| The Vampire - in truth and fiction Posted: 5/10/2008 9:57:24 PM | In fiction, the vampire is a supernatural being that drains the blood of its victims. It is able to pass among its victims unnoticed and this blending allows it to trap and destroy. Once it is established that there is a vampire, the general behavior is to not believe in it. The real vampires among us are those who, under the guise of being social and somewhat disarming, seduce and drain the material assests of its victims. Male or female, the vampire selects its victims in a group setting, is able to manipulate and coerce, using the weaknesses of the victims as a tool to latch on and begin feeding. Divide and conquor is another tactic of the vampire, while seducing - sexualy or emotionaly - the target, they rely on a don't ask don't tell mentality that the group uses as a basic function. The result is that the target is isolated and any actions taken by the vampire remain hidden. The vampire works to ensure that there are many victims lined up and ready to go, that way if the current victim realizes whats happening and fights back the next victim can be activated and the game continues. In this way the vampire can continue indefinately in its feeding, as people somewhat aware of whats going on, tend to disbelieve the victim when they come forward, prefering to think that it is a case of sour grapes or some such. It takes quite awhile for enough victims to pile up before the vampire is exposed. But then there is no shortage of fresh targets to fill the void. People who are vulnerable for one reason or another; insecure, negative self image, vulnerable due to recent loss of relationship, or other weakspots the vampire looks for and exploits. So, anyone know of any vampires? | |

| The Vampire - in truth and fiction Posted: 5/13/2008 10:33:57 PM | Let's see, you have to drink the blood of the living, you can't go into direct sunlight, and you have a chance at virtual immortality.
I dunno, there must be a downside here somewhere that I'm missing ....
Btw Clan Toreador rules !!!!

Clan Transylvannia is way better!!
Clan Transylvania? wtf ? I'm thinking we're on different pages here
Speaking of Transylvania, if you're into wine I'd reccomend "Vampire" wine ( no joke), inexpensive & they have a merlot and a chardonnay availoable at the LC.
It's imported from Transylvania, with a brief history of winemaking in the region on the label.
The perfect wine for your Halloween bash, with a couple great ad slogans:
Taste the blood of the vine. & A taste of immortality.

| The Vampire - in truth and fiction Posted: 5/16/2008 11:58:47 PM | My ancestors date back to the 1300's and further in transylvania
and I would have to say that I wholeheartedly agree that there are many forms of vampyre out there, as well as trolls, witches, ogres etc etc.
we live and deal with them daily.
and yet
we go on... | |

| The Vampire - in truth and fiction Posted: 7/3/2008 8:48:08 PM | Thorndyke, it sounds like you've been reading a Robert Hare book. For his kind of vampire, if I recall it is 1 to 4% of the population, depending on where you draw the line. So we all meet that kind of person, without conscience, only shallow feelings, unable to feel empathy. I'm 100% sure I've met a 4 in the workplace over the years, but probably there were many more.
Brahm Stoker must have met people like that, and not had a label for them. They'd have fit perfectly with the Transylvanian legends, giving a personality to bring the myths to life.
But the vampires in the media today, they are nothing like that. They are portrayed like us, but as the girls say, immortal, ageless, physically powerful, perfect, inexhaustible, with centuries of wisdom, generally constrained only by sunlight and the need to consume some type of blood every few days. So you have a friend at a blood bank to be your "supplier". If vampires were like these modern vampires, the pluses would outweigh the downsides.
