Ya same goes for paypal they have no protection for the user. Its a popular complaint if you do a google search about it.

What kind of things were you looking to buy? Dont forget, craigslist.org, kijjiji.?...
amazon is crap too I was given a gift card as a gift and the pin didnt work. Tried to get customer service to resolve it but kept getting automated emails giving me their faq's.

How did you find out it's stolen? Did you actually receive the thing and then the cops traced you? I've bought lots of things on ebay, and while some of it has been misrepresented, I haven't been out and out scammed. As for paypal, I refuse to use it. Most of the credit card companies now issue a temporary number for use on the 'net. It's safer and easier to get your money back if it turns out to be some kind of a con.

They sent you a stolen laptop and you're out 400 bucks.

Did you or didn't you get the laptop? I'm not following this.

Never had MUCH issue with ebay. Slowness and a few times my items never arrived, but Paypal always returned my money...

If it's sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I've never had a problem with ebay or PayPal, but I've purchased less than 50 items on ebay.

You have to watch out for the real "phishing" scams, though. If you ever receive an email that appears to be from ebay or PayPal asking for personal information, DO NOT RESPOND! Forward the email to ebay or PayPal at: spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com.

Refurbished laptops is big business. You see them all over craigslist, small computer stores and the buy and sell. Some are just guys who like tinkering with computers and are open about it, then you have your decievers :D who tell you its almost new or new.

You didn't say how you knew it was stolen? Also, what actions did you take with eBay and what was their response? I haven't had any problems with eBay so far (*knock on wood*), but I check my sellers carefully. I also buy and sell with PayPal only. How did you pay for it?

From eBay US: "If members see an item on eBay that they believe is stolen, the best course is to contact law enforcement immediately. Under eBay's privacy rules, eBay’s attorneys will provide important records about pending and past listings with an official request from law enforcement officials. eBay will ask that members inform the police officer handling the case that eBay will be pleased to cooperate in the investigation, and ask the officer to contact eBay using eBay’s law enforcement-specific webform. The officer should include all relevant information, including the case number and any item numbers or User IDs."

I don't know what the Canadian policy is, but I imagine it is something similar?

Got an e-mail form paypal telling me I had "won" a laptop and the price was XXX dollars and it would be taken form my account...meanwhile I hadn't even bid. I contacted paypal, told them, and dang...it was tried again. 3 times in all, but my paypal account was not touched. They really made sure it wasn't.
A stolen laptop....not enough info to go on there.
The only problem I ever had on e-bay was with sellers....listing something in Canadian dollars, then telling you it was supposed to be US dollars and shipping was higher, etc, etc. Many sellers make their money from the shipping, not the sales.
So watch the shipping charges carefully...if they bring the price of the object up to the price you'd normally pay, where is the deal?

Sorry that happened to you - that sucks!

I hope that person who stole it gets their comeuppance

I shop at ebay a lot - mostly for jewelry or clothes - nothing too expensive. Luckily I haven't run into anything like that

Op - sorry you got scammed by the crappy (thief!) individual.

I have used both E-Bay and PayPal a Lot -- as I do a lot of on-line shopping. I have always checked my sellsers out -- gotta have an Excellant and LONG reputation or I won't buy.

I also have only bought small stuff like water filters, make-up, and so forth. Of course I knew the $50 brand new "Genuine" Versace sun glasses were fakes -- but they sure look convincing! And they are $50 quality shades.

I have gotten ripped off a couple of times on small items -- a food chopper that was broken, and one item that was not as pictured.

yna6 -- Maybe you were the intended victim of a "spoof" e-mail. Maybe E-Bay is really not the one who is contacting you --- Maybe its a con-artist who has stolen their logo? At any rate --- I am glad you were too smart for them

all others --- BEWARE of PayPal and Bank of America spoofers(fakes!) -- who e-mail you to to ask for your passwords! I got one last week from from WaMu -- who wanted my info re: my account. -- I don't even have an accaount with them! So maybe they were Phishing spoofers!

everyone on EBAY has a feedback rating -with comments (whether seller or buyer) if you look at their feedback, before you bid or sell something -it should be very clear whether they are a reputable seller/buyer or a scammer.

"If you've listed or bid on an item recently, eBay imposes a waiting period of up to 180 days before closing your account. The waiting period helps ensure that any transactions are complete. During the waiting period, you won't be able to bid, make purchases, list items, or change your contact information - but you'll still have access to your account information."

this info was right there at the first part or page explaining how to close your account.

Well it has been some time, but it might be better to keep your account open during investigation. You did report it to Ebay? They will work with law enforcement to catch the guy. If you paid via Paypal or a credit card notify them too. Ebay also has the technology to identify this scammer and block him from joining Ebay under another ID.

I have never had any problem with eBay , and I buy from there quite a bit. However paypal is another story. They went into my bank account even though they knew they were not supposed to and made such a horrible mess that I actually had to change banks. I specifically told paypal that my bank account was strictly for putting money into my paypal account and that they were to only charge my credit card for purchases.

Now I go through google checkout , but most ebay sellers have never heard of it and wont even look at it so it really limits who I can buy from. Paypal is not as safe ,secure ,friendly or reliable as they would like to make themselves out to seem.

I thought it was REALLY funny, Drunk, when someone started naming craigslist and kijiji (sp). Since the last is a CL spinoff owned by E-bay and e-bay also has a large holding in craigslist. And yup....e-bay owns PayPal also.

OP- Ya know...could have been that the laptop itself was not stolen, but the software on it was.

That is something I didn't know actually. Anyway what exactly would you like me to say ? I have never had any problems with anything I have bought off of any of the sellers on ebay. I have never had anything not arrive or a product not be as it was advertised.

"eBay imposes a waiting period of up to 180 days before closing your account"

its closed now!..i called the paypal number and was going through the motions ...a run around as to why ,what and whatever..then i told them i was recording the conversation and was goingto post it on you-tube..it was closed within a few minutes

as for all of you who had good experiences...i got some great deals..but all the junk i got after a while soon wiped out any good deals..and the last experience was the last straw..i shop close to home now...and just FYI their "protected purchases" policy is BS also...i lost over$400 on that laptop and all i got was lip service in the form of a email...

i sent them all the stuff from the cops da da da..never heard nothing after 2.5 months

so there is my last word on ebay.......

You did the right thing as far as the computer being turned over to the police. However, Ebay being as dangerous as it is. Is still the safest of all the newer sites. I know people who have been taken by Bidz.com and others. PayPal is a long draw out process that makes you feel helpless. I know I've dealt with them before. Someone mentioned Craigslist. Be careful with them as well. Alot of scammers. I responded to an add for a Dell XPS laptop. The moron sends me an email telling me he had to go away suddenly on business and to send him the money to England where he currently was and that he would like to use a company that deals with international commerce. The comany even had a nice website. After a little research I found this was a complete scam. Had I sent the money I would have never heard from this so called seller. Sometimes if the difference is only a few dollars. Go the local store and pick up the item. It saves on the headaches.
