Obama sorry for 'sweetie' comment
Barack Obama, candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination to run for US president, has apologised to a reporter for calling her "sweetie". Reporter Peggy Agar, of the WXYZ television network in Michigan, had shouted a question as Mr Obama toured a Chrysler car plant in Detroit. Mr Obama said: "Hold on one second, sweetie" and did not answer. He later left a message for Ms Agar saying it was a "bad habit" and he "meant no disrespect". Ms Agar told the Detroit News: "I've been called worse." Second gaffe Mr Obama has been in Michigan to bolster his campaign as his battle for the Democratic nomination with rival Hillary Clinton reaches its climax.
I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front Barack Obama's apology During his visit he has secured the endorsement of former US Democratic presidential contender, John Edwards. On his trip to the Chrysler LLC plant, Ms Agar shouted out: "How are you going to help the American auto workers?" Mr Obama said: "Hold on one second, sweetie, we'll do a press [session], thanks." The Illinois senator later left a phone message that was played on the television station. In it he said: "That's a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. "Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next." It was the second time Mr Obama had been caught with the word - he used it referring to a factory worker in Pennsylvania in April. Ms Agar said the apology surprised her but she was more concerned he had not answered her question. "People in Michigan have to make a decision about who they're going to vote for... [Mr Obama] could take a second to say what he's going to do for them." Story from BBC NEWS:

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 8:01:43 AM | did he apologize for saying that he had campaigned in 57 states and still had one to go? that should have killed his political career. look at what happened to dan quayle after he spelled potato wrong, and quayle has more education that obama does! | |

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 8:13:15 AM | I'm sure those working class people have been called a lot worse by Republicans, but perhaps not to their faces.
"Most people don't have the luxury of living to be 80 years old, so it's hard for me to feel sorry for them."
"We have to blow up this train and the rails and the trestle and kill everyone on board." - discussing health care reform
"You haven't thought about a new husband, have you?"
- advice to an elderly widow , while talking about cutting Medicare. Phil Gramm McCain economic adviser, and probable Secretary of the Treasury
And you are calling Obama an elitist based on the word "sweetie".
I'd take my chances with Obama, to be honest.

He apologized, and offered to make it up to her personally.
Unlike the Republicans, who have driven the country into it's present state.
The folks on that line BETTER start caring about Phil Gram, because that's the guy that's advising McCain on economics - and may run the Treasury Department.
Have the Republicans EVER apologized for the state of the US economy, and the effect on those same workers, over the last eight years ?
Have they ever apologized for ANYTHING that they've done ?

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 8:51:20 AM | | Last I looked Republications aren't running congress. You would think that if things are going down hill I would argue that the 110th congress could be held responsible for either causing the economic decline or not doing a damn thing to change it. Wow and I thought Democrates were the answer. | |

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 10:37:34 AM | Is there honestly a whole discussion thread here based on calling a reporter "sweetie"??? Good lord what next. Oh I know....you haven't started one yet about him being left handed! Those people are satanic, you know. | |

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 10:48:11 AM | . Ms Agar shouted out: "How are you going to help the American auto workers?"

