What does a vagina doctor have.........oh wait, sorry, you said genealogy not gynecology.

I have never looked into it because I'm frightened by the gene pool surrounding me! Don't get me wrong, I love my family and think my immediate family is relatively normal (pardon the pun), but most of my family beyond that are a little off. I shudder to think what I would find beyond what I know now. Ignorance is bliss.

That being said, apparently I was a part of French Royalty in a previous life. How come when someone tells you what you were in a previous life you're never a street urchin or vagabond, you're always an important person? Oh wait, sorry for the hijack.

I do think what you are doing is a cool thing learning about your own family history. Probably cooler that you are using it to contact living family rather than just learning about those that are long past. Kudos to you.

I am tracking my ancestors. Got info from both sides and getting some stories of when they settled in Canada. ancestry.ca is easy to use to build the so called tree. Glad I started this now as people are getting older and I so want to have all the facts I can.

So far one side I have 13 generations..still working on some dates.
Other side 6 generations.

Family from France to Quebec, England to Quebec...so very interesting. I suggest to all to get some info while you can!

I have been researching for a years now and have a blast doing it. Reading census records does get boring at times, but what you find out about your family is interesting.

I have a few famous people in there as distant cousins.

I am an avid genealogist, thinking of turning pro maybe. No one famous in my lines that I know of, well maybe that's not quite so true, but I don't care about their fame. If it isn't mine, it's of no real value to me.
What I have found that is of real value is knowing where my strengths come from. I found sturdy and strong women and men in my ancestry who settled the west, left places when conditions were intolerable , continued on during times of terrible economic upheaval, kept on when they lost babies, or were widowed. If they could withstand all they went through, so can I.
I can feel a book developing as I research one of the lines.

If you want to know anything, ask the Mormon's, they seriously have the background on every living person in North America. My grandfather did some research while he was living in Colorado, as he was doing mission work there for his church and he came across a boat load of information on his side of the family which is my mother's, where as we hit a snag in tracing my dad's geneology. We lost our history because of a name change in the family on my dad's side back in Europe during the 1800's, my mom's family is traced far more exstenively, back to the 1500's and the days of the Duke's in England.

GP 45--Thanks for the plug for the Family History Centers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) . We're good, but not quite as good as you've said. LOL We don't know about everyone who lived in the US. Wow!! Wouldn't that be great. But we do have an enormous amount of records that grow daily and are from all over the world. In the Family History Library in Salt Lake are thousands upon thousands of films whch can be rented and used at local Family History centers. They include censuses, parish registers (fabulous source), microfilmed books, tax records (old old stuff) voter registers from long ago, slave records, wills, land ownership records, and more-- just an awful lot of stuff.
Go to this website, and try a search by the family name, but if you know where your ancestors were, do a search by location/place and see what kind of films are available for you to rent. On the website, you can also locate a center in your area, and go in for some help. It's www.familysearch.org. Please realise that this an all volunteer effort so each place has different schedules and different levels of equipment and expertise of the staff. But help is available at the centers.
It takes time and patience to find them, that's for sure. In the US, records are so horrible in the early 1800's, mostly because of the constant westward expansion, that many of us wallow around in those years for a long, long time 'til a breakthrough comes.
One of the great benefits is finding the living cousins. That is so fun.
Have fun every body.

my family tree is pretty cool (I think)
when the first settlers came to Canada, they were accompanied by soldiers, when the tour was up for the soldier, they had to go back to France, or desert and stay in Canada. since desertion is illegal, the soldiers had to change their name, or else they were deserters and criminals and wanted men. so a list of new names that didnt exist in France already was created, and deserting soldiers could pick a new name from that list, to start a new life. my name was on that list, so it's one of the very first Canadian names.

I havent been able to trace it back further into France though...

anyway, good luck to you

Well, not everyone has religious backgrounds either so it might be harder to trace, or if you have ancestors who are from various countries in Europe who might either be of different religious groups, your history is going to get twisted and harder to trace. My family history is pretty linear so it's easy to trace far back, apparently there is some Scottish in me as well, although the bulk of my family history is from England. Almost everyone in my family has been a part of the Christian faith, all children were baptised at specific churches and their records are all traceable even if you are Mormon. My grandfather did a lot of calling and computer based applications to trace our genetics and he is the only Mormon in our family.

I had an aunt that researched our family lineage on my mother's side... right back to the first 14 Acadian settlers on Cape Breton Island complete with a land grant signed by the King of France...

It is quite a hobby of mine at times.I have my mothers family traced in Holland going back to 1600's.Very interesting to find that 1 child created a dozen & they started all over again, almost lost me...They were farmers & bobbin weavers.
My grandfather on my fathers side had a uncle whos boot got caught in a train track & yeah.. you guessed it,the big ouch, died. My grandfathers side is Belgium I found monks & nuns.He was a cook in the army.
Among a story of a 2 headed child that my grandfather only told me about.Interesting.

