| Beck - Posted: 5/9/2008 9:11:26 PM | Ok, I realize that this is really behind the times, but here's the deal:
Just within the last few weeks I've discovered Beck. I don't know why I haven't heard him before, although I've known of him for 10 years or so. The only Beck I listened before was Jeff Beck. Anyway, I think this other Beck is one of the coolest, most interesting, and original musicians I've ever heard. Diversity seems to be his specialty, yet all of his stuff sounds exactly like him......if that makes sense.
The stuff that really stands out to me is 'The Information' and 'Guero'. Have you ever heard the tune, 'Hell Yes' off of Guero? His use of the harp (blues harmonica) on that is a textbook example of subtlety. If you haven't heard this guy yet, you owe it to yourself to give Beck a listen. If you're already hip, please add your impressions and let me know if I'm missing something in his other recordings.

I couldn't agree more.
I have been a huge Beck fan ever since I first heard "Loser" way back in 1994 if I remember correctly. At that time he seemed to be heading towards one-hit wonder territory as that was a cute song on an otherwise uneven album. That was until he released "Odelay", an album which was released to world-wide acclaim and turned him into an international phenomenon. Since that time he has continued to release increasingly stellar music, in my opinion.
The coolest thing about Beck's music is that he is the only artist which I can play for people and, no matter what their musical taste, they will undoubtedly enjoy what they're hearing to some degree.
Beck should have a new disc out sometime this year and word on the street is that he has been recording with DJ Danger Mouse - one half of Gnarls Barkley - so I am super excited to see what they come up with. Should be a fun ride.

| Beck - Posted: 5/10/2008 9:55:04 AM | | Beck & Emmylou Harris (the world's best harmony singer) recorded a great cover of The Flying Burrito Brother's 'Sin City' on "Return of the Grievous Angel/A Tribute to Gram Parsons"... | |
|
| Beck - Posted: 5/10/2008 8:57:07 PM | | Beck has the amazing ability to take absolutely anything and make it into great music. I especially love his covers, the only cover songs I've ever liked more than the original, namely David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" | |
|
| Beck - Posted: 5/11/2008 3:05:56 PM | | Do you mean Jeff Beck? He's the only Beck I ever heard of. I sure like his music. | |

Thats all you need to know!
|
| Beck - Posted: 5/13/2008 11:29:45 AM | | "Midnight Vultures" or the mellow "Sea Change"..are probably my fave 2 Beck L.P.'s. | |
|
| Beck - Posted: 5/16/2008 5:38:59 PM | I really liked "one foot in the grave" on K records, mid 90's. Robutussin Rock! | |
|
| Beck - Posted: 5/20/2008 8:40:07 AM | I love the song BeerCan | |
|
| Beck - Posted: 5/21/2008 8:05:33 PM | | Beck is amazing. His "Odelay" album was one of my favorite growing up and then I never really listen to his albums until, like you, I very recently discovered(well...rediscovered) him with Guero. Wonderful album. Can't say that I like the any of the albums between Odelay and Guero though. | |

| Beck - Posted: 5/24/2008 11:36:08 AM | Very sad song. I also think his song, "Nobody's Fault But My Own" is one of the most soulful and heartfelt songs I've ever heard.
Heavy stuff. | |

| Beck - Posted: 5/24/2008 11:37:31 AM | Here are some very cool Beck tunes if anyone is wondering where to begin with his music:

| Beck - Posted: 7/3/2008 4:12:00 PM | | I'm a Beck fan too, even if I only have Mellow Gold. It's the eccentricity of his music that I love, and his lyrics are sublime. Songs like Steal My Body Home and Hotel City gave me the creeps the first time I heard them. I couldn't tell you the last time a song genuinely scared me via sound and lyrics. | |
|
| Beck - Posted: 7/7/2008 1:14:26 PM | Beercan and Black Tambourine
Msg 26 I couldn't tell you the last time a song genuinely scared me via sound and lyrics.
Try listening to Celine Dion's cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long"...

| Beck - Posted: 7/11/2008 12:05:30 PM | | Beck is a very good artist. I can't picks favourites, there are too many. I own just about all of his recordings, either on indie labels or big labels. Mellow Gold, though, is amazing. Modern Guilt is a decent half assed effort, but he has time to redeem himself! | |

Modern Guilt is a decent half assed effort
I don't know if I'd be so harsh as to say that, but upon a few spins of Modern Guilt I have to say his new album is very melancholy. Lots of songs about death and remorse, but it definitely doesn't sound like anything he's ever done. And that is why I love Beck in the first place, because his sound keeps changing from one album to the next.
|
| Beck - Posted: 7/12/2008 2:46:05 PM | Beck truly is a great artist. Very original and upbeat.
Check out "Go it alone" and "Girl", along with the others mentioned earlier.
|
| Beck - Posted: 7/15/2008 7:38:17 PM | | I defenitly agree. I always look forward to his new work because of his diverse style. But I just didn't feel as much energy from him this time around. | |
