| Which to do first? Posted: 5/10/2008 6:48:47 PM | | I'm trying to figure out travel plans for September, and with the rising price of airfares I'm wondering if I should purchase the flight first, then look at making my itinterary fit. I'm having a hard time finding a good price on airfare to Scotland because I want to get there in time for a particular event (then stay for about three weeks), so now I'm thinking I might just have to take what I can for airfare, then figure out the itinerary. Any thoughts? Also, what's the difference between a guest house, and a B&B, if any? | |

Find out times and schedules and be as familiar with them as you can so it’s not a huge last minute effort to plan everything.
I've learned to do just that myself and have had a couple fantastic vacations and haven’t felt like I didn’t get to see or do something because I hadn't figured it out and booked it months in advance.
I've also found visiting travel sites/forums and not just the popular mega sites but more localized ones and check out the what the frequent travelers and locals to that particular place love and don't and all the how, when, where and why's, from how to get there, what to do, how much is it, and where to get the best.....Haggis or Scotch! I'd go with the Scotch for sure!
No matter how you get there, you are getting there so have fun and enjoy!

| Which to do first? Posted: 5/11/2008 10:43:00 AM | | What I'm encountering is that international flights go into Glasgow, but I want to be in Edinburgh by the first weekend in Sept. because I can do a daytrip up to the highland games in Braemar from there. I also don't want to have to backtrack to Glasgow to fly home, but it seems that I would have to fly through Heathrow if I leave from Edinburgh, and the price skyrockets! The charters into Glasgow are priced pretty good, but the return date later in September is difficult. Two weeks seems doable, but I want to stay three weeks so I can get up to the highlands, and islands. Maybe as it gets closer to September there will be more flights. | |

Then you will be able to get a bus from Glasgow center to airport...about 20mins
Or there may even be a direct bus service from Edinburgh center to Glasgow airport...either way seems quicker then going via LHR. Have you checked out Glasgow airports information on how to get there...?
Also there is no difference really between a guest house and B+B...
Also for more information check out www.virtualtourist.com and for the cheapest accomodation ever try www.couchsurfing.com

I went ahead and bought my airline ticket. Got a great deal (round trip) from Dallas to Quito is $824 (including taxes). It is now over $950.
If you know where and when you want to go, then buy the airline ticket. Keep in mind, you'll probably buy a "nonrefundable" airline ticket. If you can't make Scotland during that time for some reason, make sure that you can still use your airline ticket for another destination. You may have to pay an extra charge.
As far as lodging goes, check out the couchsurfing website. B& B may run you more bucks than a guest house. Also check into some of the hostels. Time is on your side for shopping around. | |

| Which to do first? Posted: 5/12/2008 1:17:10 PM | | Yeah, the price of airfares is steadily climbing. I've been doing some looking for fares myself on various websites, and there is such a wide price difference, and then what the travel agent tells me is something different again. I can't help but think that not everyone is being honest, but I'm not sure who to trust. The travel agent tells me the cheapest flights are in and out of Glasgow, but I have found good prices when I search for 'open jaw' fares into Edinburgh, and out of Glasgow. But, I don't really know what I'm doing so I'm wondering if I'm missing something. | |
