"fortune teller"
You may think they are telling you your "fortune".. In reality they are earning their "fortune" and will tell you what you wish to hear based on what you share with them.

A true "fortune" teller does not charge, does not advertise. The world possesses very few of these who have the right balance to succeed and be accurate without creating to much drama for themselves. Most work for the FBI or other large agencies such as the FBI.

Others keep to themselves in a mountain or wilderness retreat. Every now and then a "real" one will bob up at a Celtic or mystic festival. Normally eyeing off whoever takes their fancy for that weekend/period.

These people prey on insecurities , the judge you by appearances only , how you carry yourself and dress and look puts you into certain groups. Im not dismissing mystics , i believe there is genuine ones out there. runnig late , will add more later

I'm neither for 'em nor agin 'em...Suffice it to say that well honed deductive insight may well appear magically inspired. There will always remain room in my mind for improbables to prove themselves not only possible but actual! . I'd hate to think I'd ever become so close minded as to dismiss something entirely simply because current 'scientific' thinking deemed I should....Though having said that, I just had one of those Godawful IFONLY flashes... maybe if Fortune Tellers were in greater supply, the world would miss out on marvellous quotes like - 'because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know."...and that would make it a far less colourful place!

A forensic profiler for a law enforcement agency is a generally a qualified scientist, some have "mystics" in their department. It would be rather rash I feel to perceive science as dismissing all "mystics".

i've been to a couple, and they have told me the same thing :) I will meet a man and all that happy ever after stuff..........still waiting.........One "psychic" discribed the man i am to meet down to his eye colour. I should have met him already.....like i said..still waiting....oh yes...i was meant to be wealthy by now too.....again still waiting.....

I don't put to much credence into what they say. Once thing though, both women have discribed my kids and past life to a tee, and no i did not given them any information about me at all. My daughter has seen a psychic several times and for her most of the "forcasts" have come to be.

I've been to few well many I am 50:50 yes they are some that really know what they are talking about and some that just blabber....

few years b4 my separation I went to one, actually went for a friend who was separated and was going to be divorced but the lady told her that she will be back with her husband in December of that year and when she did mine, she told me I was going to be divorced...I was so nervous I even told her off but little did I know she was right...............my friend went back, YES December and about a year latter I was separated.

I went and found her again around end of the year, 2 years ago. She told me that I am suppose to be married twice to the same man or 2 different men but the second time is for life and she said this will be determined by around July or August ...that is when my divorce was final..........my ex did a quick divorce since he was told his mum is dying so to keep me out of the money he was receiving he did it...in July.

She also told me I will be very rich and famous internationally Now I am waiting for that bit...if I will then she was correct

But I will be going to another one someone recommended to a friend and will inform you how I went

I used to read my own tarot cards...but stopped cos it was getting too scary! Have been to a couple of card readers....saw Kerry Kulkens once (she used to write for New Idea), and she tol dme I'd been buried alive in a past life - which woul dexplain why I freak if my bed sheets are tucked in, or I have to sleep in a sleeping bag

A girlfriend of mine years ago would read flowers. (She didn't charge us...) She'd get us to go into the garden, pick a flower and put it in a brown paper bag...then she'd feel it and tell us stuff. She told me I would have twins...at that point I hadn't even been with the man who would become my husband for even a month, and I didn't want children. But about four years later I did have twins....that's a pretty good prediction. (Not one you want repeated too often, tho).

Fortune tellers, at least some of them, use a technique called 'cold reading' where you are asked some questions, or some suggestions are put forward, which you respond to. There is a random chance that out of a certain number of questions, suggestions or predictions, some will be right, due to pure chance. Our cognitive bias is that we will read the 'hits' more than the 'misses', and hence the fortune teller is 'right.' To me, things like astrology and other forms of divination don't give you any useful insight into either yourself, your personality, or your future. But I am not against people who indulge in these things at their own expense and find some theraputic value in them.

I have never been to a fortune teller but I would like to but part of me is quite scared and apprehensive of hearing what she/he may tell me. I have heard that they don't ever give you bad news - is that correct?

I have known a few friends that have been to them and overall they have been quite accurate although rather on the vague side.

That's funny GG.

I must admit that whenever I read those Nova magazines and see that there is a psychic/clairvoyant festival coming up, I wonder why they need to advertise it...

Have had a tarrot reading as well as visited a psychic. It was all very broard but also kind of reassuring. One prediction came true - a new car round Christmas.. Now did that happen because it was going to or was my decision altered by the prediction?

