| Oxymoron Posted: 5/13/2008 4:50:10 PM | I was just pondering the thoughts of some rather catchy phrases that seem not to live up to their pazzazy and misleading agendas....
" The Patriot Act" what would our founding fathers think about coining the term patriot to restrict constitutional rights ????
" Workers Compensation" very catchy and morally sounding policy, however it does not truly compensate workers. It allows employer the freedom to operate without any pending litigation if an employee is injured at work.
" Right to Work" The Taft-Hartley amendment that allows states to help employers offer less wages and benefit's to employees...
Your thought please | |

The Patriot Act, Workers Compensation, Right to Work I think you're confusing oxymoron with misnomer.

| Oxymoron Posted: 5/14/2008 10:42:20 AM | An oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms. For instance: "deafening silence" or "jumbo shrimp" or "government organization" As Phoenix pointed out, yours are misnomers. A misnomer is a term which suggests an interpretation that is known to be untrue. And don't get me started on what people call "ironic"... | |

how about "logical liberal."

| Oxymoron Posted: 5/14/2008 3:08:31 PM |
how about "logical liberal." Not an oxymoron, although "honest conservative" might be, and "compassionate conservative" definitely is. "Patriot Act" might be considered an oxymoron considering that no patriot could possibly support it, but is most likely just a misnomer. In general, legislation is given names like those cited in the OP to conceal their real intent. It's an old game, and nothing surprising about it. In general, the more vague the title (and "Patriot Act" is about as vague and uninformative as you can get) the more harmful the legislation; when the title itself is propaganda, they're always up to something unethical.

| Oxymoron Posted: 5/14/2008 3:39:31 PM | "Free thinking liberal" -- not an oxymoron -- just a lot of regualar morons --- who believe everything they are spoon-fed by the devious liberal media, network news, airhead america, etc.
"Progressive liberal" --- more like DI-gressive -- back to the days of the Bolshevic Republic, Castro's take over of Cuba, Hugo Chavez -- oh, but it couldn't happen here -- "the government will save us from oursleves!"
hahahahahahaha!

| Oxymoron Posted: 5/14/2008 6:50:52 PM | God help our country--too many people are being duped and fooled by the baloney that the right wing spews--brainwashing people to equate being a liberal with Communism
Logical conservative is definitely an oxymoron as is a knowledgeable conservative. I read recently that 80% of people with graduate degrees are DEMOCRATS.
It is very sad to see our country losing its way with too many sheeple being brainwashed, duped and fooled. Too many gullible people caused us to end up with the Idiot in Chief. Sad, sad, sad.

"Revisionist History."
History doesnt' revise itself -- people do!
But too people don't want to learn from the mistakes (of others) the past ---
(Or learn much of ANYTHING -- for that matter!
The outcome ALWAYS equals == History DOES repeat itself!
So many of us need to learn the laws of cause and effect -- instead of just mindlessly bashing others.

| Oxymoron Posted: 5/15/2008 1:55:46 PM | An acronym is a word like NATO, radar, or laser, which are formed from the 1st letter of each of the successive word or from the major parts of a compounded term. It's also an abbreviation.

If you want to get technical, the Patriot Act is neither a misnomer or an oxymoron. It's an acronym. Point in fact, whilst the components are not a misnomer, the acronym formed, by the abbreviation, is.
The OP was referring to the acronym and not the components of the name when he suggested it was an oxymoron. In actual fact the acronym is a misnomer because, as DietCokeGuy ably explained, it suggests an interpretation that is known to be untrue.

I read somewhere that 100% of real conservatives have phd's and no democrat has ever finished government high school. And you have the nerve to accuse liberals of believing everything that they hear or read? WOW. Not that's oxymoronic.
An oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms. For instance: "deafening silence" or "jumbo shrimp" or "government organization"
Actually, an oxymoron doesn't specifically have to be a figure of speech that contains two contradictory terms. It can also be something like an idea or concept that contains contradicting or incongruous elements.
I do, however, have to fully agree with you on the matter of people use of the word "ironic". Most of the time that I hear it used, it's simply a matter of coincidence, which is not irony.