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 10:48:57 AM | simmah, the kid who was at the spelling bee with dan quayle during the infamous "potato" incident, was invited to lead the pledge allegiance at the democratic national convention in 92. moral of the story, each party makes mountains out of molehills. | |
|
| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 10:56:27 AM | I'd like to know the answer to that too.
Ms. Agar didn't mind the "sweetie". Why isn't the story being presented in the proper perspective instead of totally shifted to the absurd? The story should be "What is the answer?". This is my gripe completely... the MSM presents the issue in the context of 'Sweetie' for consumption instead of discussing just what the candidates plan to do for Auto Workers!
|
| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 11:02:16 AM | The 'Sweetie' comment was probably just a natural habit of what he says to his wife. ... i.e. 'Yes, dear... whatever hon... just a sec. sweetie, etc.'...
That's the least of his coming problems.
Guess everyone knows the ex SEC big wigs are backing Obama. These are the people who set the rules/regs. on Stock/Commodity Exchanges and they do not NOT want outside controls set on pricing. Voila... gas prices for one prime time example.
McCain does want some regs. set ... but, it is highly doubtful he will succeed on that if the Congress continues and increases in Dem. majority.
I've sat in, via computer conference, on some of these meetings in the past (the very very few they opened to the public and then it was only to those who knew about it and had already presented docs. to place for debate. I got lucky in getting in). Anyway, in the general group (off record) discussion sets... we brought up politics..and I was shocked at the lopsided balance. Most of the ones in the power of setting up the rules/regs. were Dems. Most of the regualar Traders... were Rep. or Indep. It was an eye opener.
Then... a couple of days ago I hear the news that SEC is backing Obama. Only having had the opportunity to be a part of the inside goings on.. for that timeframe... am I able to see the truth. The connection b/w Obama and the SEC... the pricing regs. AND... it all makes sense why his warchest (campaign funding) is sooo much more than Clinton or McCain.
And, yes, it was funny when he was caught off camera... talking about his suit and in his words..'looking presidential'... at a factory plant of blue collar workers. May not meant much at the time.. but, it was all over the news and people are people. They will get offended.

I didn't know this...
Sound like Change to you??
I posted this questioning how He could be so arrogant as to not answer ..... and
give the "looking presidential suit" appearance to the masses..... while CEO's laugh at the comment.....
Does he not need the Blue collar vote????

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 12:09:22 PM | It is called being a gentleman. . . I know times have changed, but those who are brought up with the residucal effects of being raised to be a gentleman, sometimes slip and call a female sweetie. I am only 40, but I sometimes do it as well.
It is an honest and sincere sentiment, that isn't easy to remove from one's lexicon. I never accidently slip and call someone the N word, or any other racial slurs. I don't slip and call someone a sexist or homophobic name. But, "sweetie" does not fall into those categories.
I would consider us luck to have a true gentlman in office for a change, and if that is the best they can throw at us; "Happy days are here again. . ."
As for blaming Congress, one republican stronghold fell yesterday. . . More to come soon!

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 12:15:19 PM | | the problem with this is that if people don't want to make a big deal out of this, then if someone calls obama "boy", then that can't be a big deal. I call my friends my boys all the time. some people might find it offensive, but then again, some people might think that it's degrading to women to be called sweetie. too much PC bull s h i t. I will just continue on my theme of calling everyone d i c kweeds. it doesn't cater to one race or gender. | |

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 12:23:57 PM | Boy, Ive been away from these for a while but coming back to read them, the triteness justs goes lower and lower and lower, doesn't it.

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 3:06:47 PM | Good lord what next ?
You know what I love about American politics ?
A guy starts a war for the wrong reason, at the wrong time, and in the wrong place, and it's pretty much accepted.
He plunges the American economy to a depth where it requires a bathysphere, and it's not really discussed much.
Obama says sweetie to someone ?
The world just ended. | |

| Obama Image? Does he need Help? Sweetie Posted: 5/15/2008 3:21:51 PM | yeah, but I didn't put him there. I think that people are looking past bush a little bit and thinking about the future. obama is under the microscope and he had better get used to it. bush has been attacked by people. it happens to all politicians. you must be spending too much time on fox news if you aren't reading anything negative about bush! | |

I call obama an elitist politician based on the fact that his entire life he has had only the best. expensive private schools, growing up on the beaches of hawaii, and now he is rich. he seems nicer than mccain and clinton, but they are ALL elitists. Here comes the Ignorance Movement again. In the late 70s when Republicans decided to pander to religious people with 'values issues' they knew what they were doing. It worked splendidly and ever since then we keep hearing smart is bad and dumb is good. For our own sakes, every president should be the cream of the crop. We just spent 7 1/2 years learning just how lousy a stupid president can be with the help of his stupid base of support.
