I never realised until i heard it on the news today that China had a Law that you can only have "one child per family". Do you think this law could be used in our country? or do you think it is bang out of order?

There was a thread on here like this yesterday. I can't see it now though.

I think it's a terrible idea. If I can find the thread I'll post the link to it.

Found it... http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts9952167.aspx

The country has a population of 1 billion people. for a country that is trying to develop itself, having such a large burden of population is hard. It's best for the sake of the whole country to have such a policy, and probably the world as a whole! Regardless of all that right and wrong crap, people always fail to see the bigger picture.

As I understand it, it's not so much a law as a HUGE tax for additional children. Of course if you know anyone who has adopted, they can tell you that one of the largest adoption markets is Chinese girls. Because boys are valued so much more in their culture, girls are turned over to orphanages (or killed, or left to die) in the hopes of having a boy. I have a friend who adopted a little girl from China. She is precious and an absolute doll. It cost them a fortune though (in bribes mostly).

Its an appaulling idea. Infantcide among baby girls is common because of their views on boys being more 'worthy'.

I think there should be more earnest investment into maximising the resources we do have and using other resources rather than trying to restrict the human population.
One 'good' virus will do that at some point anyway.

Ahhh! so that's what you're working on in your secret laboratory.

I think the human population needs restricting.
more humans = more agriculture = more natural habitats for other species being destroyed = extinction of other species = broken food cycle = environmental "balance" unbalanced.
more humans = more energy usage = more CO2 = more damage to the environment.
more humans = more waste products = more pollution = more damage to the environment and other species natural habitats being damged/destroyed.
more humans = faster use of non-renewable resources = bigger divide between rich and poor = more poverty = more starvation = more suffering.

I wish I was that clever! Nature is far cleverer than I am, and other virologists too!
HINI was estimated to kill somewhere between 20 and 100 million people over a 2 year period. Thats pretty radical for something so tiny!

We already have that! We need to look at other ways of reducing the damage we have done and of alternatives. And we need to look at alternatives....and mean it! Not just go ;oh yeah thats a good idea' and not doing anything about it.

If it needs controlling... perhaps we should shuffle people off their mortal coil when they get to 70. That way they can work for 65 years, be producrers and consumers...have 5 years peace as a reward then die to stop the strain on the welfare system, the NHS and the resources.

ifeel that i shouldnt post on this given that i have 4 children.

well, nothing much stops me...

nature has its own way of population control in some respects.

in this country we are by and large not major contributor to expanding population, but other countries are, why? because of their culture, call for that to be addressed and your some form of racist..

and how on earth did the op manage to get to his age without knowing china's policy??

we've been doing that for over 50 years (and it was discussed over 100 years ago). Alternatives we have plenty of, co-operation we are in short supply of.

In africa HIV and the aids epidemic are taking care of over population.

The plague wiped out nearly half the population of Europe at the end of the middles ages, and the flu nearly a quarter at the beginning of the last century.

Mother nature knows when there are too many of us and sorts it out in her own way.

What's needed is a little bit more respect for the resources we have. In America there are always a certain number living well under the poverty line in 3rd world conditions such as tent cities, while the privileged few such as movie stars, CEO's etc consume far more than their fair share of resources.

With hydrophonics, modern technology and transportation there is really no excuse for anyone to be hungray barring political will. The EU food mountains could keep many mouths fed, rather than the crazy amounts of waste we currently see. Of that food which does reach our kitchens on average a third of all food in the UK is thrown out uneaten.

There are social problems emerging in China as a result of the one child rule.

1. When most children raised are boys and grow to manhood leads to social unrest as there are not enough wives to go round. Kidnapping of poor rural women and even overseas women is a fast growing crime to feed the demand for wives.

2. Increasing levels of authoritarianism are required to keep the excess testosterone in check, too many young men leads to rising crime. Girls usually soften the effects of adolescent angst a bit in most cultures. It's leading to an unbalanced society.

3. The elderly - when one adult has to support 4 grandparents they feel the strain.

4. Infanticide and 9 month terminations are abhorrent to our own culture.

5. A generation of "little emperors" has emerged - when the hopes and dream of 4 grandparents are all enshrined in one little bubba that bubba gets spolit rotten and grows up a selfish, narcisstic wee beasty. China is actually a very competive society and parents and grandparents put all their hopes and dreams into the only child. This phenonmen is well documented.

20-100 million world wide. No one is exactly sure.

HIV in Africa is the least of our worries, IMO. we only need one 'Patient Zero' carrying one of the multitude of life-threatening pathogens over out in Africa and bingo, population is controlled.