Well, not everyone has religious backgrounds either so it might be harder to trace

It's true that not everyone was religious, but there's an upside to the "religion as politics" issues that were in effect in so many countries (and still are in many). For example in England, religious registration was required up until 1837 when civil registration began. So even if the family wasn't religious, they still had to go through the motions by law. Even if the people were what is called non conformist, ie not Church of England, (COE) the state church, the kids had to be "registered" somewhere and the tax paid--I don't think it was called a tax, but in essence that's what it was. So those records are invaluable.
Never give up. There's more information out there than people can imagine.
Did anyone manage to interview their living relatives? It's so cool when you have storytellers in your family. It makes everything so rich.
I don't have the stories of my Mom's side--they weren't family historians at all, nor story tellers, but oh the stories on my adopted Dad's side and my late husband's family. My husband's lines have got southern bravery, a Senator, a governor before during and after the Civil War, the traditional hiding of the silver by burying it, and keeping Yankees at bay (they don't talk about the ones who stayed in the north and WERE Yankees--their names are never spoken LOL) , hiding out criminals, and lot's of high jinks and pranks. My dad's side has someone who had Abraham Lincoln for his attorney and won. He's in some books about Lincoln, always illustrating how President Lincoln loved plays on words. On my birth Dad's side, the stories are just emerging. They are the early, early California pioneers, settling towns and counties, first double wedding in Stockton in 1851, being at Sutter's Fort when Gold was discovered (minding the store at home, NOT out discovering the gold), one took part in the Bear Flag rebellion. All in all, just strong people forging on with life. Not one famous soul amongst them.
Aisha I don't know too much about Dutch records. Can you tell us some about them? I know some of the religious groups and that there was quite a bit of religious oppression back when, but don't know which church was the official one etc. I'm assuming Catholic was it, based on English history (wasn't the William who won at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 Dutch?) --don't quote me, I could be way off base on that.

I've done quite a bit of this too...both sides. Don't recall how far back I got on my moms side...and on my dads I got as far as when they emigrated to (Scarborough) Canada in 1832. This past summer, messing around on google, I found that we're related to David & Mary Thompson, Scarborough's first European pioneers. They date farther back in Canada, but they're a bit removed. Just thought it was kinda cool having gone to the high school of the same name

I started researching my family tree about seven years ago. I originally started looking because my maternal grandfather's father abandoned his mother when he was six months old, the only time he ever saw him, was once when he was seven and he didn't even know it was his father, and then my great-grandparent's divorce became final when he was 12. I thought that maybe his father had remarried and that my Papa might have some half siblings out there. However I didn't have very much information to go on and was trying to use all the "free" resources I could find, so have never really gotten anywhere with that line. However my mother got mad at me because I was only searching for the man who abandoned our family so I posted looking for my three other grandparents families and I didn't really have to find out much myself as my lines found me. On my paternal grandmother's side it's back to 1500's Scotland and on my paternal grandfather's side back to 1500's France. Now if only I could find my Papa's family (if there is any) before he passes on.

I had some background on my father's side, dating back to the late 1700s. I then tapped into Scotland's People, the Scottish government's website, to find out about my mother's side. Based on the info from those, I started looking stuff up on Ancestry.com . A couple of of my family lines go back to the early 1400s in England. It's quite extraordinary - although we are EXTREMELY mundane, no one famous or, I suspect, even interesting. Having said that, one of my g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g- grandmothers (1569-1615) went by the amusing name Mercy Jelly!

My mother has done a lot of research into our family tree. On my mother's side, we're distantly related to John Robert Gregg (founder of Gregg short-hand). One of my great-great-grandfather's (I think) built the Titanic (with the help of a few thousand other lads! LOL).

I'm checking out the family history of my children on their father's side. They are distantly related to Mary Pickford (Co-founder of United Artists), born Gladys Louise/Louisa Smith through her paternal grandmother. Through her (Sarah Key), I have uncovered all sorts of interesting connections.

I'll delve into friends family history also (with their permission, of course!) and discovered that one of my friends is a United Empire Loyalist!

My mom before she passed away a couple of years ago had traced both sides of our family back into the 1400's. As it turns out I am related to the Queen. The Bowes-Lyon lineage which was the Queen Mum's side of the family. This sounded very impressive until it came out in 1987 that 2 of the Queen's cousins Katherine and Nerissa Bowes Lyon had been thought dead for years, but actually had been living in a Mental Asylum. Some of my friends after meeting me and hearing this, grin and say "Yeah we can see how you could be descended from that side of the family!" LOL Granted when you look at the rest of the Royals you wonder how many of them are completely sane anyway! LOL

Well I'm glad (maybe worried?) to say that I can go back to the 12th century Huns.
My family raped and pillaged most of Europe...but please don't hold that against me

When my Great Grandpa came over on the boats from Europe there was a bit of a mix up.
Coming through Customs they misspelled his name, There is about 24 people left in the world with my last name and no one knows what our real last names are.

Sometimes I feel lonely, I feel I have family somewhere that I do not know about. When and if I get married, I want to get into a nice big one where I have tonnes of them all over the place.

Funny you mentioned the name thing Taste valentine...

When my parents came to Canada (I was not born yet) the Customs official decided to add an extra "N" in the middle of our family name, making it a bit easier to pronounce in the Queens English I suppose?
Anyway...it stuck, and I have a last name with an extra letter than my ancestors who go back to the 12th Century.
