| Ohio man jailed for his daughter not passing the GED. Posted: 5/12/2008 12:54:58 PM | I guess this is where I should post this.
An Ohio man is jailed after his daughter failed to pass the GED test. Apparently she was a little bit of a problem child when she was growing up. She skipped classes and for the most part didn’t go to school when she was 16. Anyway, when she failed to pass the GED test, a judge in Ohio sentenced her farther to jail for 180 days for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. I live in Ohio and I am slightly bothered by this. This makes you not want to have children. What happens if I have one that isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed? I could go to jail. I was wondering if others are disturb by this as well.

I think Britain could do with that kinda action on the parents for a whole host of things...lol....thats according my mother.Naturally I was marched off to school pronto every day.

The girl in question is pretty well spoken. No pressure on her though, just has to pass the math section so her dad can get out of jail. Lol

| Ohio man jailed for his daughter not passing the GED. Posted: 5/12/2008 3:17:24 PM | On one hand I can see how a parent can be held to account for a child not being in school. On the other hand there is only so much supervision that a parent can give a kid after they put them on the buss or drop them off.
Example: My brothers are prime examples of kids who just did not want to be at school. My father took my brother and I to school every day (until we could drive ourselves), most days my brother would find a friend and they would leave school as soon as he got there. My dad did his part in taking him to school, what more is he supposed to do? The school has an automated system which informs parents when a kid isn't at school, but all a kid has to do is intercept the call--the smart kids just CALL BLOCK THE SCHOOL.
The nanny state wants to strip away every right that a parent has to discipline their children yet freaks out when the kid is a miscreant creep? Give me a break! It doesn't take a "Village", it takes freakin' parents who are allowed to lay down the dang law!

| Ohio man jailed for his daughter not passing the GED. Posted: 5/12/2008 3:27:11 PM | Not knowing all the details, this is sad with all of the really terrible things going on and the people who really need to be locked up. I do realize that in this day in age schooling is considered very important for future career and survival, but it is sad that it is taken as seriously as it is. When my grandparents were in school it wasn’t like it is today, as is with a lot of things I realize, but my grandma was good in school and my grandpa wasn’t. He ohnly went to the eighth grade and then learned to be an electrician and a plumber and a farmer. He worked very very hard for years and now has retired very well. Nowadays, that would not have been accepted. They even took their first few children out of school, first before high school but by my mother by the tenth grade. My mother stopped at that point and then got a job at a department store in the sewing section. When she met my dad she became a stay-at-home mother and then when we grew up she got a great job which she worked her way with looking after grown men with mental disabilities in a group home. She does basically the same stuff as a nurse does but without the education a nurse needs. I know that was luck a lot but I have had trouble getting through high school and haven’t been able to go to school since. I get hope from her that it will still work out. Not everyone is meant for the kind of education that is thought to be so important these days. It puts a lot of pressure on people to fit in and fill the mold of intelligence. I could very well fail the math section being that I have just never been good at math. I am good at English and stuff but not so good with numbers. I would hate to think that my math results on any test would be the thing to put my own father in jail. I hate to see how the justice system is being utilized sometimes. | |

Posted: 5/12/2008 3:46:28 PM | Typical grandstanding stunt by another dipshit judge that can't stand the fact that s/he isn't in the spotlight enough. What the judge needs to do is get off the bench and run for congress or some other position where making empty gestures that do more harm than good are accepted and noticed by the media and the general public. Aren't are jails overcrowded enough? And what does it cost to house an inmate, even in a city lockup? And I ask that because I seriously doubt that her father being in the slammer for HALF THE YEAR is going to inspire her to pass; and this guy -who I'm sure isn't "Father of The Year material anyway- is likely to lose his job, becoming more of a drain on the tax rolls.

This makes you not want to have children. If the only place a person gets their information is FOX 'news', maybe they shouldn't have children.
A judge ordered the father to stay on top of his daughter's education months ago and when that order wasn't followed, he was sentenced to jail.
As I understand it, the court order was issued as a negotiated compromise to keep the consistently truant and clearly troubled pregnant teen out of juvenile hall.

| Ohio man jailed for his daughter not passing the GED. Posted: 5/12/2008 4:27:29 PM | | I have no sympathy for this man, who clearly can't be bothered to raise his child properly. Maybe he should be sterilized as well as imprisoned. On the other hand, the young woman has no excuse to fail the GED. Evidently, she is lazy and irresponsible. She should be punished as well. | |

Even FOX had most of the information.... Only they added the spin of Poor Guy and poor little girl crap.....
Grandstanding.... The Judge Should have put the poor little girl in Foster care ...THREE YEARS AGO...
How much court time.......TAX $$$ have been wasted to this point.....
Custody with father living with mother, skipping school.........
Now She is almost 19... and doing ok?????
They were trying to skate on terms of A juvenile court order... Should the judge have said its OK your 19 years old now....
Court Orders and interrogatories have to dealt with......... OR YOU GO TO JAIL.

Maybe the Girl And her Father Learned a Lesson...
I think that's exactly the point. Very often, when it comes to matters of young people that involve criminal activity (from the pettiness of truancy to the seriousness of murder) a popular mob sentiment is "hold the parents accountable - that'll learn them!".
The underlying assumption is that parents (specifically, their dearth/wealth of parenting skills) are ultimately responsible for the actions of their minor children until they've reach the age of majority. With an ear for popular opinion, the judge in this case is merely giving the public what it wants.
And I think that makes him smarter than he's being given credit for. Or maybe I'm just giving him too much credit. I don't know... I have to confess that, when it comes to the American judicial, juvenile welfare and educational systems, I am totally Unfrozen Caveman Internet Pundit.

