| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/13/2008 2:26:06 AM | Hi guys,
I thought I would write to ask what is everyone's favourite Australian book.
I just finished Tim Winton's recently published "Breath" which was nothing short of brilliant. It is about a man in his 40's who as a paramedic attends the home of a 11 year old who has hanged himself ( but might be accidental ) then he reflects on his foolhardy youth riding big waves in southern beaches in WA.
What is astonishing about it this book is how it would appeal to literary junkies and sometimes/not so readers alike. I soooooo recommend it.
See a video of Tim talking about it here on 730 report http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2007/s2237159.htm
My favourite Aussie books in order though are:
1. Cloudstreet - Tim Winton, 2. Tommo and Hawk - Bryce Courtney 3. Dirt Music - Tim Winton 4. A fortunate Life - A.B FAcey 5. The White Earth - Andrew MCGahan
What are yours and why?

Does Shantaram count? true story written by an Aussie guy Gregory David Roberts about his adventures in India after fleeing prison in oz, one of my all time favourites. Then there's Snugglepot and Cuddlepie but sadly not much in between, great topic matt

they are currently filming dirt misic with colin farrel and rachael wiesz in WA (gosh knows why not aussie actors) and supposedly the riders and cloudstreet are being made into movies too.
I don't think you can transcend the books onto screen but goodluck to them..lol | |

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/13/2008 3:31:50 AM | | I was telling my editor only a a few weeks back how interesting Bryce goes about his work as compared to Tim Winton. At the end of a Bryce book you understand who he is kinda - his values and motivations. Tim Winton you nearly know less about him after a book. It's interesting how authors approach their stuff. | |

Tim was made into a movie with Mel?
All i remember about that movie is Mel in a pair of royal blue budgie-smuggglers....... Oh,and Piper Laurie was the older woman. Was quite a bitter sweet story. Way before "Mad Max"---think Mel was about 19,& his 2nd movie.......

| What is the best Australian book you have read? Posted: 5/13/2008 3:53:59 AM | | I guarantee people who want a read will kick em' selves at 50 pages of "Breath" saying thank Gawd I read this. Australian people need to read it, as its more Australian than nearly anything produced (in the sense its sophisticated yet grubby at the same time) but goes to the centre of what guilts, regrets promises, experiences we've had as middle aged adults and puts them into context. I can't wait to see Tim Thursday night in city! yay | |
