| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/14/2008 3:09:35 AM | I have not really had too much of an oppotunity to get my head around the budget in its entirity as number crunching has never been my thing.
I an curious as to what everyone thought about the Fedral budget and its impact on house holds today?
The "Business Spectator " said in part ........ this budget is a remarkable achievement. The Government’s net financial worth goes from -$25.8 billion to -$3.6 billion in one year, with the unfunded superannuation liability of $112 billion now almost entirely offset by investments.....
While I cant pretend to understand the logistical requirements to run a country. I feel for the aged pensioners. On the news tonight it pointed out that these gems of our society have been left with 269.00 per week to survive on. They have recieved no extra benefits - this is my understanding. I also agree with the man they interviewed asking KRudd to live off this amount.

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/14/2008 3:15:55 AM | The budget is always complex to work out and sometimes the ramifications are not seen for ages.
It looks like everyone gets a small tax cut; thankfully needed; the medicare levy surcharge moving from $50,000 to $100,000 per year will be awesome as I benefit out of that.
the people earning over $150,000 appear to be the losers.
But really the budget doesn't offer anyone any winners that I have read

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/14/2008 3:23:51 AM | My mum is a recent aged pensioner, after working 42 years and paying taxes she gets $90 a week from Centrelink. Yippee What a load of crap She is of the generation aswell who really got in too late for the superannuation to really be a large amount. It sucks massively | |

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/14/2008 3:51:29 AM | It was just not Aged Pensioners that missed out...so did Disabled Pensioners. I sat listening to people whinging on the radio today because they earned over $150,000 a year and they were losing some Government handouts.
I honestly wonder how these would survive if they had to live on the less than $15,000 that most Aged and Disabled Pensioners have to survive on. What is even more of a joke is that while Aged Pensioners along with Disabled Pensioners with Carers get a cash bonus of $500 each year....if you're an independent living Disabled Pensioner you get nothing extra at all.
The most disappointing aspect of it all is that Pensioners had great hopes that Mr Rudd and his Labor Government would finally right some of the wrongs that were inflicted by the previous Howard Government. Mr Swan and Mr Rudd even said in the months previous to the Budget when the plight of Pensioners was being highlighted that these people should have faith in them...so people did and look what happened NOTHING.
To rub even more salt into the wound, Mr Rudd had the absolute gall to say on Macquarie Radio Network today "No-one has to convince me that pensioners are struggling," You have to ask the question...Can this guy and this Government be that dumb...you know it's a problem but you do nothing. I guess when your earning over $300,000 a year and have almost all your expenses paid for you....why worry if Pensioners can afford food or accommodation.

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/14/2008 4:10:06 AM | hmmm cannot comment fully on the budget as i do not have an accountants degree, and for the people that thinkk they will win its the same old same old they give ya 50 bucks but take it back elsewhere...
all this budget proves as most do is that the party that can market the best and tell the best pile of bs gets voted in....
we always blame the politicians but we are really at fault as they know that australia has the most apathetic voters anywhere and we never stand up for our rights...to me that is the biggest issue.....we all whinge aftwrads but we really do not force the issue before an election nor do we stand up when the they do anything, we are the awww we dont like it but we wont get involved kind...This country has sucked for years in regards to government as we have allowed it to get to this level...Prime example is the qld govt...every week we see another pollie or beaurocrat that has broken the rules and gets off with no penalty yet in the private sector if we pulled half the stuff they did we would be meeting bubba in a private cell...yet we do what we always do we grumble but we never stand up to be counted. and Baron i can feel for your position as i have a stepdaughter who is blind and have seen the discrimination and and callous treatment that has been handed out by both the government and the supposed departments that are supposed to be there for the disabled, and yes it sucks royally....
For anyone else that wishes to think about the priorities of our budget, consider this They have set aside $32 million to market the sport of soccer yet cannot find the money for the disabled, the pensioners, the homeless, The health system, and generally anyone else that is in true need of some form of welfare....and that is only one example....Politics is an industry that self serves when in the old days it was the country they served...at the end of the day they will do what ever and tell us whatever to get voted in....
ok down off the soapbox now as i could go on for hours about false expenditure when the real issues are ignored by our pollies.
cheerz all be safe and be well

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/14/2008 5:16:19 AM | Inflation is a big problem, and the issues with pensioners and low-income earners are a part of that. One side of the problem is that some sectors in the Australian economy are booming (such as the mining sector) and generating a lot of income for both the people who work in these fields, and for the government. This is driving a lot of consumer spending and demand for goods and services from the richer members of the economy. This demand has outstripped supply in some areas, such as housing, so things like house costs and rents have risen far faster than CPI, and put a lot of pressure on the poor. We also have very low unemployment and high economic growth rate, so this helps fuel inflation. Also in the global economy, the rise of India and China has led to many of the world's key commodities, including oil and food, to become more scarce, and a lot more expensive. This side of inflation has hit Australia pretty hard, and the government can't do much about it.
It is tough news but government and individual spending has to be reduced, so inflation comes back under control. I think the government should have made more cuts to upper and upper-middle class welfare, while making more provision to help those being hit the hardest by inflationary pressures.