Having been the Victim a few times ... Juvenile's and the Parents will slow walk with the lawyer to avoid Paying Damages and restitution ... The Judge will let it go.... Petty stuff...
Its nice to see Dad stepping up...

No offense to anyone of that state, but if this incident is any indication, your state is ****ed up in a serious way , atleast as it relates to the court/law situation in this particular case. At first I didn't know whether this belonged in the Humour thread or not, but that judge that was high on the wheel (as it appears) needs to be fired. and removed from that position.

| Ohio man jailed for his daughter not passing the GED. Posted: 5/12/2008 11:54:20 PM | This is pretty stupid.
I don't have any problem with the courts holding parents accountable for the actions of their children to some degree. What I don't understand is why this man is being jailed at all. Firstly, it was over two years ago that she was a truant (although obviously her lack of a diploma today makes it clear she didn't get her act together in time anyway) Secondly, she was living with her mother (so if either parent is going to prison why isn't it her ?) Thirdly, she is trying to get her GED now. Lastly, this girl isn't a minor anymore anyway so what does this have to do with her father at this point ?
Obviously the idea the judge is trying to convey is to make an example of this guy. Unfortunately the judge made a stupid choice in using this case as the template for future decisions.

A plea Bargain is a contract..... My guess Dad made a deal to keep the kid out of Foster Care.... The Judge should have dropped the hammer back then... Foster Care Instead of how ever many court dates and time taken up...

I beg your pardon??... the judge is trying to make an "example" out of this guy?????.....EXAMPLE???? , I'm sorry but wouldn't that techniquely be considered a form of......rape?????!!?!?!?!?! I mean think about it. If the "judge" (evidently not much of one) decides to do something to a person, out of the ordinary, for no legitamite reason against the persons will and not to mention to someone who does NOT deserve to go to jail for this, and saying that he (the judge) used that person as an "example"... then that really is giving the impression that the judge essentially committed a form of psychological/emotional rape against this man.

Huh ? What are you ranting at me for ? D'uh, yeah, obviously the judge is using this man as an example of sorts. You do know what that word means don't you ? It's really not very difficult to connect the dots here. And please....don't use words like 'rape' out of context. It really cheapens the meaning of words when you apply them willy-nilly to whatever strikes your fancy.

I'm not. I am really upset at the judge and the whole possibility/concept of him using someone as an "example", thats what I'm ranting at...not you.

I know and thats what is troubling....the fact that he would choose to do that with someone who infact hasn't done anything wrong to the extent of deserving jail. I mean parents should be responsible for their kids and make sure they get the best and healthiest education as possible, but to put someone in jail for his child not getting a good result on a test is way out of line in my opinion.
And please....don't use words like 'rape' out of context. It really cheapens the meaning of words when you apply them willy-nilly to whatever strikes your fancy.
Well...if we would ask this guy who is the victum of this, to tell us how he feels regarding being jailed, I think some of the words or phrases he would use to describe this act may include phrases like - "Abuse of Power", "excessive or unnecessary use of power or control over someone innocent", possibly he would say this is like "tyranny" and other words like that.
I could have used the word "abuse" or even "victumize", but the same idea is still there.
But also, as I mentioned the father or any parent for that matter, should hold more responsiblity in making sure they raise their kids up right from an early age so they can grow up into being good responsible, mature people with character.

just because his daughter is lazy, doesn't mean he failed at parenting!! i dropped out of school right before i hit 16, and the school threatened my mom. so i went back until my 16th birthday. lol....meh.
my mother has raised me well, i was just a lost soul at that time. rebellion at the least. she tried her hardest. she tried EVERYTHING to keep me in. weekly meetings with the principal became a routine for the 3 of us.
happy to say i learned the hard way. why am i happy? because even though it took me this long, i finally found my true calling and am starting college this summer. =)
O.P - i think this girl SHOULD go to juvi.....the father should've stayed on top of it as well. even though i do have sympathy for the man, i don't disagree with what happened to him. just goes to show his daughter really doesn't care.

| Ohio man jailed for his daughter not passing the GED. Posted: 5/14/2008 12:05:39 PM | When I read this post I assumed it was being taken out of context and that the Dad had somehow been so beligerent with the judge that he was sited for contempt of court. After watching the link I was amazed. The judge actually did send a guy to jail because his daughter flunked a test. She was a teenager when she ditched classes not a grade school child. Lots of kids do things beyond their parents control during their teenage years! Society in general has turned to condoning blaming others for your lot in life. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. Now even the judicial system is contributing to this philosophy and blaming someone other than the person at fault. Now thats just great! Teach the daughter to start blaming others for her personal deficiencies at an early age!!
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! | |

| Ohio man jailed for his daughter not passing the GED. Posted: 5/14/2008 12:06:47 PM | Someone tell me I'm not the only one that finds it a bit disturbing that they will jail someone for their kid's school issues? As long as it hasn't changed, everyone has a mind, everyone can decide what they want to and don't want to do. So... if she really didn't care, who says she would even try to pass the thing?
I don't know everything but I heard about it yesterday. It just makes me wonder how far things will go with this kind of thing. Kids make choices, if they don't want to be in school, they won't be, if they don't want to pass a test, they won't. It doesn't matter how much you teach them or whatever, if they just don't want to, they just won't.