You heard it here first.. lol

I've had these discussions about the risks of pandemics (is that how you spell it?) and the british response to a major outbreak is apparently "close your doors and windows and hope for the best" but that's off topic.

I find it a little naive of people to think "nature" will take care of things. "nature" isn't doing a good job of taking care of things at the moment. It sounds more like a way of burying your head in the sand.

It's not just this thread I've read these sort of comments all over this forum and people seem to think that the damage we are doing will either wipe us out and the earth will survive or "nature" will take care of it (or just denial that we are actually doing any damage).

I don't think we can wait or hope for "nature" "god" or "them in charge" to do anything worthwhile. we all need to do something and take responsibility for what we are contributing to the damage. If you don't know what you can do then "google" it and find out or go to your library and find out where you can get info. But DON'T leave it for somebody else to do - there is NOBODY else who will improve things except us.

The mother nature comment is a pretty good comment in respect to the amount of people on this earth.. We are like parasites eating up and destroying everything in our path. That said, mother earth is doing a better job than the idea of a one baby rule.

On topic. The one baby thang would not work. Okay we are not China, so the throwing babies in rivers etc will probably not happen. The only way i would see it helping is if the benefit system was not so rewarding to families that are so large.

Will also cut a lot of lazy slobs getting their end away to raise more chavvy wasters in the world, just so they can have an easy life.

I beleive its down to each country to choose the rules for themselves. China has been overpopulated for some time now they are a poor nation and they cant afford to be bringing up lots of kids. As for the uk i think all mothers should be able to choose how many kids they have. If you look at the different minorities that have 10 kids per family why couldnt the english do the same. Bringing a child into the world is priceless and i want another 5 kids once ive found the right man that can afford to give me this.

I believe this may be the case in the major cities but in all the rural areas where farming hasnt reached the 21st century families are generally having more than one child..again there is still a problem if the children are girls... !

This information may be outdated now but was definately the case back in '99

One of the sad things about the one child policy in China can be seen in the recent earthquake. Some schools were flattened and a lot of families have now lost the one child they were allowed to have.

(Should I feel embarrassed about admitting to reading anything published by the Daily Mail?)

I don't really see how this would work in developed nations, first I don't think it would be necessary as many developed nations have low birth rates anyway but also many women have other things to do besides have kids. Also, I don't think people would stand for their human rights being trampled on to that degree, where the state is allowed that much control over fertility.

Using that specific criteria, no.

But fiddle around with it a bit - e.g.; "you're too young to have kids","you're too poor to have kids", "you're too stupid to have kids", and then fuck yeah!

yes you should... shame on you!

I think mother nature is just warming up for the BIG ONE. To fix all the issues in one go.

Then it's survival of the fittest....

It's not a law, more of a rule.

Do you think this law could be used in our country?

There's a thing called 'current affairs' I'd read about it if I were you. why would we want to use this law in our country when we have the opposite problem, not enough children being born to support a growing tax burden of OAPs living longer and costing more in pensions and NHS costs. Having less children would just exacerbate the problem.

or do you think it is bang out of order?

Why is it any more out of order than any other law?

Law is simply a response to a societal problem. If people are killed through speeding, we impose laws to say you cannot go so fast. If the welfare of the population is endangered by overpopulation, one option is to pass a law to slow growth. Law after all is nothing more than a societal consensus of right and wrong. Seen from the point of view of now when there's no need to stop people having children, it looks wrong to us.
If you lived in a society which was too overcrowded, you'd be more likely to wlecome it.

And just like speed limits, people would think it's a fabulous idea, so long as it didn't apply to them personally.

If anything, in the UK, we DONT have enough children being born... What with women becoming more succesful in their careers and putting having families off til later & later, there is no longer enough young people to work and pay taxes in order to support the ageing population.. I did read this and was taught it in Sociology but cant remember when and who said it lol

There are now many many more older age people needing health and social care and in about 10 years time they predicted a £6billion deficit, in providing care for the elderly as people are living longer and longer, back in the fifties average life expectancy was 60-odd nowadays its like late seventies, early eighties.... The state pension pot is running dry as the government (when they established it back in the forties or whenever it was) didnt anticipate people living as long thus needing financial support for longer!

So what we all need to do now is go forth and reproduce!!! But we need to ensure our offspring will be hard working, tax paying individuals to support all the old folk! Bless 'em... :)

EDIT// Previous poster got there before me!! great minds think alike eh?? lol
