The 7.9-magnitude quake devastated a region of small cities and towns set amid steep hills north of Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu. Striking in midafternoon, it emptied office buildings across the country in Beijing and could be felt as far away as Vietnam.

I know our Country gets Bashed a lot form other countries,but who is the first to give some sort of Aid to other countries that have some sort of DISASTERS-

there are approximately 100 earthquakes a day. If you mean "one of the worst" by death toll then yes it about equal with the ones in iran and turkey. On average there is a massive death toll by a single earthquake every decade. If, however, you mean one of the worst by magnitude then no there is on average a 6 -8 magnitude earthquake every 18 months.

in the history known to mankind, only few earthquakes were above 8.0 richter scale. besides, one has to consider the intensity, this sichuan quake was 11 (12 is the maximum). according to the seismologists on WCAL, the sichuan earthquake would be the worst scenario for the potential california earthquake. usually this magnitude of earthquake takes very long time to build up its energy. plus, california isn't sichuan, the area is far, far more accessible than those rural areas of sichuan. rescue teams can easily reach the epicenter via roads, via air and on foot. sichuan was not. on the first few days, the troops had to hike into those mountainous regions, relied on shoulders of soldiers to carry basic supplies, due to the heavy rains, landslides and mudslides.
medias focused on the death tolls of those school children, but indeed, the deaths for those school aged victims only account for 0.1% so far.
if this magnitude quake ever happened in california, i would pray only for less people getting hurt and less death tolls. anything else we could rebuild after that. in the middle of epicenter, i don't see that much of hope to save anything, as long as those buildings could hold up enough time for the evacuation of people. | |

not yet, it is about 28881, but will be more. few villages were totally disappeared, i mean not even debris left, they were underneath huge landslides and mudslides. with more bodies counted, with more people (alive) counted, more accurate data would be in.

interestingly, tangshan region was classified as "less prone to earthquake" before the notorious quake, which killed almost 1/4 millions of people.

I hope all those parents who lost their single child in the quake will be able to adopt the orphans from this quake (should they wish to) - it would mean a lot to all lives.
I am also thankful for nowadays' Internet and communication technology that enable people in other countries to offer help almost immediately; all the Net photos and videos are so tearfully touching.
There are people in the Chinese Yahoo Forum who criticized US only donated $500,000 to China towards the Quake. Just be fair, US itself had so many weather catastrophe inside its country during the least past 2 years, who donated money to them? US is still busily struggling to rebuild its cities; and don't forget US owes the largest international debt. Just be glad it did make a donation from its thin pocket. | |

With all the pumping of oil out of the ground there is no more lubrication between the sub - surface plates hence causing progressively worse earthquakes.

1.military rush into the dizarster region after 33 hrs of the earthquake.
2.More that 220000 peiple were saved by militaries.
3.All the food was tossed from the helicopters by militaries.
4.Military slept no more than 4 hrs per day.

the wenchuan local military units started rescue operations 10 minutes right after the quake hit. if you are interested (i doubt so), i can show your video clips captured by tourists: the people were still running, huge dust storm created by the quake blurred the video clips. local armed police were dispatched to save injured
what about this:
sichuan 8.0 earthquake (usgs set as 7.9)
- 14:28, the quake stroke
- 14:46, xinhuai news agency announced the quake and central command center of chinese military was notified.
- 15:50, national wide disaster procedure officially activated
- 16:00, helicopters were dispatched to the areas since all of roads, communications were cut off (some parts still are, even now). that is the size of new jersey, mountains steeper than most of areas of Himalaya (where mt. everest located). though they were turned back by the heavy rains and extreme harsh terrains.
- 17:00, chinese premier wen was on the way to the quake zone
- 18:28, the first 2900 armed police as vanguards were dispatched to the hard hit areas from chengdu, 60 miles away from the epicenter. the order was: get int wenchuan city (at that time, they thought it was the worst hit area, but actually quite a few other areas were far worse), no matter what, even meant casualties.
- 18:44, 5000 more soldiers were dispatched to the quake zone.
- 1920, the central command structure for the disaster started functioning in chengdu, 60 miles away from the epicenter.
those activities were done under the conditions: 1) roads and communications to the epicenter were totally cut off 2) aftershocks, landslides, mudslides were still going on (actually are still happening) 3) heavy, pouring rains for over three days 4) soldier hiked over the mountains 21 hours in order to reach the wenchuan.
i can list more data and facts, but the above should be more than enough..
to its credits, the "black hawks" played the vital roles for the rescue operations, in such high attitude, mountainous regions, once the weather was cleared. those uh-60 aren't regular ones, they were specially designed for china qing-hai high plateau and special engines.
let's see the hurricane katrina over new orleans on the day 08/29/2005:
-48 hours before the hit, the federal and state governments had the warning over the potential disaster. 6:10 on 08/29/2005, new orleans was hit as expected.
-after over 5 hours, fema requested 1000 rescuers to be there in two days.
-after 36 hours later. the white house set up a commanding structure for the disaster and decided to start working "the second day"
-during 08/30 and 08/31, two calls were made to the Southern Pines Electric Power Association, asked to fix the power plant neary by collins, mississippi. that power plant is key power supplier for the pipe line between texas and east coast
-bush continued his vacation until 08/31. on the way back to the white house, he was on the "air force one", hovered over the disaster area. i guess he made his assessment for the disaster.
a lot of other data you must be proud of.. if you are interested, i can list more.
Hurricane Katrina, form on 08/23/2005, had been under surveillance since then; it was declared as the state emergency long before the actual hit, finally official death tolls? 1464.
maybe you should compare the new orleans with that of Myanmar.

the speedy response for the disaster, especially for mega-disaster, isn't surprise for chinese like me. historically it was always like that. the reason is very simple: handling disasters is a part of chinese military commanding structure. now just getting more professional. | |

Am I the only one who thinks that the respective governments secretly (or even publicly???) don't care about these earthquakes too much or even secretly welcome them as long as they're safe in their own residences? I suspect that is why Burma says, 'nah, you keep the food...' China needs to protect or work on their image (not to mention having the largest military so lots of people to act).
