" What if all the world's inside of your head, and we're really all alone?"

I think Trent Reznor puts it best. .

This is all a dream, and none of you are real.

It's all just creations of your(my) own. A silly game, really. Meaningless.

Nothing matters much!

Time to be happy and enjoy things now!

Then you really wouldn't be alone because you'd have the whole world in your head.

Like in the movie The Matrix?
We are in control of much more of our own reality (choices) than the general population wants to embrace. Is the whole thing some dream? That would mean only *I* exist .. you are nothing but here for my personal entertainment .. and if that's the case, then why did that incredibly sexy man I spent far too little time with not do what I apparently decided he would do .. which would be what I fabricated that he'd said he would do? Too weird for me to wrap my acceptance around. A pleasant little interlude of thought-silliness, though. Always entertaining.

Hey, you never know... Really, that could be why we're all here in the first place... A single mind trying to relate... One is truely the loneliest number.

If all the world's inside my head, the rest of you are artifacts of my imagination, and subject to my whim and control...?

I know the world is outside my head because there are plenty of things in plain sight too big to fit through my ear. The theory I prefer is that we exist in the dream of a god who wakes up every once in a while, and when he does, his dream ends and so do we.

And do the people in my dreams know they are only a dream? Am I a dream of someone else? Is that who I call God? Very Eastern.

Best I ever heard this topic expressed was, 'I who say you are dreams am a dream myself'. Then the question becomes, who is dreaming me?

Back when I was studying philosophy in university, a prof who was teaching my Metaphysics and Epistemology class made an interesting comment: "It is the nature of the real that it resists acts of will".

I've always held that to be a bit of a litmus test, particularly when reading some of the posts in the POF forums. It is always somewhat humorous (and sad at the same time) to see how people will convolute their logical processes when confronted by the immobility of the real; and almost always, this is undertaken with a desire to see thought supersede reality in precedence.

So, one more observation from a visiting prof who taught that same class, with reference to the subject of Empiricism: "Think of a color you have never seen before."

Can that be done? Probably not; although, computers have no difficulty in generating colors we have never encountered before. So, what does that mean? Simply, that experience takes precedence over thought: we do not create the world through our thoughts but rather, the world causes us to think.

Seems pretty obvious, on a pre-philosophic level; and really, it seems that only those who practice 'bad philosophy' (and/or 'bad science') can convince themselves otherwise. As the German philosopher Leibniz noted: "Point of view defines the observer." It is of course easy to invert that very true statement and it is just such an inversion that most often lies at the heart of the solipsistic ideas (which define the world in terms of the observer) that are so characteristic of the "new age" movement. But again, reality resists acts of will… and it is just plain mental laziness which seduces people into thinking that their thoughts can or are responsible for reality.

A Dream Within A Dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Yes the Kantian belief was that we cannot know the noumena (objective universe per se). We can only observe through our sensory organs and perceive it within out conciousness. Thus we can only ever know the phenomena of reality and not the noumena. However, since Kant's influence was so great many of us do not know of the philosphies and philosophers which came after sort of part of this field of continental philosophy that say, Hegel brought about that argued that we can perceive the noumena or in his words, the ultimate reality. Although not that we have but that we can.

I think this question relates to the classical 'appearance vs reality' problem in philosophy. Even hard-headed empiricists would acknowledge that the 'real' world as it is in itself, independent of our sense experience, is different than the world we 'see' and experience with all of our senses. Kant's distinction between noumena and phenomena has been questioned by some philosophers, because positing an unknowable reality behind appearance seems to be a questionable bit of metaphysics.

Maybe, as Nietzsche argued, there is only a universe of appearances and change, and there is no unchanging and ultimate reality behind this appearance; the true reality is the phenomena itself and the various patterns in which phenomena manifest themselves according to deterministic natural laws known to science. This also seems to be the view of many scientists as well.

I think where I would agree with Kant is that human cognition of reality is finite, and we don't have access to a God's eye view of things, no matter how hard we try. It is not so much as reality being created by the human mind as the limits of human cognition itself, beyond which we cannot pass. The rationalist dream of uncovering the whole of reality in some all-embracing science or metaphysical scheme I think, is one that can never be achieved.

What if all the world's inside your head...?Soooooo everyone you create is part of something your creating for what purpose? Why would we create painful situations? Why would we create happy ones?...so that we can enjoy the happy ones, and call then the "happy ones"..., so we have an understanding of what happy really is or what painful really is...Why would we create people who float through life and never think about these things? Why we create our own little world just for me...because it suits our purpose of selfishness...is it possible that we are ourselves are the deity, alone in the universe, creating/destroying parts and pieces of what we have already created...doesn't this question really go back to why do we exist...?hmmm...

Why we exist?
That's one to ponder.
Well, we just didn't happen by accident or did we?
Assuming we didn't, then someone or something had to kick start us.
Now, how important are we to this someone who got us going?
Is he interested in the path we take; does he care or even desire to relate?
When we stumble is it a big deal or a little deal or any deal?
Is he there to pick us up and pat us on the rear to get us moving again.
Does it matter that we in fact move, go in the right direction, do something, relate back?
Does he determine what is right and what is wrong? Does he make the rules?
Does he step in when the rules are broken assuming he cares if or not they are broken?
How long does he keep us around?
When he decides enough is enough what then???

The way I feel about the world and my perceptions of it are in my head. There's not enough room in my brain for the rest.

The thing I always found curious was we all have different perceptions and one person's perception of the same event can really blow another person away because they felt so different.

So what if my perception of blue, was really another person's perception of red? Could explain those people who think red and pink look good together.

LBP, you are more than just what is in your head. Case in point, look at your hand. Is it in your head? So, you are physical (we just figured that out with the last exercise), mental (if you weren't you would not be paticipating in the site), emotional and spitiual. The last two are a little harder to handle. Emotional or psychological can go alot of different ways. That is why we have mental hospitals, to deal with the sick. That is also why the book, Women are from Venus and Men are from Mars, made a few bucks for its author. Now spiritual is were it really gets interesting as long as you understand that we are not dealing with religion but with faith. Guess what, faith is part of every human being. The difference is in what one puts his faith in.

Surely it isn't.

The quickest way to cure people who believe this is to punch them repeatedly in the face and tell them to quit hitting themselves.
