| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 4:02:10 AM | Can anyone please tell me the best and cheapest place to purchase travellers cheques, and do you have to order them? If so how far ahead.Or can you just go in somewhere and buy them. Ive been told the best place to get Euros is the post office? | |

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 5:10:30 AM | I would never use them again. Maybe I just had bad luck but brought some to France once. I thought they were supposed to be free to change. So why were we charged? Then we found it difficult to actually get them changed and wasted half a day traipsing round Perpignan finding a bank that would actually change them for us.
Get euros at Post Office, yep. Free of charge and good deal there. (Was possibly me that told you that anyway A!) LOL!

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 7:09:11 AM | Why use travellers cheques? Debit and credit cards are accepted throughout Europe, take a bit of cash for the journey and job done.
I feel a bit sorry for anyone travelling to most of the EU at the moment- the exchange rate is horrendous against the pound.
Enjoy your hols. | |

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 8:52:39 AM | Hi all just a general note on this topic. The easiest way to take money abroad with you , is to have a current account and a savings account, over the internet , transfer funds from savings to current account, then go to a hole in the wall and draw out max for the day. sorry I forget which bank is the best, so shop around I have used my debit and credit cards in Aus NZ USA . dont take travellers cheques to Aus they rip you off with charges. I have also used the in europe | |

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 8:53:58 AM | | try co op travel, or for future reference nationwide don't charge for using your card abroad. | |
|
| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 8:57:51 AM | | Or... Post office do a special Visa card that you effectively top up with the amount of cash you want to take with you, and you can use it at atm's or in restaurants/bars etc for free of charge, or possibly a small fee, seems a good dealio to me! | |
|
| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 9:59:17 AM | I have a UK account with Nationwide, I can pull money out at the atm free of charge and yes it's in euros. Why didn't I think of this til prompted by someone on here DOH!
Most other banks make a small charge for this service though.

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 10:37:17 AM | | The post office is good for exchanging, they dont seem to charge much commision. | |
|
| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 12:27:57 PM | I've found that if the commission is low/free, the rate is crap, the same with buy back free.
To get a reasonable comparison ask how much it will cost to get 200 euros or whatever it is you want.
I have used plastic for everything the last few times I've been abroad, bung everything you can on credit cards and get cash with switch. The 2.5% commission on switch (cash from ATM) transactions is the same as travelers cheques so there is no difference except the banks don't have to be open to use an ATM.
Have a good holiday. | |

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 12:30:26 PM | When i was in Ibiza i found it easy to change uk sterling to euros and got a damned better rate than in the uk too.
I used travellers cheques when i travelled the world but never again, it is hard to find somewhere to change them for currency and yes they do charge you to change them its disgusting!

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/13/2008 12:54:21 PM | | The post office travellers card seems a good idea, and they refund the balance if your card is lost or stolen. Safer than carrying cash around, just like using a debit card | |
|
| travellers cheques Posted: 5/14/2008 10:16:36 AM | | I looked into the post office visa card today and each time you use the card you are charged £2 a time if you are abroad | |

| travellers cheques Posted: 5/16/2008 2:59:30 PM | | I go abroad a lot and use a Nationwide Debit Card, with a couple of backup cards from other banks just in case their system is down or whatever. Never had a problem where I couldn't get cash from an ATM. | |
