| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 3:48:57 PM | Why do guys whistle when they see an attractive woman? I'm not talking about the loud whistle aimed at getting a woman's attention. I'm talking about the low whistling that occurs when a man glimpses an attractive woman. It seems like a reflex action, maybe to let off some steam like a tea kettle?
Educate me. Thanks. | |

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 3:52:52 PM | | Not sure, but I do the same thing when I see a really nice car, motorcycle or even a piece of art. My question to you is how does it make you feel as a woman when a complete stranger whistles at you? | |

When he's just quietly whistling to himself because beautiful me has passed by, I take it as a compliment. It's especially cool to hear that whistling when I don't expect it, like when I'm in the supermarket in my sweats and looking like a mess. Makes me think the cosmetics and fashion magazines don't know that they're talking about.
But why the whistling response to things (human and otherwise) that men find attractive?

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 4:32:18 PM | | To be perfectly honest, for myself as I don't assume to speak for any other men, it's because I find her attractive, and I want her to know, but not in an overly abusive way that everyone else is going to be able to overhear. I'd LIKE to catch her attention, but without causing her embarrasment. As for cars, motorcycles and other things its just a natural response. Most of us did it as boys learning from our older brothers and fathers, who in turn learned it from someone else. | |

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 4:49:32 PM | | I think you have seen to many movies lol. I own my own construction business and have never heard any of my guys whistle at any. Even before I did own my business I worked for a construction company, and never heard it then either. Now either I have led a sheltered life, or you just happen to want to post a look a me thread, but either way, I don't see it as such a problem that you need to post a thread about it. | |

Ya, that one...I like that one...awesome

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 5:14:44 PM | Hey, InAdvance.
Where in my post did I mention construction workers, Mr. Chip on Shoulder?
If you're in the construction business, then you HAVE led a sheltered life. (Bad joke. Sorry.)
Where did I say this is a problem? I'm just curious about why guys do this, so I thought I'd ask the guys. So put down the nail gun and chill.

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 5:33:48 PM | | Where in my reply did I say you did, say anything about construction workers? The movie sets show typically one person, a construction worker on lunch break, as the hot woman goes by, doing the whistle. If you want to pretend that isn't the case thats fine, but sell it to someone who doesn't know. I don't see it on T.V. with any other type, so I respond with what I know. Now if a bunch of wal*mart workers or postal workers, whistle to you as you pass, then hey more power to you, but don't respond with an innocent "I'm curious why guys do this" when my point is that it doesn't happen enough to say so. | |

You know TV and Movies are not the only source of information. I've seen men whistle at women on the streets of the City where I live, and I've even seen it a few time while I was in Cuba a 4 years back. The locals would whistle at the women as we drove by on mopeds for a tour of the countryside. Maybe you need to ignore the false things that TV and Movies have placed in your head and stick with what you know..not what you do not know. Just because you didn't experience it doesn't mean it doesn't happen or doesn't exist.
As to why some men DO whistle at women, they are brining attention to themselves and letting you know they find you attractive. A compliment if you will.

You know TV and Movies are not the only source of information. Really????????? Ya think? If you read my post you would have noticed the bit of me saying to the OP "maybe you watch to many movies"

Are you completely mental?????? My whole reply was on what I do know lol. I know none of my guys, in my presence have done it, nor have I even experienced a man whistle toward a woman. The fact that you live in a city that it happens frequently or that you visit a place like cuba doesn't make it the norm, just desperate.

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 7:44:41 PM | Because way back in the caveman day if we seen a hottie all we had to do was go up to her and drag her into our cave and have our way with her. There was no need for any small talk, or trying to impress or compliment her or be polite.
Now that we are civilized with morals, values and respect.......and laws..... we are limited to simply expelling some air in the form of a high pitched sound called a whistle...... Its very fustrating to say the least........
It was cool being a caveman. Boy....... those were the days.

Now it's just the opposite, just ask Red and her ManBat.

They're much too afraid you won't hear them so they tend to shout. The whistle doesn't bother me so much but the growl I find annoying and the quick horn honk always startles the crap out of me.

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 8:50:15 PM | I whistle sometimes, I don't really think it about it but maybe it's a way of alerting the people around me know that something amazing has captivated my interest, or maybe my subconscious is trying to express itself.
Sometimes I do it on purpose if I think it will make someone feel better, you never know when a little flirtation on your part will make someone's day.

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 8:55:43 PM | | We do it because we all grew up (so to speak) watching OLD Warner Brothers Cartoons. | |

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/15/2008 9:18:28 PM | | Because we can...................well....I can't because I can't whistle but most other guys can. | |

| Why the whistle? Posted: 5/16/2008 12:42:13 AM | Well I cant whistle but when I do see an attractrive guy I try to whistle but most times cant. I think people do the whistling thing though because they find you attractrive and its a way of showing it | |

My question to you is how does it make you feel as a woman when a complete stranger whistles at you?
Uncomfortable.
Guys think we should take it as a compliment. Walking up to me and talking would be a compliment. I've had guys walk up to me in the street and tell me I look good and it brightens my day, the ones that stand over the other side of the street and whistle I find derogatory, as was said earlier, they do the same if they see a car or a bike - it's a form of objectification, I'm not a person to them. Maybe I'm just too British.