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/14/2008 6:14:33 PM | Yes, those that created the new budget do think elderly people on $38.43 a day have not enough say to threaten them.
They also culled the "Commercially Ready" R&D program which was the most effective, practical and least costly program for the federal treasury.
So now inventors will take their good ideas overseas again to get funding - and while they are there might start manufacturing as well.
Welcome back to the stone age - thanks Kevin.

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/15/2008 7:38:14 AM | and the reforms to the award wage system and abolishing work place agreements in terms of hourly rates etc.
i agree with mona, we let the government get to the point that is has because of us, perfect example is smokers, one way the government felt they could handle the issue was to hike the tax so high that they figured (they pretended) that it would discourage smokers, and sure the stats went down a little. at the time the tax rates came in 30 percent of the population smoked, thats a healthy voting percentage that did nothing.
same now with alcohol and the tax increases that will slowly build and go across the board on all grog. again healthy percentage of voters but ppl will do nothing to stop it.
we whinge and comment but we dont do marches, we dont do letters to the government we dont really do anything...
the party change needed to happen just for some fresh ideas and changes and i really didn't like howards changes to award wages / work place agreements

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/17/2008 7:39:13 AM | I'm sick of hearing about the people on the old age pension complaining about the money they get. The pension is half my take home pay, I'm paying off a house, and a car. I have to have a car for work and drive to work every day and pay for fuel. I have to pay full price for rego, medicine, gas, electricity... They also get a $500 bonus every year, I've never had a bonus at work, apart from a carton of beer for xmas if I'm lucky. When I get to retirment age I will have paid off the house and have saved money to live on. These oldies had the chance to buy houses for a few thousand dollars but didn't and now get rent assistance on top of the pension. I won't get any of that when I get to that age. Two old people sharing a house would have the same income as me, but none of the pensioiners seem to want to share with others. I had to do it as a young bloke when I was poor and until I saved a house deposit. 3 pensioners sharing a house would be living pretty well, but they all want their own place, which is fair enough, but they want the tax payer to pay for it because they didn't save anything while they were working. | |

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/18/2008 4:14:39 AM | angelromia,,,what can I say without appearing to be personal...hmmm...Ok first difference between you and a pensioner is that most do not have the ability to work anymore or the option of choice like you still do...In an ideal world everyone would be able to save enough money to live on for retirement but unfortunately not everyone gets the chances through life to be able to do that..some people are successful and others live from hand to mouth nearly all their life so when they are not able to work anymore they need a pension....Also in todays society there is many different pensions for all types of people not just the olkder generation...christ there is even a benefit for children who cant be bothered living by their parents rules so they can get a benefit if they run away from home...and finally...a lot of people go on and say well in other countries there is not a pension so why should our taxes go to pensions....well consider this most of those people are also not the type that will take their parents and grandparents into their own homes and feed and clothe them when they are old like it is done in a lot of societys overseas...I dont have an issue with the aged pension as most of these people paid their own taxes in the first place so why shouldnt some of it come back......Its funny the people that seem to have a problem with pensioners who have worked all their lives yet dont give a toss about the millions of dollars that is wasted every month by our politicians and beaurocrats on themselves and crap...
cheerz all be safe and be well

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/19/2008 11:51:21 PM | angelfromla.....How nice it is to hear that you have your life in order and that NOTHING will change during the course of your life over the next 40 years. Have you forgotten that some of these aged pensioners were the ones that were sent to war to support this country? Have you forgotten about the Recession? Do you even know what the Recession was? What about your health are you some super hero who is immune to the many diseases that can be thrown at a person? Enjoy your house and your car cause you never know what's around the corner. One of my clients takes 26 pills for breakfast to help keep him alive (He's 91 AND owns his own house), yet he is struggling with the cost of his medication. Not ALL medication costs pensioners $5.60 per prescription as some are not on prescription. | |

| The Aged Pension Missed out? Posted: 5/20/2008 1:45:52 AM | | I think KRudd will do a flip of sorts as he has started a murmur campaign saying they are reviewing the tax system so I am guessing the more pressure on them the more I guess they will use there get out of jail card. Will be interesting to watch how the bandaid or backflip will get tweeked and get played out. | |
