had not already met... repeatedly. Not EVER.

I think it all depends on the person and the persons personality. I myself have flown and met many nice ladies. I have been to Denver of which I had always wanted to go to anyways. I have been to Mo., to Ny,Ny which was a blast, to Cleveland -of which I went to the Rock and Roll hall of fame , to Atlanta and last but no least to La. Now ladies, I was not traveling to get that so called- notch in my belt. I was simply looking for Miss Right.Matter of fact, out of all those escapades I went on I only had sex once, not counting the girl in La. I thought I had finally met the woman of my dreams in La. We went back and forth and she taught me that I do not do long distance relationships well because I like to see a woman that I really have feelings for at least 2-3 times a week. She felt the same way and finally moved down here to Fl.. Well it did not work out because I have a business down here and her hubby would not let her little ones come down here. So we tearfully said goodbye.
Today I can honestly say that the next woman I meet will be much closer than La, though knowing me if I met someone here on POF and she lived in Alaska and I really had feelings for her and her with me- then Alaska bound I would be.
Peace

Well, I'm in Fort Myers, and considering there doesn't seem to be people that want to get to know me here (at least judging from the responses I've gotten), I'm perfectly willing to go wherever the right woman is. But then again, that's me. It wouldn't matter that gas hits 10 bucks/gallon, so long as she's the right one. It's a matter of what you believe is reasonable. Some folks only want to find someone local, and that's fine, but I've always been of the opinion that if someone is worth getting to know, she's worth going wherever she is. Now the flip side to that is that she's got to be willing to do the same for you.

Skip, I admire your willingness to travel!

But like you, I want to see my special someone 2-3 times a week and with kids at home (I'm the custodial parent), business etc. I not only can't be hopping on planes, I can't be driving all over Gods green earth either.

Well heck, I drove 8 hours twice a month in a relationship that lasted 7 years and the last two years flew across the big pond to spend 6 weeks in Europe with a gent.
Wouldn't have gone to all that trouble and expense if I had know he was going to be such a jerk. But was lonely at the time and I met him when he was here on vacation.
Live and learn I suppose.
But distance makes no difference to me If I'm really attracted to someone.
BESIDES ....... I LOVE to travel ........ just having to do it alone for now.
