| Hiking back in time along the I&M Canal (A Group Hike) JUNE 7th Posted: 5/11/2008 7:49:49 PM | Trail Distance: 10 miles (8.4 miles Canal Trail and 1.7 miles Forest Preserve Trail) Trail Pace: brisk, 3 miles/hour Trail Condition: Easy, mostly crushed limestone. Trail Time: 5 hours Driving Time: ??. (50 miles southwest of Chicago). Start Time: 9:30 am.
We will be hiking the historical I&M Canal Trail from Aux Sable Access to Channahon State Park in Channahon. We will see scenic wooded areas, an aqueduct, river areas (Illinois, Des Plaines, and Dupage Rivers), and wildlife. We will hike by the Kankakee bluffs. These bluffs overlook the confluence (Channahon is the Indian word for "the meeting of the waters") of the Des Plaines, Kankakee and Illinois Rivers. The bluffs are called the Kankakee Bluffs because that is the direction in which they point and are most noticeable. Another neat feature of the canal is an Aqueduct at Aux Sable. On the way, we will stop at McKinley Woods (Will County Forest Preserve) for lunch and for a 1.7 mile hike through the forest. (The 0.5-mile Heritage Trail and the 1.2-mile Trail of the Old Oaks takes visitors through bluffs and ravines carved out by the receding glacier.) (In another part McKinley Woods, we have an option (if time allows) to take another trail, about 1 ½ mile (Paved Bike Trail) to see where the Dupage River runs into the Des Plaines River.) Then we will hop back on the I&M Canal Trail for the last 3 miles to Channahon State Park.
This is a one way hike. We will meet at I&M Trail access at Channahon (Channahon State Park). (The road signs say I&M Trail access, but the Illinois DNR website calls it Channahon State Park). Then we will take as few cars as possible to Aux Sable to start our hike. We will be leaving Channahon for Aux Sable at 9:45 sharp. After the hike we will all need to drive back to Aux Sable to pick up our cars. Following Members are Attending This Party... Average Member Brings Along 3 Guests

| Hiking back in time along the I&M Canal (A Group Hike) Posted: 5/11/2008 10:04:44 PM | Hello. Do you have a date for this hike? I currently live and grew up in the Channahon area, and I used to ride my bicycle or hike the I&M Canal Trail (aka "the tow path") when I was a kid. I am only 1 1/2 mile from the Channahon State Park, and the Dupage River runs right behind my house. Also the waters that meet in Channahon are actually the I&M Canal, Dupage River and DesPlaines River to make the Illinois River. Tonya | |

| Hiking back in time along the I&M Canal (A Group Hike) Posted: 5/12/2008 6:24:02 AM | i know the spot....i camped there a couple of years ago. theres actually a place where you can canoe/kayak the river to a campground and then portage a small area to return via the canal. when are you planning the hike? sounds intense; i might slow you down 'cause i'm not that brisk of a walker when the scenery is saw cool. is the aquaduct your talking about the one that goes over the river? | |

| Hiking back in time along the I&M Canal (A Group Hike) Posted: 5/14/2008 5:07:21 PM | | I won't be able to make it that day either. I am going to be at the IL State HOG (Harley Owners Group) Rally in Effingham. If I wasn't going to that rally, I would be going to the campout at the Kankakee Koa that same weekend. Maybe another time, though. | |

| Hiking back in time along the I&M Canal (A Group Hike) JUNE 7th Posted: 5/28/2008 8:30:45 PM | Oh come on now funnygal. I bet you can do it! 20miles is really not that far. I did the 355 tollway on opening day, that was 25miles and we covered it in about an hour, riding in the wind. It was a brutal day,but worth it. It will come back to you, no doubt about it. This hike sounds great, but cant make it. Maybe another time. Hope you all have a good time,