The psychic was different with some spirits visiting - skin prickling and brought me to tears......... I've had premonitions that came true so believe to a degree - my car was stolen the day I felt I shouldnt drive to the train station. Gut feeling - always trust that even if no logical :)

The problem is you have fortune tellers, tarot readers, card readers, mediums, trancers (not the rave type hehe), clairvoyeunts/audients/sentients

Charlatans are in every profession but you dont hear people say *do you believe in a car salesman*. If people want to learn more go to your local spiritualist church. You will see how alot of this is all around us and alot of people do it but dont charge. So much to say so much not to say on a forum

I saw a psychic about 5 years ago before I moved to Oz. I was quite convinced at the time that it was all "real" especially when she talking about the spirit of a close relative that she said was in the room - unfortunately though not one single thing that she said would happen has happened so maybe it was just what I wanted to believe or needed to hear at the time.

ok.. back , with some time to spare :P

I went to a psycho.. err i mean psychic many years ago , i was like all of you , dubious about the accuracy of these meduims.

What the lady told me was nohting i didnt already know.. i noticed more about the people around me than what she was saying to me.I believe if you were an unemployed bum , depressed and had enough of the world , but walked into one of these festivals in a suit and tie , carrying yourself well , holding head high etc , and with a fake winning attitude , smile on your face ( not a fake one ), that they would say "your life is going well , i see great fortunes , you will not be short of money ( they will check your hands for a ring ) your marriage is causing you trouble , there is something blah blah blah , but the problem will resolve itself.

Like others have said... true clairvoyants are rare and dont charge , and are surprisingly accurate.. you only need to watch a few of these shows to work out the fakes from the genuines.

I hold no faith in the carny claireys

oh.. btw... i see this thread disappearing into the nether regions of the next page within the span of this year.. hows that for an insight to the future?

Hey Bewitched..

I too met Kerry Kulkens many years ago at that Mind Body and Soul Festival in Melbourne which is held each year...I was just standing near her "shop" and was just browsing at her book.....she came strait over to me and told me to please take a seat...I was a bit taken back but did as she said....she then took my hand and told me about my husband that had just died about 4 months previously and all that happened and what would happen in the future regarding my "love life' ..I did not pay for this btw...she said she felt compelled to tell me this as I had a aura of sadness around me and she felt overwhelmed to tell me this...I was stunned because she even described in detail how my husband died, what he died of and even his name and what country he came from.......she was way too accurate (she was spot on about the future love life as well) ...My G/F who was with me cried thru out the whole thing...I was too dumbstruck to do so..I reall was shocked and quite stunned.

I went into that festival a non believer or was fairly ambivalent but I came out well and truly swayed...I do believe that SOME people do have a gift that cannot be explained....but as for the future...I no longer want to know what it holds, I wonder at all times like Im sure we all do but as we all know to degree, we are Masters of our own fate and destiny, but yes that episode did spin me out....and I do wonder how she knew...

Interesting, Pookie. There is NO way she could have known that had happened to you. All the scoffers...take note. I actually saw her when I went to ride Puffing Billy with my little sister and my kids, Pookie...and I paid for my reading. Her shop was in the gorgeous little town the train leaves from - is it Ferntree Gully? Many people who hear or see or feel more than most do not charge for their talent...but they too have to pay their rent!

I think we need to keep in mind any idiot or conman can set themselves up as a 'psychic'. I would suggest seeing somebody by 'word of mouth' advertising, rather than a glossy flyer, or ad...or even a stall at an expo style set-up.

Dear Bewitched

Yes I was pretty stunned that day and I was quite disturbed...and this was back in early 2002....I believe she does live in The Dandenongs...but I actually heard and it could be wrong that she has passed away..have to google to find out

Im pretty sceptical but that day blew me away...I thought it was all to get money from me and when I offered to pay, she refused...she said she felt she had to say something due to the aura she felt around me....like I said, I dont know, but I know that what she said to me was stuff only I really knew..and even telling me my husbands name and the kind of cancer he had which was rare and was discovered by accident...no way was it a cold reading...

So yep after that I believe..I do believe some do have a gift that cant be analysed...Im just glad she or any like her use it for good...and like you Bewitched, I play around with Tarot quite a bit..did some serious study with the Tarot Guild of Aust a few years ago and I find the Tarot and all associated with it, myths etc fascinating ...Im so good at reading it for others though, but hopeless with myself...I always pull the Tower Card..and Bewitched you know what that card means..lol

Go the Cats tonite against the Pies - I predict a win !!!

Note... I didnt say who !!!...

Saw him at the Burswood Theatre, not a one on one thing.
I did see a clairvoyeunt on the weekend though and she was pretty good.
